UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrron.
JABEZ BURNS, .OF NEW YORK, AND CHARLES S. HIGGINS AND XVILLIAM B. HIGGINS, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSET BASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,195, dated March 31, 1874 application filed March 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J ABEZ BURNS, of the city, county, and State of New York, and CHARLES S. HIGGINS and WILLIAM B. HIG- GINS, both of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Basins for Water- Closets and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a transverse section of this invention. the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a pocket or receptacle in the basin of a water-closet, said pocket being intended for the reception of soap or other disinfecting material, and situated in the course of the water injected into the basin, in such a manner that the water, before it passes through the basin, takes up a portion of the disinfecting material, andthereby the bad odor is destroyed, and at the same time the'receptacle retains the disinfecting material, and prevents it from clogging up the discharge opening or openings of the basin.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the basin of a water-closet, which may be made in the form represented in the drawing, or in the form generally used for water-closets. The water which is used for washing out this basin is injected through a pipe, B, and in the interior of the basin we have arranged a pocket, 0, which is intended for the reception of a Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of piece, D, of soap, or other disinfecting material. Said pocket is so situated that the water admitted by the pipe B has to sweep over the disinfecting material contained in the same, while at the same time the pocket is open, so that it does not interfere with the free passage of the water through the basin. For basins of urinals the position of the pocket will be changed to correspond to the position of the water-supply openings.
If the pocket is made as shown in the drawing, it may be provided with a stopper, E, in one end, so that the water admitted through the pipe B is compelled to pass out at the opposite end; and, if desired, the shell of the pocket may be perforated with more or less small holes, to increase the disinfecting effect of the water and of the disinfecting material.
The water, on passing through the pocket, sweeps over the disinfecting material, and it takes up a quantity of it, so that, by the solution thus injected into the basin, the bad odor liable to arise from said basin under certain circumstances is counteracted and destroyed.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of a pocket, 0, for the reception of soap or other disinfecting material, in the basin A of a water-closet, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
