This invention relates to dispensing containers particularly although not exclusively of the type adapted for use as portable cigarette cases.

It is primarily within the contemplation of my invention to provide convenient means for holding cigarettes or other yarticles to be dispensedand for enabling the contents to be operatively moved into a convenient dispensing position and operatively returned to a closed retracted position.

It is an important object of this invention to obviate the use of flaps or drawer-like containers requiring relatively complicated operations. In the accomplishment of this objective, a construction is employed whereby two compartment members are moved in opposite directions, by means of a simple manual manipulation, to a projected dispensing position, the compartment members being readily returnable to their retracted position also by a simple manual manipulation.

It is a further object of this invention to enable the cigarettes or other articles which are to be dispensed to be housed in a completely enclosed container.

It is also within the contemplation of my invention yto provide a device of the above-mentioned category having what is commonly referred to as play-appeal whereby-the operative movements of the parts will prove attractive and of interest to a user.

And a further object of this invention is to prolvide a device of simple, readily fabricated conystruction capable of performing the aforesaid obiectives.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device of my invention shown in its open or dispensing condition and illustrating cigarettes as the articles to be dispensed. i

In the preferred form of my invention Aas illustrated in the drawing, there is an outer casing Ill open at opposite ends II and I2, the casing containing therein two pivotally mounted containers or compartment members I3 and I 4 movable outwardly in opposite directions through the said openings I I and I2, respectively. 'I'he pivotal mountings for the compartment members are the (Cl. 20G-41.1)

Shanks of the rivets I5 extending through the opposite walls I6 and I'I into the adjacent outer walls I8 and I8 of the compartment members I3 and I4,respectively.

.The said compartment members contain compartments 20 and 2|, the former including end wall I8, side walls 22 and 23, and inner wall 24, and the latter end wall I9, side Walls 25 and 26 and inner wall 2'I. The said members I3 and I4 Iare so disposed within the casing I0 Vthat their inner walls 24 and 21 are in adjacent relation when in their retracted position, as shown in Figure 3, the corners 28 and 29 .being in adjacent -relation when in their projected position as shown in Figure 2.

The bottoms 30 and 3| of the members I3 and I4 are connected bythe hinge member 32, preferably a strip of flexible tape, although it may be of rigidor of any other hinged construction within the contemplation of this invention. The inner walls 24 and 21 of the compartment members are connected likewise by hinge means, the drawing showing the flexible tape 33 serving this purpose. although rigid hinge means may also be employed Within the scope of this invention.

The said tape 33 is attached adhesively or by any other suitable means to said walls 24 and 2'I, and is of such length as to permit the compartment members I3 and I4 to be moved outwardly a predetermined distance. It is preferred that the limit set for said outward movement be such that the openings of the said members will be exposed just suniciently to permitvthe articles contained therein to be conveniently inserted and removed.

The bottom wall 34 of the casing I0 contains aperture 35 adapted Ito receive a flexible button 36 attached to the hinge member 32 when the device is in its retracted position. It is preferred that the proportions of the aperture and the button 36 be substantially the same so that the button will fit closely within said aperture.

In order to move the compartment members I3 and I4 4from the retracted positions shown in Figure 3 to their projected positions shown in Figure 2, a finger or a suitable instrument is brought into arrangement with the button 36 and pushed upwardly, thereby forcing the members I3 and I4 to swing into their projected positions. During this operation the nger or instrument is inserted into the aperture 35 until the compartment'members are brought to their nal projected positions. In this position the compartment members may be loa-ded or the articles contained therein dispensed.

To return the compartment members to their retracted positions, pressure is applied to the outer surface of walls I8 and I9, whereupon the compartment members are operatively forced back into the casing I0. In this position the contents of the compartment 20 and 2I are substantially sealed from the atmosphere in view of the fact that the proportions of walls I8 and I9 are, according to the preferred construction o! my invention, made so that they will completely ll in the opening II and I2 and serve as closures therefor.

It is understood that the embodiment above described and shown in the drawing isV merely illustrative of my invention, andthat numerous changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of this invention.

I claim:

1. A dispensing container comprising a casing having two oppositely disposed openings therein, two Vcompartment members disposed within the casing adjacent said openings, each of said members being pivotally mounted on at least one side wall of the casing at a point in the region of the adjacent opening and near the base of the member a flexible button connecting the lower portions of said members, the casing 4including a wall with an aperture therein adapted to receive said button therein when the compartment members are in their retracted positions, whereby entry may be made through said aperture to engage said button and actuate said members outwardly to predetermined projected positions.

A dispensing container comprising a casing having two oppositely disposed openings therein, two compartment members pivotally mounted within the casing and movable outwardly in opposite directions through said openings, the innermost walls of said members being in facing relation when in their retracted positions, the lower edges of said innermost walls being in adjacent relation when the members are inl their projected positions, hinged means attached' to said innermost walls for limiting the outward movement of said members to predetermined projected positions, and connecting means attached to the bases of said members, the bottom wall of the casing containing an aperture underlying the said lower edges of said innermost walls when in their retracted positions, whereby entryV may be made therethrough to engage said connecting means for pushing said members outwardly to said projected positions.
