Application August 8, 1945, Serial No. 609,616
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in welders helmets, and more particularly to means for ventilating the inside of the helmet and thus to cool the head of the person Wearing the same.
An important object of the present invention is to provide means for attaching an air hose to the head band to which the helmet is pivotally attached and without interfering with the move.- ment of the helmet into its raised or lowered position.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and attach in position to the helmet without necessitating any material changes or alterations therein and which otherwise is well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational View with parts broken away and shown in section,
Figure 2 is a rear elevational View, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on a line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a welders helmet of conventional construction and which includes horizontal and vertical head bands 6 and 1. One of the sides of the helmet is pivotally attached by means of a pin 8 to the vertical head band 1 to provide for the raising and lowering of the helmet in front of the face of a person.
The helmet 5 and head bands 6 and l are of conventional construction, and accordingly a detailed explanation thereof is not believed necessary.
To the vertical band I is secured a pair of split clamps 9 by means of which a pipe T is clamped in position on top of the head band.
A hose H is attached at one end to the rear end of the T I0 and extends downwardly at the back of the helmet and is attached to the belt or other suitable garment of the welder at the waist thereof by means of a conventional form of resilient fastener I2. The hose H leads to a suitable source of compressed air, and at its point of attachment to the belt or other garment of the welder, the hose II is provided with a manually controlled valve I3.
A pair of flexible hose l4 and I5 extend from the sides of the fitting l9 and are attached in a forwardly extending position at the sides of the horizontal head band 6 by means of clamps l6.
Accordingly, in the operation of the device, air is admitted into the hose II by the opening of the valve I3 and is discharged forwardly at the inside of the helmet 5 at opposite sides of the horizontal head band 6 for circulation around the head of the wearer and thus serve to cool the head of the person wearing the helmet.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention that the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A ventilating attachment for welders helmets of a type including a horizontal and a vertical head band, a T fitting attached to the vertical head band, an air hose attached to said T fitting and extending downwardly behind the helmet, and a pair of hose sections attached to said fitting at the sides thereof and extending downwardly into the helmet at the sides of the horizontal head band.
2. A ventilating attachment for welders helmets of a type including horizontal and a vertical head band, a T fitting attached to the vertical head band, an air hose attached to said T fitting and extending downwardly behind the helmet, a pair of hose sections attached to the sides of said fitting and extending downwardly and forwardly at the sides of the horizontal head band and means for attaching said hose sections to the sides of the horizontal head band.
3. A ventilating attachment for welders helmets of a type including a horizontal and a vertical head band, a T fitting attached to the vertical head band, an air hose attached to said T fitting and extending downwardly behind the helmet, a pair of hose sections attached to the sides of said fitting and extending downwardly and forwardly at the sides of the horizontal head band, and means for attaching said hose sections to the sides of the horizontalhead band, means for attaching the first-named air hose to the back of a person, and a valve in said air hose.
WILBUR DANIEL OQUINN.
