Description

G. L. MILES.
Soap Bubble Pipe.
/ Ill 7 r/m u. PETERS. mwmnu n mr. wman m mc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT L. MILES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SETH S. BARNES AND EDWARD FLASH, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
SOAP-BUBBLE PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,215, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed January 9.0, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, G. L. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at city, county,
and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bubble-Pipes, of
which the following'is a description.
My invention consists in a soap-bubble pipe, which is interiorly covered or lined with soap or other similar substance, from which, with the addition of water, bubbles can be produced by blowing through the pipe, said soap lining being securely held inside of the pipe-bowl by means of perforations or indentations therein.
I am aware that prior to my invention a bubble-pipe has been patented having grooves formed in its lip or edge for the reception outside of the bowl of only a very small quantity of soap. I therefore do notclaim such a hubble-pipe.
The figure of the annexed drawing is a diametrical section through the bowl and part of the stem of myimproved soap-bubble pipelined.
My improved bubble-pipe bowl A is preferably made of the shape represented by the fig 2 5 ure, although other shapes may be adopted.
B is the stem, which may be a flexible tube and a is the air-hole.
I perforate or indent the bowl A at h h, for the purpose of receiving portions of the soap o linings, and forming keys for positively fixing this lining in its place.
(No model.)
It will be seen that the gist of my invention consists in fixing the soap lining inside of the bowl A, above the point whence the fluid is supplied to feed the growing bubble, thus in- 5 suring a free and uniform flow of glutinous liquid to the bubble as it is expanded by the breath.
It will also be seen that by my improvement the pipe may be successfully used for blowing great quantities of bubbles with the mouth of the bowl turned upward.
What I claim as my invention is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a soapbubble pipe provided with a soap lining, s, in 5 its interior, so arranged and fixed in place that the breath of the operator shall pass over the wet soap and convey the fluid to the bubble, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the bowl A, having a soap lining, s, the key-holes or depressions h, for fixing the lining in its pla e, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereto set my hand this 14th day of January, A. D. 1881.
