Tobacco related article packaging and method of manufacturing the same

The present invention relates to a package for a tobacco related article having at least one compartment for containing a tobacco related article. The invention also relates to a method of making a package for one of the tobacco related articles.

Tobacco-related articles, preferably smoking articles such as cigarettes or cigarillos, are typically contained in disposable packages having a substantially rectangular or parallelepiped shape. One common type of cigarette package is a hinged lid package. This type of package includes a front wall and a rear wall and a pair of smaller longitudinal side walls. The walls of the package project substantially perpendicularly from a bottom wall and surround a compartment to contain a smoking article. Opposite the bottom wall, there is an access opening on the top side of the package through which the smoking article can be accessed. The access opening is covered by a cover hinged to the back wall.

A variety of different packagings are known, ranging from flexible packaging to classic cigarette or cigar boxes. Packaging for tobacco related articles that deviate from the classic hinged lid design described above is becoming more and more popular, for example, having a package for holding a plurality of containers or boxes of smoking articles.

In document WO 2010/060829 there is a package with one of three separate compartments. A common plane holds three containers side by side. When the package is opened, the plane is placed on the back side of the container. The package is foldable along a plurality of hinge lines on the back side plane and when the package is folded, the plane forms an outer surface of the package.

Another multi-compartment package is disclosed in US 5,344,008. The cigarette package includes a plurality of boxes that are joined together using a joining component. A separate member such as a book cover or a book adhesive is used to secure a separate book.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method for packaging and manufacturing one of the tobacco-related articles for packaging of one of the tobacco-related articles.

In one aspect of the invention, a package is provided that includes at least one compartment for containing tobacco related articles. The tobacco related article may be a smoking article such as a cigarette or a cigar. The package further includes a frame. In particular, the frame can be a rigid component. The frame can be made using a synthetic material such as PP (polypropylene) or ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer). However, any other suitable material may be used to make the frame. The at least one compartment is hinged to the frame by a hinge and the package can be opened and closed by rotating the compartment around the hinge. The frame at least partially surrounds the compartment when the package is in a closed state.

The frame may advantageously have the same width as the compartment (e.g., the side walls of the compartment). However, in other embodiments, the frame may be narrower than the compartment (eg, the side walls of the compartment) or wider than the compartment (eg, the side walls of the compartment).

Advantageously, the frame acts as a protective component for the package and the smoking article contained in the compartment. Because the frame at least partially surrounds the compartment, smoking items within the package will not be damaged. A durable package can be provided that maintains an attractive visual appearance even after frequent use over a long period of time.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the at least one compartment comprises a bottom wall, a front wall, a rear wall, a first side wall and a second side wall. The front and rear walls are opposite each other with respect to the interior of one of the compartments. Similarly, the first side wall and the second side wall oppose each other with respect to the interior of the compartment. The compartment may have a substantially parallelepiped or cuboid shape. However, the shape of the compartment is not limited to these shapes. For example, the compartment can be configured to have a sloping edge or Rounded edges. If the edges are beveled, one of the compartments may have a substantially octagonal cross section.

There may be an access opening providing access to the compartment. The access opening can be configured to oppose the bottom wall. According to this embodiment, in the closed state of the package, the frame at least partially covers (advantageously completely covers) the access opening. In one of the open states of the package, the frame is rotated away from the access opening such that the contents of the compartment are accessible. In a preferred embodiment, the frame at least partially covers (advantageously completely covers) the lower wall of the compartment when the package is in a closed state: the bottom wall, the first side wall and the second side wall. The walls (i.e., advantageously the aforementioned walls) and access openings may be completely covered by the frame.

In another advantageous aspect of the invention, the package includes a first compartment and a second compartment. The first compartment and the second compartment may each include a bottom wall, a front wall, a rear wall, a first side wall and a second side wall. The walls of the compartment may protrude substantially perpendicularly from the bottom wall. The front and rear walls are opposite each other with respect to one of the interiors of the package. Similarly, the first side wall and the second side wall oppose each other with respect to the interior of the package. The front and rear wall systems are substantially parallel to each other. The first side wall and the second side wall are also substantially parallel to each other. The first compartment and the second compartment may have a substantially parallelepiped or cuboid shape. The front and rear walls may be the broad surface of the cuboid, and the side walls may be small surfaces of the cuboid. In particular, the side walls are smaller when compared to the front and rear walls and if considered in a plane substantially parallel to one of the bottom walls. Opposite the bottom wall, the first compartment and the second compartment each include an access opening for providing access to the compartment.

