Patented Apr. 22, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in garments, the principal object in view being to provide a unitary combination garment designed for folding and draping n the person in a single piece to form a dress and shorts, and which requires a minimum of material, is secured in place without metal fasteners, and may be inexpensively produced and easily and quickly put on or taken off.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and'forming a part of this specification.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a'view in front elevation of my improved combination garment as it is designed to be worn,
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the garmentzbefore it is put on and in unfolded condition,
7 Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation illustrating the manner in which the garment is folded in putting on the same,
Figure4 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of the skirt forming section, and
Figure 5 is a View of the garment in spread out flat condition.
Referring to the drawings, by numerals, in the preferred illustrated embodiment thereof, my invention comprises a unitary,; foldable sectional robe I of substantially inverted T-shape when unfolded and spread out flat which may be formed of any suitable cloth, and is patterned to provide an elongated, shield-like, waist-forming end section 2. The end section 2 is provided, in the longitudinal center thereof, with a neck opening 3 and terminates on one side of the opening 3. Said end section 2 is designed to be folded over the shoulders of the wearer upon opposite sides of the neck opening 3 to provide the waist back 4 and a waist front 5, longer than the back 4, for a purpose presently seen. The waist front 5 merges into a crotch section 6 relatively narrower than said front 5 and which, in turn, merges into a relatively wider seat-forming section 1 for the shorts which flares from the section IS. The seat-forming section I comprises a central upper edge extension of a relatively wider skirt forming section 8.
The described robe is suitably hemmed along its edges as represented at 9, and around the neck opening 3, as at In.
(org-71) The end section 2, above the crotch section 6, is provided with scalloped side edges to form a pair of opposed side edges, triangular tabs II in the transverse center of the waist back 4, and a pair of similar tabs I2 in the waist front 5.
A pair of tape ties I3 are suitably secured at one end to the tabs I I, and a similar pair of tape ties I4 to the tabs I2. A pair of underarm loops I i are suitably attached to opposite side edges of the waist back 4 between the tabs I I and the neck opening 3. A pair of ribbon-like ties I5 are attached to the waist front 5 at the side edge thereof between the neck opening Send the tabs I2. The Waist back 4 is suitably divided, as at I6, from the neck opening to form a placket opening and provided with a button I1 and a loop I8 for closing said opening,
A pair of back ribbon-like ties Ill-are provided on the skirt-forming section 8 to extend oppositely from the longitudinal .center line of the robe I and along what constitutes the top, or waist line, of said section 8, said ties having inner end portions suitably secured, as by stitches 'I9,'to the section, I
The seat-forming section I and skirt-forming section 8 may be suitably gathered, as at 20, upon opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the robe I to shape the same, The waist back 4 may be gathered, as represented at 2|, for the same purpose.
The described robe I is preferably formed of four pieces of cloth joined together in the longi tudinal center of the robe by a seam 22 and in the transverse center of the crotch-forming section 6 by a seam 23. The skirt-forming section 8 is reinforced on the inner side thereof along said seam 22 by the hem 24. From the skirtforming section 8, the robe I is reinforced along said seam 22 to the neck opening 3 by the hem 25, said hem being on the opposite side of the robe which, as will presently appear, forms the inner side of the crotch-forming section 6 and the waist front 5.
Referring now to the use of the described robe I in forming the garment, and to Figures 1 and 3, the waist-forming end section 2 is put on over the head of the wearer by means of the neck opening 3, with the waist back 4 and the waist front 5 draped down the back and the front of the wearer. This positions the loops I4 under the arms of the wearer. The described placketforming opening is closed by means of the button I1 and loop I8. The ties I4 and tabs I2 are pulled rearwardly and said ties I4 tied behind the waist back. The ties I3 and tabs II are then pulled forwardly and said ties i3 tied in front of the waist front as shown in Figure 3. One tie l of each pair is then passed through the loop M on the same side of the said section 2 to fasten the waist back 4 and waist front 5 together under the arms, and the ties iii of the pairs are passed across the waist front 5 under and over the same with one tie of each pair extending out of the neck opening 3 and tied to the other tie of the pair as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The crotchforming section 5 is then passed rearwardly between the legs of the wearer as shown generally in Figure 3, in which operation, as will be clear, the waist front 5 forms the front leg portions 215 of a pair of shorts. The seat-forming section? is then folded up behind the posterior of the wearer, as also indicated in Figure 3, the skirtforming section 8 folded at its juncture line with said section E to hang downwardly, as also shown in Figure 3, and said section 8 wrapped forwardly around the'waist line, hips, and legs of the wearer, as represented in Figure 1. To fasten the skirtforming section in position, the ties 59 are brought forwardly around the sides of the waist of the wearer and tied with the upper corners of the skirt forming section 8, as shown in Figure l, at the sides of the wearer, with the sides of said section 3 overlapping in front of the wearer and the tie I9 on each side tied with the upper corner of said section 8 which has been brought forwardly from the other side of the wearer.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
