Description

(NnModeL) G. CAMPBELL.
" Cigarette Case. No. 239,932. Patented April 12,1 81.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CAMPBELL, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
CIGARETTE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 239,932, dated April 12,, 1881. Application filed February 10,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CAMPBELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residin g at Rich mond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes for Holding Cigarettes; and I do' hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of the specification.
My invention relates to a box or an envelope for containing cigarettes, a cigarette-holder, and matches or other substances; and the object of my improvement is to provide an envelope for carrying cigarettes, a cigaretteholder, and matches of such convenient form as to be readily placed in the pocket of the person carrying it. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the twoparts of the envelope, the interior portion being partially removed to show the position of the cigarettes therein, and the pocket for containing the holder, with the roughened surface on the top thereof for igniti'u gthe matches. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the interior portions of the envelope, the pocket for receiving the holder, and the space for matches; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the removable pocket with the holder in position within it.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 7
In constructing boxes or envelopes of this character there is formed a rectangular portion,A, which,by preference, is made of heavy paper or of card-board, but which may be of any suitable material, it being of such size as to adapt it for being worn in the pocket of a coat or other garment. This portion of the device may be open at both of its ends, but is providecLwith a bottom, cover, and two sides, to enable it to receive an interior portion, soon to be described, and protect itscontents. The interior portion of the envelope also consists of-a rectangular box, B, made of the same material as the outer portion, or of any other that is suitable for the purpose, it differing from the outside portion in that it has no top, but has a bottom and sides and ends. It also has a flap, B, upon one of its ends, for covering a portion of the cigarettes, and upon its opposite end a flap, B, for covering the pocket which contains the holder and the space in v which the matches are placed. The flap B has upon itsouter surface, or in some convenient locality, a piece of sand or emery paper, 0, or a roughened surface, upon which to ignite matches.
The dimensions of the part B are such as to allow it to be passed into the outer portion, A, but to fit snugly therein, its length being such as to enable it to receive a layer or layers of cigarettes, as shown in the drawings, and at the same time leave a space at their ends for a removable pocket, D, which is of sufficient dimensions to receive a cigaretteholder, D, the length of which is such as to cause it to pass between. the sides of the part B when placed transversely therein.
If desirable, the lengths of the parts A and B, may be such as to leave room for the cigarettes, the pocket containing the holder, and a space outside of them for the reception of matches; or this space may be omitted and the parts he of such length only as to allow of placing therein the cigarettes and holder, the proportions of a space for matches being a mere matter of convenience and not an indis- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
An envelope adapted for the reception of l cigarettes and a cigarette-holder, and to be worn in the pocket of the person carrying it, combining in its construction an outer rectangular portion, A, an inner portion, B, and a removable compartment, D, arranged transversely in the portion B for the reception of a cigarette-holder, the portion B beingprovid ed with flaps B and B the former for covering GEORGE CAMPBELL.