According to one aspect of the invention, there may be a gap between the first hinge and the second hinge. The gap may have a width corresponding to twice the width of the first side wall or the second side wall. The gap may also have a width corresponding to the sum of the widths of the first compartment and the second compartment.

The gap may also be larger than the combined width of the first and second compartments to provide an additional space between the two compartments. This extra space can then be used to accommodate advertising or other assets. For example, in the form of a piece of folded paper. It is even possible to provide an additional small compartment or box between the two compartments. This compartment may contain promotional or other informational materials.

When the package is in a closed state, the frame can then at least partially (or completely) cover the bottom wall, the first side wall, the second side wall, and the access openings of the first and second compartments.

The bottom, front, rear, first and/or second side walls of the first compartment and/or the second compartment may be fabricated from a rigid or semi-rigid material, such as from a card or cardboard material.

Multi-compartment packaging according to the prior art is generally attributed to the lack of durability due to the detachment of its individual compartment into the remainder of the package. In addition, the provision of several compartments often results in the package becoming relatively fragile, which means that the package is quickly worn when it is used.

The package according to the aspect of the invention overcomes these disadvantages. Provides an easy-to-control, rugged package. A frame surrounding the first and second compartments serves as a protective component for the package and smoking article. Preferably, the frame is fabricated using four substantially flat strips, namely a front strip, a back strip, a top strip and a bottom strip. The four strips of the frame at least partially cover the side walls, the bottom wall and the access opening of the at least one package. If the package includes a first compartment and a second compartment, the four strips of the frame will at least partially cover the side walls, the bottom wall and the access opening of the first compartment and the second compartment. When the package (of the two compartments) is in the closed state, the front strip can be configured to cover the (several) first side walls. The back strip can be configured to cover the (several) second side wall when the package is in the closed state. The bottom strip of the frame is configured to cover the bottom wall of the at least one compartment when the package (when the two compartments) are closed. Advantageously, the front strip of the frame comprises at least one recess. In particular, the front strip can include a first recess and a second recess, which can be further configured to oppose each other. The at least one compartment front wall may include a projection that is preferably used to open one of the compartment handles and protrude into the recess. In particular, there may be a first fold line providing a first hinge between the front wall and the intermediate wall of the first compartment. A second fold line providing one of the second hinges can be disposed between the front wall and the intermediate wall of the second compartment. The interconnect plane can be fabricated from a rigid or semi-rigid material, such as a self-carding or cardboard material.

According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the intermediate wall of the interconnecting plane is fixed to the frame. In particular, the intermediate wall can be fixed to the inner surface of one of the strips behind the frame.

According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the first hinge is arranged along an edge between the front wall of the first compartment and the first or second side wall. Preferably, the second hinge is disposed along an edge between the front wall of the second compartment and the first side wall or the second side wall. The hinges are disposed on the edge of the package and/or near the edge of the package.

According to another embodiment of the invention, the first compartment rear wall and the second compartment rear wall face each other if the package is closed. Correspondingly, the front wall of the first compartment is one of the front side walls of the package and the front wall of the second compartment is one of the rear side walls of the package.

According to another aspect of the invention, a method of making a package for a tobacco related article is provided. A package for containing a first compartment and a second compartment for containing tobacco related articles is manufactured. A front wall of one of the first compartments and a front wall of one of the second compartments form a portion of an interconnecting plane. The plane further includes an intermediate wall interconnecting the front wall of the first compartment and the front wall of the second compartment. The intermediate wall is fixed to a frame. In particular, the frame includes four strips and the intermediate wall is connected to one of the inner sides of one of the four strips. One inner side is the side facing the inside of the frame. By connecting the intermediate wall to the frame, a hinged connection between the first compartment and the frame and between the second compartment and the frame can be provided. The package can be opened or closed by rotating the first compartment about the first hinge and rotating the second compartment about the second hinge.

