I. M. FULLER.
Plate Scraper.
'No. 237,681. Patented Feb. 15,1881.
FIGS. FIG.4. F1G.5-
IHVENTOIL NITED STATES ATEN'I FFicE.
PLATE-SCRAPE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,681, dated February 15, 1881.
' Application filed April 7, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRENE M. FULLER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plate-Scrapers,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device for the more rapid, thorough, and noiseless scraping of dishes previous to their being washed.
Heretofore all substances, of whatever kind, adhering to plates or dishes after being used on the table have been removed, previous to their being washed, by means of scraping with an ordinary table-knife, which is a slow, laborious, and noisy operation.
My invention removes these objections by means of a scraper having a flexible blade, as hereinafter fully explained.
Figure l is a side view of elevation, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view at t 2. Figs. 3, 4, 5 are sectional views at t 2, showing modifications of my invention, as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings like letters indicate like parts.
D is a handle, made of wood, metal, or any suitable material, of which A is an extension forming the base or back, to which is attached the rubber or flexible blade B, by means of screws, nails, or rivets O O O O, as shown.
The dotted lines F, Figs. 1 and 2, show an enlargement of the flexible blade at that point, for the purpose of more readily conforming to the inequalities peculiar to the shapes of different dishes, and also enabling a person using the same to apply more strength or pressure in removing from the plates or dishes such substances as a lighter blade with necessarily 0 lighter pressure would not effect.
The dotted lines at E, Fig. 1, show a small metal blade, for the purpose of loosening very hard substances from the plate or dish before using the rubber or flexible blade B; but my improvement may be made with or without said blade E, as desired.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of my invention, by which it will be seen that the flexible blade B has a hole or holes running longitudinally, in which the back or part A is inserted.
Fig. 4 is a modification showing the back A with flexible blade B fastened on one side by means of nails, screws, or rivets G, as shown.
Fig. 5 is also a modification of myinvention, but more suitably adapted to metal handles, the sides X X clamping the rubber or flexible blade B, thus holding it fast, and the rib 0 extending down for the purpose of stiffening the said flexible blade B; but said rib 0 may be dispensed with, if necessary or desirable.
It will be readily seen that with the use of a flexible-bladed knife or scraper, as above described, owing to the flexible nature of the blade, the dishes will be scraped more easily, rapidly, and thoroughly than by any process heretofore ever used.
I do not confine myself to the use of pure rubber, but may use any grade of that article for the manufacture of the flexible blade B, whether the same be mixed with fiber or any other material known to the trade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the rubber or its equivalent flexible blade B with the back A and handle D, as described and above set forth.
IRENE M. FULLER.
