Description
J. W. MQGIRR GARMENT HANGER Filed NOV. 29, 1946 INVENTOR h L/SEFH 17V M5 EJR AT TDRNE 7 .l 5 l; K. 9 I). S 0W mx, Q uw v Patented Aug. 9, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved garment hanger and has special reference to a combined coat and pants hanger and to an improved means for retaining the pants on the hanger.
One of theA objects of the present invention is to form the hanger with a pair of downwardly and outwardly extending arms and a lower horizontally disposed pants retaining bar, which bar is integral with one of the arms at one outer end portion thereof and is open with respect to the other end portion of the opposite arm, whereby a pair of trousers can be readily slipped on and removed from the bar in the simplest manner, an improved clamping member being provided for preventing the trousers from slipping off of the bar.
Another object of the present invention is to slidably support the clamping member on the hanger through the medium of a vertically disposed rod centrally positioned on the said hanger and clamping member and to further provide a coil spring on the said rod for resiliently extending the clamping member against the lower horizontal bar of the hanger for retaining the trousers thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a pair of oppositely opposed nger holds positioned astraddle the said coil spring to facilitate the opening of the clamping member.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a vertical guide at one end portion of the clamping member to assist in guiding and slidably supporting the clamping member.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger of the character described that is durable, simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and highly ei`cient and serviceable in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein for the purpose of illustration like numerals designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a preferred form of garment hanger embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 1'2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in direction of the arrows, for the purpose of clarity the hook for retaining the clamping member upwardly being shown in its lower vertical position,
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the garment hanger, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View taken through 2 une i-e of rig. 1, looking in direction of# thea;- row, illustrating a guide employed in the invention. `Referring in detail to the drawingl and to the different parts thereof the numeral 5 dsg'iiates the improvedl garment hanger as awhole', made of any suitable material and embodying in its construction a pair of downwardly and outwardly extending arms 6 and l, capable of retaining a coat 6r the like, and a lower horizontally disposed oar S, capable of rc'etainirig apair of trousers, which bar 8 is integral with the arm 1 as at 9 and open with respect to the arm t as at I0. The said opening Iil provides space for permitting the trousers to be slipped over the outer end II of the horizontal bar 8 and placed over the said bar in the simplest and most efficient manner. A supporting hook I2 is fixed to the upper central portion of the hanger as shown in Fig. 1 and extends in the said hanger as at I3 in Fig. 2.
A clamping member designated as a whole by the numeral I/l is provided and embodies in its construction a straight bar I5 and an upper extending central portion I, which central portion is apertured, as at I'I, for accommodating a vertical rod E8, which rod I8 is fixed in the upper central portion of the garment hanger and slidably extends in the said aperture as illustrated to advantage in Figs. 1' and 2. A suitable coil spring it is mounted on the said rod I8 and compressed against the upper central portion of the said clamping member for resiliently retaining the same against the lower horizontal bar 8 for clamping the trousers thereon. The said horizontal bar 8 is preferably recessed as at 20 to provide space for accommodating the extra thickness of material at the seam or" the trousers. A pair of oppositely opposed curved arms 2l and 22 extend outwardly from the upper central portion i6 of the clamping member forming finger holds as at 23 and 2s to facilitate the opening of the clamping member with respect to the horizontal bar 8 as shown to advantage in dot and dash outline in Fig. 1. A staple 25 is xed to the central portion I5 of the clamping member, forming a suitable projection, whereby a hook 25 pivotally secured to the garment hanger by a bolt 21, functions to retain the said clamping member in its upper open position. The said bolt 2l is provided with a nut 28, which nut is tightened against the lower end portion of the supporting hook I2 and the upper end portion of the vertical rod I8 for rigidly retaining the same in the body of the hanger.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated to advantage the obvious that the present invention provides a new and improved garment hanger in which the trousers can readily be placed on the lower horizontal bar thereof in the simplest manner and positively retained thereon by an improved clamping member embodying in its construction novel features facilitating operation and providing a unique article of manufacture.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A garment hanger of the character described comprising an upper elongated member having a pair of oppositely disposed-outwardly extending substantially horizontal arms forming a coat hanger, a supporting hook fixed to the upper central portion thereof, a lower horizontally disposed bar extending from an end portion of the coat hanger, the said lower bar forming a trouser hanger, a curved recess in the upper face of the said trouser hanger to provide space for accommodating the extra thickness of material at the seam portion of the trousers, a vertically movable bar for clamping the trousers on the lower bar forming the trouser hanger, an aperture vertically provided in the central portion of the c-lamping bar, a downwardly extending vertical guide rod fixed to' the central portion of the coat hanger and slidably mounted in the said aperture of the clamping bar, a coil spring positioned on the said rod and compressed against the clamping bar, and a pair of iinger holes formed on the clamping bar astraddle the center thereof to facilitate the lifting of the same to an upper position from the trouser hanger.