Advantageously, on the one hand, the frame can be produced together with the first and second compartments together with the intermediate wall, and on the other hand the frame can be produced separately. This is advantageous because the two parts can be made from different materials. The frame can be fabricated from a synthetic material. The first compartment and the second compartment can be fabricated using a card or cardboard material. The two prefabricated parts are combined in a subsequent production step. The package 2 can be opened or closed by rotating the first compartment 6 around the first hinge H1 and/or rotating the second compartment 8 around the second hinge H2. The two compartments 6, 8 can be individually opened and closed to provide access to either of the first compartment 6 and the second compartment 8.

The first compartment 6 and the second compartment 8 each include a front wall F1, F2, a rear wall R1, R2, a first side wall S1, S2, a second side wall S3, S4, and a bottom wall B1. B2. The four strips of frame 4 (i.e., front strip 16, rear strip 18, top strip 20, and bottom strip 22) may include beveled edges 30 adjacent the outer border of frame 4. Furthermore, the frame 4 can be reinforced by connecting the four strips 16, 18, 20, 22 by the reinforcing member 36. Another simplified perspective view of one of the prefabricated portions of the package 2 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIG. The interconnect plane 40 further includes an intermediate wall 42 that connects the front wall F1 of the first compartment 6 and the front wall F2 of the second compartment 8. The interconnect plane 40 includes an integral portion of the front walls F1, F2 and the intermediate wall 42. The first compartment 6 and the second compartment 8 can be prefabricated components that are then attached to the interconnect plane 40. This is advantageous for the manufacture of the package 2.

Further, the interconnect plane 40 can be fabricated from a first portion including one of the first compartments 6 and a second portion including the second compartments 8. One of the front side walls F1 of the first compartment 6 can extend across the compartment 6 to provide at least a portion of the intermediate wall 42. Similarly, the front side wall F2 of the second compartment 8 can extend across the compartment 8 to provide at least a portion of the intermediate wall 42. To manufacture the package 2 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, one of the rear side surfaces 44 of the intermediate wall 42 can be secured to one of the inner surfaces of the strip 18 after the frame 4. One of the inner surfaces of the rear strip 18 is a surface facing the inside of the frame 4. The intermediate wall 42 can be secured to the back strip 18 using a suitable adhesive.

Further, the first compartment 6 rear wall R1 and the second compartment 8 rear wall R2 may have fixing members 46 for fixing the first compartment 6 and the second compartment 8 in their closed positions. For example, the securing member 46 can be an antagonistic magnet that applies a gravitational force to each other when the package 2 is closed. The fixing member 46 can be an adhesive (slip tape) or an opposite portion of the point at which the adhesive can be released.

Figure 8 is a simplified perspective view showing a package 2 in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention. The package 2 can be configured similarly to the package 2 according to the embodiment of Figures 1 to 7, however, the package 2 comprises a single compartment 70 that is hinged to the frame 4 via a hinge H. To open and close the package 2, the compartment 70 is rotated about the hinge H. The compartment 70 includes a front wall F7 and a rear wall R7 that are substantially perpendicular to each other and project substantially perpendicularly from a bottom wall B7. The front wall F7 and the rear wall R7 oppose each other with respect to the inside of one of the compartments 70. Similarly, a first side wall S7 and a second side wall S8 are substantially parallel to each other and protrude substantially perpendicularly from the bottom wall B7. The side walls S7, S8 oppose each other with respect to the internal space of the compartment 70.

The frame 4 includes four substantially flat strips: a front strip 16, a rear strip 18, a top strip 20, and a bottom strip 22. The front strip 16 covers the first side wall S7, the rear strip 18 covers the second side wall S8, the top strip 20 covers an access opening 12 and the bottom strip 22 covers the bottom wall B7. The access opening is for accessing tobacco related items, such as cigarettes 10, disposed in compartment 70.
