Thepresent' invention relates to improvements in supports and has reference more particularly to a device for supporting garment hangers in an automobile. i
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a support for garment hangers thatis adapted to be secured in a rigid position in the rear seat compartment of an automobile for accommodating one or more garment hangers to support garments without causing the latter to become rumpled while traveling, thus obviating thenecessity of having to press the garments when removed from the hangers and supporting device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character that will be secured in place in an operative position by one of the doors of the automobile when the door is closed, and readily removable when not in use, when the door is moved to an open position. A still further object is toprovide a support for garment hangers that will not necessitate any alterations toan automobile in order to secure the device in position for use. and further, the device can be adjusted to accommodate various heights of automobile body interiors.
Another object is to provide a device of the above mentioned, character that can be readily and easilyas'sembledand disassembled and when not in use, can be placed in the luggage compartment of the automobile without occupying much space.

In the drawings, with reference more particularly to Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, wherein the preferred embodiment ,of my invention is disf closed, the-numeral I designates generally the 20' support. The support includes a base plate 2 having a downwardly and inwardly directed spring clip portion 3 extending from its outer end,the purpose of which will be presently described. A tubular socket 4 is arranged to extend 1 upwardly from the base plate 2.
The base plate 2 is adapted to rest on the floor of the rear seat compartment of an automobile,
. with the spring clip portion 3 engaged over the and left hand threads [0 and ll, respectively,
and cooperating therewith is the knurled sleeve I2 whose respective ends are formed with right .and left hand internal threads to receive the respective ends of the oppositely threaded portions of the rod sections. Thus, by rotating the sleeve, the rod sections may be adjusted longitudinally to accommodate the :door frames of different heights.
The lower end of the lower rod section 9 is removably fitted in the socket 4. Secured on the upper end of the upper rod section 8 of the standard is the bracket [3. This bracket is in the nature 'of a strip of metal that is bent around the upper rod section and is fixedly attached thereto by a pin .14 in the manner as clearly shown inFigures2and 4. I
A. spring clip I5 is. eitherintegrally or otherwise fixedly associated with the loop forming portion of the bracket l3. The upper spring clip is formed to engage over the bead portion l5 at the top of the door frame of the automobile and is further-held in place by the adjacent upper portion of the door 1 when the latter is in its closed position. It is, of course, understood that the upper and lower spring clips are shaped to conform to the shape of the upper and lower rails or jambsof the-door frame.
In this manner, the support will be rigidly secured in position in the rear seat compartment of an automobile when the device is in use.
Forming a salient part of the. invention: is thehange arm or bar. The upper edge of this arm is notched at spaced intervals as indicated at 18 to accommodate the hook: portions or conventional garment hangers.

A similar angular piece 21 is associated with one edge of the upper portion of the lower section 24 and the slotted lower end of the upper section- 23 fitsbetween the upper end: of the. lower section 23 and its angular piece 21. The. upper portion of the lower section 23 is formed with an opening 28 and a similar opening is. formed in the angular piece 21 in registry with: the. opening 28 to accommodate the boltv 29 which also extends through the slot 25. A thumb= nut 30 is threaded on the bolt 29.. This construction provides for the bracing. ofi theasections. of; the
standard and also permits the same to be longitudinally adjusted.
The lower end of the lower section 24 is bent to form a floor engaging base portion 3| and a spring clip 32 for engagement over the beaded portion at the bottom of the door frame of the automobile, similar to that in which the spring clip 3 engages over the beaded portion 6, heretofore described.
The upper end of the upper standard section 23 is bent to form the upper Spring clip 33, that is shaped to conform to the beaded portion at the top of the door frame over which it engages in thesame. manner as the spring clip l5 engages over the beaded portion It, also heretofore described.
Whenthese spring clips 32 and 33 are engaged over their respective bead portions, the door, when closed, will coact with the spring clips to hold the strap metal form of support in a rigid position in the rear seat. compartment of the automobile. A bracket 34, formed from a strip of. metal is associated with the upper end portion of the upper standard section 23 and a pin 35 extends transversely through the outer-ends; of the arms of. this bracket.
A sectionalhanger arm or .bar 36 includes an innersection 3.4 the inner end portion of which is formed with a slot 38 and is disposed between the arms of the bracket 34. Thepin 35 extends through the slot 38 and provides: a pivotal and slidable. connection between. the hanger arm or bar and-the bracket 34.
The outer section 39 of this hanger arm or bar; is formed at. its inner end portion: with an angular piece 40 at its lower edge that extends upwardly and parallel: to. the body of the. outer section 39. The. outer'end portion of the inner section. 31. fits. between the. upstanding side wall ofthe angular piece 40 and the adjacent side face of they outer section 39. These sections are adjustably secured. in any extended position by means of the bolt 4| that extends through. the slotted sections and. the. slotted side wall of. the angular piece 40 and a knurled nut42. is threaded on the bolt to hold the sections in any 1ongitudinally adjusted position.
A hook or bill 43 is formed on the inner extremity of the inner section. 31 for cooperation with the lip. 44,, struck out from the upper portion of the upper section. 23 of the standard to secure the hanger arm or bar in its. horizontal operative position, in the. manner as is more clearly illustrated in Figure 8. of the drawings.
By disengaging the. hook 43 from the lip 4.4, the hanger arm or bar can be moved forwardly and then swung downwardly against the standard to an inoperative position.

