HANDLE AND CASE.

' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,115, dated March 22, 1881.

.Handles and Case; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to form a two: part air-tight handle and a convenient fastening for tools used in cutting, puncturing, and similar purposes in mechanical operations, for toilet and pocket articles for special convenience in traveling, and for instruments used by professional men, which can be quicklydisengaged from the holder or handle and another substituted, or, when separated, conveniently packed in a small compass in the handle for future use.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figures 1 and 2 represent the two parts of the handle, the first showing the grooves along its .sides, the angular fastening, and space for containing tools or articles desired. The second represents the opposite part of the handle, showing the small flanges intended to glide into the grooves of the first part, for securing the two together, and also showingthe plate opposite the fastening in the first part and space for containing articles in it. Fig. 3 shows one of the tools or articles in position in the fastening; also shows the handle for containing articles. Fig. 4. shows the tool or article reversed in its fastening. Fig. 5 shows the parts of the handle united, and having one of the articles reversed to fill the fastening, and thereby produce an air-tight case. Fig. 6 shows the fastening detached. Fig. 7 shows the shank of the tool or article with its recesses corresponding with the fastening in the handle. a

A B are the two hollow halves of the handle, having the receptacles a and b, respectively. A has groovesa a along its sides,

into which flanges b b glide, and may be held closed by catch-cor other suitable means, securing the two parts together in the strongest manner possible, thus forming the Iconiplete handle and securely holding the tool in its angular fastening when the case is closed, as will be more fully explained hereinafter. The part A has in one end the right-angular fastening G, in the peculiar form shown, consisting of the rightangular projection 0, presenting shoulders c 0 and having a thin jawplate, 0 extending the length of the fastening.

used in the fastening are formed with angular recesses d! (1, having shoulders id (1 said recesses corresponding with the projections c of the fastening, so that the tool or articles may be fitted closely in to the fastening for use, as shown in Fig. 3, or placed in the reverse position shown in Fig. 4. The square shoulders of the articles bearing against the square shoulders of the fastening, in conjunction with the jaw-plates b and '0 make the strongest and most secure bearing to resist any strain or twist that is possible. The jaw-plates b and 0 being thin and short, articles may ex-w tend beneath them, and are prevented from falling out by them when the case is open, as well as allowing the full length of the case to accommodate the articles contained. It is be lieved that the reversible feature and the secure fastening are both entirely new and very valuable in such cases.

It is obvious when the smaller tools or articles are packed in the respective sides of the handle, and one of the tools or articles are reversed in its fastening and the case closed by gliding them together, that the reversed position of one of the articles in its fastening will not only protect that particular article betterthan heretofore, but that it will also exclude the moisture and dust from all the other contents of the handle by stopping up the only aperture through which the dust or V sirable with various cutlery, toilet articles,

small mechanical tools, and surgical or dental TOO instruments, for which this handle is peculiarly adapted, inasmuch as heretofore no such protection has been afforded with the same convenience.

5 It is obvious, too, that various pocket companions may be formed out of the elements of this device, among which may be named: mechanics companion, containing small tools,

which he might Wish to always have with him the ladys and gentlemans companion, filled with'such articles as would be convenient or needed by each, especially in traveling; the dentists or snrgeons companion, in which might be placed the various instruments desired always to have in the pocket; and last, but not least, the toilet companion, for either home or traveling, in the arrangement of which it is thought bestto fill the part B with fine tooth-powder or other dentifrice, and by moist- 2o ening the same reduce it'to the cake form, and having a tooth-brush reversed in the other part, when not in use, but which may be taken out and applied to the caked dentifrice, -when desired to be' used, with less loss of the dentifrice, with greater convenience, and provide greater protection to the brush than is the case in any device now in use.

The various forms of this device may be made out of any suitable material,.such as 0 the various metals, celluloid, rubber, ivory,

pearl, hard woods, &c., and may be made in an oval,elliptical, or other suitable form, in y'arious ornamental designs.-

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 5 Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A two-part handle, being secured together by grooves a and flanges I), in combination with the described right-angular fastening for instruments or articles desired to be 40 used in said handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1

2. In a tool or instrument handle, the two parts A B, having the right-angular fastening 0, said fastening being formed substantially 5 as described, in combination with tools or instruments with shanks formed to correspond with and fit into said fastening, either in the extended or reversed position, whereby air and moisture are practically excluded from the contents of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. As a new article of manufacture, the twopart handle A B, having the right-angular fastening C, said fastening formed substantially as described, in combination with a tooth-brush with its shank formedto correspond with and tit into said fastening, whereby air and moisture are practically excluded from the contents ofthe handle, substantiallyv as and for the purpose set forth.
