Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Claraand State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Sanitary Toilet- Bowls, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to a sanitary toilet bowl. 1
The object of the present invention is to provide a receptacle in or exterior of a toilet bowl adapted to receive a disinfectant and to provide means for automatically dis charging a quantity of same when the bowl is flushed.
The invention. consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central, vertical section of the toilet bowl. Fig. 2 is a plan view on line 22, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates in general the toilet bowl, 2 an intake opening which is connected with a tank or other source of water supply, not here shown; and 3 a discharge opening which is connected with a main chamber 4 by means of a passage, indicated at 5. Formed in the intake opening 2 just above the openingv 6 leading into the main chamber, is a pocket-or receptacle 7, which'is perforated around the sides and the bottom,
as indicated at 8 and 9; and formed just above said pocket, is an opening 10, which is adapted to be closed by means of a removable cover 11. The pocket 7 is adapted toreceive or form a container for a disin-- fectant, said disinfectant preferably being in the form of a solid, which is slowly dissolved by the action of the water.
Formed in the intake opening 2 just below the disinfectant receiving chamber 7 is a barrier 12 and similarly formed near opening 6, is a barrier 13; and extending from a point just rearwardly of barrier 13 to the lower portion of the bowl, indicated at 14, is an auxiliary drain passage 15, the function of which will later be described. The
removable cover 11 provided in this instance consists of the cover 11, on the lower end of which is formed a threaded extension 16, which screws into across-bar 17;
. curingthe cover in position.
this cross-bar is sufficiently long to extend across the opening and is lowered into its normal position through slots 18, formed in the side of opening 10. The cover 11 and bar 17 is then slightly turned until the bar assumes the position approximately such as shown in Fig. 2, out of alinement with slots 18. The 'cover section is then turned by means of. a spanner wrench inserted into depressions 19 formed in the cover, thus Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
drawing the crossbar up against the under side of the opening 10; and thoroughly se- In operation it will be seen that flushing of the toilet will cause the water from the source of supply to enter opening 2 in the direction of arrow a. A portion of the water is here deflected upwardly, as indicated by arrowb, and is in this manner forced through openings 8 into the chamber 7 containing the solid, but soluble disinfectant. The water then passes through opening 6 in the direction of the arrow, through the main chamber 4; passage 5, and finally through the discharge opening 3; in the usual manner; flushed and the contents of chamber? become so saturated with water that a quantity of same is dissolved. The dissolving matter'will then drain through the bottom perforations9and collect between barriers 12 and 13,'where it is finally permitted to drain The toilet bowl is in this manner through passage 15 into the lower portion of the bowl, thus thoroughly disinfecting the bowl and the watercontained' therein.
In practice it has been found that certain varieties of disinfectants have a tendency to'stain the bowl. present instance, as none of the disinfectis admitted through the main opening 6 and the bowl. The auxiliary drain passage 15 being provided for the purpose of This is'obviated in the admitting the disinfectant tothe lower por- I tion of the bowl, where it is furthermore 16 1 most efiiciently applied.
The materials and finish together with the construction and the location of the device, may otherwise be such as the judgment and experience of the manufacturer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may scope of the appended claims, and that I do not wish to limit myself to thespecific design and construction here shown.
be resorted to within the V sage formed in the bowl and leading from said chamber to the bottom of the bowl.
2. The combination with the water inlet opening of a toilet bowl, of a perforated container formed insaid inlet opening, said container adapted to serve receptacle for a disinfectant which is in a solid, but soluble state, and a barrier member mounted in the inlet opening below the disinfectant container to. direct a portion of h flushing water through the container when the toilet is flushe 3. The combination with the water inlet opening of a toilet bowl, of a perforated container formed insaid inlet opening, said contalner adapted to serve as'a receptacle for a disinfectant which is in a solid, but soluble state, a barrier member mounted in the inlet opening below the disinfectant container, .a second barrier member mounted forward of the first-named barrier member to form a pocket below the disinfectant con- .tainer, and a drain passage formed in the bowl connecting Said Pocket, with the lower portion of the-main chamber in-the bowl.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing 'wltnessess ALEXANDER D. GRANT.
