Description

(No Model.)
W. W. WHITAKER.
Mitten.
No. 241,837. Patented May 24,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. WHITAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NElV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO DANIEL S. HULETT, OF SAME PLACE.
MITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,837, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed April 15, 1881.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WM. W. WHITAKER, a citizen of the Uni ted States, residing atGloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mittens; and Idohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a mitten having a I 5 single-ply back and two-ply wrist knit in a continuous piece, with selvages; and also in a leather palm having the edge of the leather overstitched or overcast before being attached to the mitten.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is the leather palm and borderpieces, with their edges overstitched, ready to be attached to the mitten. Fig. 2 is a back view of the complete mitten. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line .90 :0, Fig. 2.
In the manufacture of my improved mitten, I first knit a blank for the single-ply back and (N0 model.)
two-ply wrist in acontinuous piece, and then introvert the wrist, as shown in Fig. 3, the singleplyback being shown at A, Fig. 2, the wristat B, with the intro erted part at 0. Then I cut the palm-leather D and border-strips E and F, and overstitch or overcast the edges, as seen at G. This overstitehin g orovercastin g prevents the edge of the leather from stretching, and al 0 5 gives a neat finish to the mitten.
The palm-leather may haw-'e a lining, H, Fig.
3, and a tlap, I, may be attached to the wrist, to aid in pulling on the mitten and prevent stretching the knit wrist. 40
Having described my in vention, what I claim 1s 1. A mitten having a single-ply back and two-ply wrist knit in a continuous piece, with selvages, substantially as set forth.
2. In a'mitten having a leather palm, the overstitched or overcast edge, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM \V. WHITAKER.