Having, thus described the, invention, claimis:
1. A support for garment hangers for'use in an automobile having adoor frame, a door, and

means for locking the hanger supporting bar in its operative position.

Asupport for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions and a door; comprising a base adapted to rest on the floor, means on said base for engagement over the lower beaded portion of the door frame, a standard mounted on the base, means on the upper for engagement over the upper beaded portion of the door frame, both of said means being retained in engagement with the respective beaded portions of the door frame by the door when the latter is in a, closed position,

A support for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions, and a door; comprising a base adapted to rest on the floor, a spring clip extending laterally from the fit over the lower beaded portion of the door frame, a vertically adjustable standard mounted on the base, a bracket carried by the upper end of the standard, a spring clip extendinglaterally: from said bracket and shaped to fitover the upperbeaded portion of the door frame, both of said spring clips being retained in engagement with the respective beaded portions of the door frame by the door, when the latter is in a closed position, and a garment hanger supporting member mounted on said bracket.

A support for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions, and a door; comprising a base adapted to rest on the floor, a spring clip extending laterally from the base and shaped to fit over the lower beaded pora vertically adjustable tion of the door frame, standard mounted on the base, a bracket carried by the upper end of the standard, a spring clip extending laterally from said bracket and shaped to fit over the upper beaded portion of the door frame, both of said spring clips being retained in engagement with the respective beaded portions of the door frame by the door, when the latter is in a closed position, and a garment hanger supporting member slidably and pivotally mounted on said bracket.

A support for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions, and a door; comprising a base adapted to rest on the floor, a spring clip extending laterally from the base and shaped to fit over the lower beaded portion of the door frame, a vertically adjustable standard mounted on the base, a bracket carried by the upper end of the standard, a spring clip extending laterally from said bracket and shaped to fit over the upper beaded portion of the door frame, both of said spring clips being retained in engagement with the respective beaded portions of thedoor frame by the ,door, when the latter is in a, closed position, a garment hanger supporting member slidably and pivotally mounted on said bracket, and coacting means between the inner end of the garment hanger supporting member and the standard for locking the garment hanger supporting member in a, raised operative position.
9. A support for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions, and
a door; comprising a base adapted. torest; on the noon-:3, spring clip extending laterally from the base and-shaped: to fit over the lower beaded portion-of; the door frame, a vertically adjustable standard mounted on the base, a bracket carried by the upper end of the standard, a spring clip extending laterally from said bracket and shaped to fit over the upper beaded portion of the door frame, both of said spring clips being retained in engagement with the respective beaded portions of the door frame by the door,. when the latter is in a closed position, a garment hanger supporting member slidably and pivotally mounted on said bracket, a 1ip struck out from the upper portion of the standard, and. a coacting hook formed on the inner end of the garment hanger supporting member for engagement with the lip to lock the garment hanger supporting member in a horizontal operative position.

A support for garment hangers for use in an automobile having a floor, a door frame provided with beaded upper and lower portions, and a door; comprising a base plate adapted to rest on the floor, a spring clip extending laterally from the base plate and shaped to fit over the lower beaded portion of the door frame, a socket extending upwardly from the base plate, a vertically adjustable standard having its lower end removably fitted in; said; socket, a-bracket carried by' the upper end ofthe; standard; a spring clip extending laterally from the bracketand shaped to fit over'the' upper beaded portion of the door frame; both. of said spring clips being retained in engagement with thev respective beaded portions of the. door frame by the door when the latter is in a fullyclosedposition,v and a garment hanger supporting. member mounted on said bracket and" extending laterally therefrom in a direction opposite that from which the upper spring clip extends.
