' .St'raw Burning Furnace. I No 240,031. Patented April 12,1881.
".PEYERS P'flOYo-UTHOGBAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C. A
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
WALTER J. F. LIDDELL, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
STRAW-BURNING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 240,031, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed January 13, 1881. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. F. LID- DELL, of Charlotte, county of Mecklenburg, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw- Burning Furnaces for Portable Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section through my improved furnace, and Fig.2 is a perspective view of the same, showing a modification in the arrangement of the feed-chute.
My invention relates to an improvement upon the furnace for portable boilers upon which Letters Patent were granted to me February 29, 1876, No.174,139; and it consists in the combination, with said furnace, of a feed-chute opening into the fire-pot at its rear end, opposite to the fire-door, for adapting it to be used as a straw-burner, as hereinafter described.
The furnace and boiler are similar in their construction and arrangement to those described in my former patent referred to, andneed not therefore be described here further than is necessary to an understanding of my present improvement, adapting said furnace to the use, also, of straw for fuel, when desired.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the'fire-pot; B, the tubular boiler, one end of which projects within the fire-pot overhanging the grate (J, as shown in Fig. 1; and D is the fire-door, through which ordinary fuel is supplied to the furnace, said parts being similar in construction and arrangement to the corresponding parts in my former patent referred to. The rear wall of the furnace thus constructed is perforated at a to receive the lower end of a straw-feeding chute, E, which may extend under the boiler, inclining upward to its rear end, as shown in Fig. 1; or it may straw, which can be fed or thrust forward intothefurnace by any suitable appliance for that purpose, as required.
The chute is designed only for the supply of straw or analogous material for fuel, ordinary fuel, when used, and the oxygen or external air for promoting combustion being supplied in the usual or any preferred manner.
Bythe construction and arrangement shown and described a very simple and eifective straw burning attachment to the ordinary portable boiler-furnace isobtained, one which does not interfere in any way with the use of thefurnace with the ordinary fuel when required, while at the same time it is in readiness for use as a straw-burner wheneverit becomes desirable to use straw for fuel.
I am aware that a rear feeding-chute has been employed in a boiler; but this was placed inside the boiler and in contact with the flame. This I do not claim; but,
Having now described my invention, I claim- The combination, with'the furnace having the usual fire-door, of the straw-burning attachment or chute, arranged outside of the boiler and opening into the rear end of the firepot, opposite the fire-door below said boiler, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WALTER J. F. LID'DELL.
