Description

May 8, 1945. J. PEZZANO GOMBINATION'WARDROBE AND CABINET Filed May 18, 1944 INVENTOR. cfosepfi P8220270 ATTORNEY UN-ITEDS Patented May 8 1945 PAT:
COMBINATION WARDROBE AND CABINET Joseph Pezzano, Staten Island, N. Application May 18, 1944, SerialNo. 536,105
2Claims. (01. 312-151) This'invention relates to articles of furniture, and more particularly to wardrobes, cabinets, or the like, and aims to provide improvements whereby a movable cabinet or the lik is mounted in a wardrobe or the like and means are provided whereby the cabinet may be lowered to a readily accessible position near or at the floor. Thus, instead of requiring a ladder on which to mount in order to be able to examine and handle the contents of the cabinet, the latter when brought down near the floor is as accessible as the ward robe compartments themselves. r
The above and other objects will become ap parent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts on the accompanying drawing. It is to be.
noted that the drawing is intended for the purpose of illustration only, and it is neither intended nor desired to limit the invention necessarily to the exact details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a wardrobe having the upper drawer or cabinet removably mounted in accordance with the present inven- 1 tion.
24. A slot extends through the-yoke and communicates with a vertical slot 26 in the forward leg2|. It likewise communicates with a similar slot in the rear leg 2|, shown at 21. At the common points between the slots 26 and 21 with the slot 25, the slots are naturally rounded, substantially as shown.
The cabinet or drawer 28, which is adapted to register inthe space between the walls I4 and I6, has spaced rollers 29 extending in a horizontal alignment from the upper edges of the side walls thereof, the distance between the rollers 29 on each side of the drawer 28 being equal to the horizontal distance between the leg slots 26 and 27; It is thus apparent that when the cabi- .net 28 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the rollers 29 will be positioned just rearward of the adjacent vertical slots 26 and 21, so that the cabinet 28 will remain supported by the yoke 23.
Intermediate each yoke 23 a pulley 3|) is mounted. A counterweight 3| is supported at both ends by strings 32, cables, or the like, which pass first over fixed pulleys 30a on the side walls Fig. 21 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is across-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. 9
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l0 indicates awardrobe having the hinged side doors I onthe innersurfaces of which mir-:
rors |2 may be provided. A frame comprising the side walls |3' and the top wall I4 is mounted within the wardrobe, with the side walls l3 spaced from the wardrobe side walls l5 and the top wall I4 spaced at a substantial distance from the wardrobe roof I6. Of course there may be any desired arrangement of drawers or compartments within the frame |3-|4, but as shown a clothes compartment I1 is provided on oneside, separated by a partition 9 from a plurality of drawers I8,
On the outside of each wall l3 and between the same and. the adjacent wall l5, an inverted U-shaped upright frame is removably mounted.
This frame 20 comprises a pair of legs 2| mounted on rollers 22 and the yoke 23 joining the tops of the legs, the yoke being extended rearward as at I5 and then over the pulleys 30 and are attached to the side walls of the cabinet 28.
Assuming that'the cabinet 28 is in the home position shown in Fig. 2, to bring it forward out of the wardrobe and down to a position near the floor, the frames 20 are pulled forward, and to facilitate this operation chains 33 may be hung from projections 34 on the legs 2| at the front. Limit stops, not shown, may be provided to pre vent the frames from being moved forward a greater distance than necessary, that is, than the position shown in broke lines in Fig. 2. When thus pulled out of the wardrobe, the cabinet 28 may be moved forward until the rollers 29 register above their respective slots 26 and 21 in the legs, whence slight pressure on the cabinet will cause it to descend against the force ofthe counterweight 3|. Thus the cabinet will be held in any vertical position between the limits of the slots 26 and 21. After the cabinet 28 has been used, it is again raised to the top of the slots 26 and 21 and pushed back on the yokes 23, then the frames 20 v are pushed back home into the wardrobe. 1
, Obviously, modifications in form andstructure may be made without departing from the spirit 1 andscope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In combination with awardrobe or other article of furniture having a space below the roof thereof, a cabinet or the like registrable in said space, said wardrobe having a space oneach said cabinet having spaced rollers extending from 10 the sides thereof, the distance between said rollers on each side of said cabinet being equal to the distance between said vertical slots of each of said frames.
2. The device set forth in claim 1, having a counterweight at the back of the wardrobe, pulleys on said yokes, additional pulleys on the sides of the wardrobe, and cables or the like secured to said counterweight and to said cabinet and trained about said pulleys.
