CORN-POPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,066, dated April 12, 1881.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ALICE BOISE W001), of BeaverDam, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Corn-Popper, of which the followingis a specification.

The invention consists in a corn popper formed of two hemispheres of wire work or netting, which are hinged to each other and are provided with a device for locking them together, one of which hemispheres is attached to a rod passing longitudinally through a wooden cylindrical handle, and is provided with an arm at the end for turning the rod, whereby the ball containing the corn is revolved.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of my improved corn-popper, showingit opened. Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal view and sectional elevation, showing it closed.

The two hemispheresjA and B, made of any suitable wire-work, are'hinged-to each other by wires 0 O or any other suitable hinge. A strong wire, D, passes around the upper edge of the hemisphere B, and this wire forms the rod E, by means of which the popper is rotated. A wooden cylinder, F, provided with metal washersG Gr at the ends, is passed overthis rod E, and is prevented from sliding longitudinally on the same by the collars H H. The outer end of this rod or wire E is bent to form a short arm or loop, J. The hemisphere A is provided with a rim, K, which overlaps the edge of the hemisphere B, and has an aperture, L, at its end adjoining the inner end of the rod E. Abolt, M, having a wooden knob, N, slides on the rod E, between theinner end of the wooden cylinder F and the hemisphere B, and. by passing the end of this bolt M into the aperture L of the rim K the two hemispheres A and B will be locked to each other.

The wire D is twisted to form a projecting 5 arm, 0, opposite the rod E, to support the ball formed by the hemispheres. The hemispheres may be made of perforated material.

The operation is asfollowsz The corn is put into the hemisphere B. The hemispheres are then looked together by pushing the bolt M forward, so that the same passes into the ap erture L of the rim K. The ball is then placed over the fire, the wooden handle F being grasped with one hand, whereas the ball is rotated with the other hand. The finger can be passed into the, loop or ring J, and the ball canthus be revolved very conveniently. The ball can be supported bythe projection orarm O, which rests on the edge of the stove. The ball formed by the two hemispheres can be opened without burning or soiling the hands by drawing the bolt M, provided with the wooden knob or button N, backward. The handle 1* and the rod are to be four or live times as long as the diameter of the ball, so that the person holding the popper need not have his fingers near the fire.

This device can be used over the round opening of a kitchen-stove, the weight beingmainly supported by the projection O, which, in this case, rests upon the top of the stove beyond the fire; or the popper may alsobe used in a parlor-stovc.

Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a corn-popper, the combination, with the hinged hemispheres A and B, of the rod E, the wooden cylinder F, the rim K, having an aperture, L, and the bolt M, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
