O/ga 5. Eve/e12 United States Patent 3,261,518 COMBINATION COAT AND SKIRT HANGER Oiga G. Everett, Charette Products Corp., 6 E. 32nd St., New York, N.Y. Filed Sept. 9, 1964, Ser. No. 395,216 1 Claim. (Cl. 22391) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers.
A principal object of the present invention according to one embodiment thereof is to provide a combined coat hanger and clamping skirt hanger in a unitary structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of this kind with a cover to protect the structure and to enhance the appearance of the structure.
A further object according to a modification of the invention is to provide a hanger for clamping the sides of a skirt in supported condition, the hanger being covered to protect the hanger and garments hung thereon, and to prevent rust and to enhance the appearance of the hanger.
Still another object according to another modification of the invention is to provide a coat hanger with pivotal devices for clamping the sides of the skirt thereto.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a hanger with a pair of spring clips for clamping the sides of one end of a skirt thereto.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a combined coat hanger and clamping skirt hanger made in accordance with one form of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a similar view with the cover almost completely removed therefrom.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of one end of the coat hanger unit.
FIG. 6 is a view taken on the line 6-6 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 6A is a front elevational view of the structure of FIG. 1 showing a coat in supported condition thereon, parts being shown broken away, parts being shown in section.
FIG. 7 is a front elevational view of a skirt hanger embodying a modified form of the invention, a skirt being shown in supported condition in dash lines.
FIG. 8 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of FIG. 7.
FIG. 9 is a front elevational view of a combined coat hanger and clamping skirt hanger embodying another modified form of the invention, the clamping clips being shown in inoperative position.
FIG. 10 is a bottom plan view of one end of the structure of FIG. 9.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a combined coat hanger and clamping skirt hanger is illustrated and designated generally as 10. The device 10 includes a coat hanger unit 12 and a skirt hanger unit 14.
The coat hanger unit 12 comprises a slightly curved body 16 formed of an elongated loop of round wire 18 covered with fabric padding material 20 encased in a fabric cover 22. The cover is round in cross section as seen in FIG. 3. Midway the ends of the cover there is a hole 24 extending centrally therethrough.
The skirt hanger unit 14 comprises a body formed of two curved round wire arms 26, 26 joined at their top ends by a shank portion 28 of a hook 30, the shank and ends being welded or otherwise suitably fastened to each other. The joint between the hook and arms extends through the bottom of the hole 24 in the cover 22 and through the space between the looped wire 18 and out through the top of the hole, the shank extending above the body of the hanger. The hole is preferably covered by a ribbon 32 formed into a bow 34 for appearance sake. The arms terminate at their ends in flattened coiled formations consisting of flattened spring loops 36 forming spring clips 40 extending lengthwise of the ends of the arms 26. The coils can be separated under pressure and will return to normal position upon release of the pressure. The skirt hanger is covered with a velvet cloth 44, which may be of a color contrasting with the color of the cover 22 of the pad on the coat hanger unit 12.
In FIG. 6A, a fabric coat 50 is shown supported on the hanger structure 10, the shoulders 52 of the coat embracing the shoulder portions of the body of the hanger unit 12, with the collar 54 of the coat encircling the shank 28 of the hook 30, the hook extending above the coat for mounting on a rod or the like. The clamping coiled clips 36 of the skirt hanger unit 14 are disposed inside the breast of the coat without interfering with the hanging of the coat.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, a modified form of clamping skirt hanger 14' construction is shown. The hanger 14' differs from the skirt hanger 14 in that the arms 26' depend only a short distance below the bottom of the shank 28' of the hook 30' and then extends at right angles to the plane of the shank. The joint between the bottom of the shank and the arms 26' is covered with velvet cover 60 similar to the material of the cover of the arms and coiled clips 36'. A skirt 58 is shown clamped between the coils of the clips 36' and suspended from the hanger.
A more simplified form of combined coat hanger and clamping skirt hanger 10a. is shown in FIGS. 9 and 10; wherein the coat hanger unit 12a differs from the coat hanger unit 12 of FIG. 1 in that the shank 28a of the hook 30a extends upwardly through a recess in the top center of the body of the coat hanger. In this form, the clamping skirt hanger 14a is constituted by a pair of spring wire elongated coils 36a pivotal-1y mounted on pivot pins 64 at one end extending cross-wise of the body of the coat hanger. Grooves 6 6 are formed in the bottom surface of the body of the hanger unit 12a at its ends, the grooves intersecting the ends of the body, as seen in FIG. 10.
In use, the coiled clips 36a are swung outwardly of the grooves to the posit-ions shown .in FIG. 10 whereupon the ends of the top of a skirt may be inserted between the spring coils and the coils, with the ends of the skirt therein swung inwardly into the grooves 66, the grooves being sufiiciently wide for this operation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construct-ions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may 3 be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is: A combined coat and skirt hanger comprising a curved body portion of elongated looped wire for supporting a coat, a cover of padding for said body portion, a substantially invented V-shaped elongated body portion of curved round Wires, 2. cover of velvet for said V-shaiped body portion, an upstanding hook secured to and connecting said body portions, a cover of velvet for said hook, and spring velvet covered clips of coil fonmaoion on the free ends of said V-s-ha-ped body portion, said clips being in line with the ends of the curved body portion, the coils of said clips adapted to grip the top end of a skint for supporting said skirt in suspended condition.
