SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,420, dated April 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, EDWARD HUBER, of Marion, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Burning Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of a furnace for that class of cylindrical boilers known as the return-fine7 or Cornish steam-boiler.
In burning straw or other light fuel in the furnace of these boilers as ordinarily constructed a moderately-strong draft will carry the blaze back to the rear end of the grate before the flame and heat will act upon the upper part of the ue or crown-sheet.
The object of my invention is to obviate this defect and also to economize fuel. To such end I extend out the center flue and cut away the lower part of said extension, which I provide with grates, doors, a feeding-chute, and ash-pit, all as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a boiler of the rclass before referred to with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the linear fr, Fig. 3; and Fig. Sis a View partly in section and partly in side elevation.
A indicates the boiler-shell, and B theusual steam-dome.
The central flue, C, is extended out from the shell or casing A, and about one-third of the lower portion of said extension is out away, as shown in Fig. 3.
D indicates the grate bars of the grate, which is arranged in a horizontal plane across the lower edges, d, of the cut-away portion of the central flue, thus leaving a space, d', between the grate and the lower part of the iluc for raking out ashes and cinders. The extension O of the central flue is provided with the doors E E, so that access can be had to said extension above the grate-bars.
F indicates the ash-pit, arranged below the extension C of the central iue, for collecting ashes and cinders, said ash-pit being provided with a suitable door, F', by means of which the draft can be regulated, and also ready access had to the ash-pit for the purpose of cleaning it out.
G indicates the feeding chute, which is adapted to be connected with the extension of the central llue, as illustrated in Fig. 3the doors of said extension being swung open when it is desired'to connect the chute with the iue for the purpose of firing with straw or other light fuel. This chute is provided with a hinged drop door or lid, H, which normally closes the passage through the chute, whereby air is prevented from passing into the furnace above the fuel while feeding, the said door being raised only while passing in the fuel, after which it drops by gravity and closes the chute.
In burning straw or other light fuel the same will be introduced by means of the chute in small quantities, the same being ignited and burned while passing from the grate-bars. By placing the grate-bars forward in this extension the fiames will act upon the forward part of the lue instead of being carried back, as heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a return-liuc boiler, the center iiue, O, extended out from the boiler, and having the lower portion of said extended part cut away, the extension thus formed being provided with grate-bars arranged above the level of the lower portion of the flue, and being also provided with doors arranged to close the same above the .grate-bars, substantially as `described.
2. 'Ihe combination, in a return-flue boiler, of the center ilue, C, formed with an extension, O', beyond the boiler, of the grate arranged in said extension, and a chute, G, provided with a hinged drop-door, H, substantially as described.
