JOHN vlDETTA, OF 'WEEHAWKEN, NEW JERSEY.
KITCHEN CABINET.
Application filed July 1,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VmE'rrA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Weehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in kitchen cabinets.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cabinet which is especially adapted for use in small kitchens such as those found in apartment houses or bungalows.
A further object of the invention is to provide a kitchen cabinet with an extension table which may be housed within the cabinet when not in use for the purpose of saving space in the kitchen.
A still further object of the invention 1s to provide an extension table for a kitchencabinet with improved means for connecting the various table sections for permitting them to be withdrawn from the cabinet, one section at a time, for making different sized tables.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will beapparent during the course of the following description'.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed for designating like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the cabinet embodying this invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view -of the cabinet illustrated in Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the cabinet illustrated in Figs. -1 and 2 with the table sections extended orwithdrawn from the cabinet,
Figure 4 is a vertical.v sectional view of the lower portion of the cabinet and shows the table sections housed therewithin,
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of portions of the cabinet and illustrates the table sections in elevation extended. from the cabinet,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a portion of the cabinet and further .illustrates one table section housed .1924. Serial No.. 723,497.
therewithin and one table section extended from the cabinet,
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the table sections extended or withdrawn from the cabinet,
Figure 8 is a fragmentary, vertical sectional view, partly brokeny away, of the lower portion of the cabinet with the table sections housed therewithin, taken upon lines VIII-VIII of Fi 4.-,
Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective View, partly broken away, of one portion of the inner table section,
.Figure 10 is a fragmentary perspective view of adjacent corners of the table sections and illustrates the manner of connecting the outer section to the le supporting the outer longitudinal edge of Se inner table section,
Figure 11 is a fragmentary sectional view for showing the means employed for connecting the outer table section to the legs of the inner table section, and
Figure 12 is a fragmentary view showing means for holding the flexible doors in their adjusted positions.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates the lower portion of the kitchen cabinet embodying this invention while the numeral 6 designates the upper portion of the kitchen cabinet. The lower portion includes the sides 7 which are provided with rear legs v8 and front legs 9, a back wall 10, and a top 11. In Fig. 4f, this lower portion of thecabinet is further illustrated as being provided with a bottom wall 12 and a front wall 13, the said front wall being provided with a plurality of different sized openings 14 which permit the placing of articles uponthe shelves 15 which may be arranged in any desired manner. Extending alono' the outer faces of the bottom and front wals 12 and 13 and positioned against the side walls 7 are guideways-16 which'are employed for housing the ends of the connected strips employed for forming the flexible door 17 which slides within the guideways 16 andis of the type commonly used for roll top desks. It will be seen that this iiexible door may be employed for closing the openings 14 formed in the front wall 13 for concealing articles placed upon the shelves 15. vrlhis lower section 5 is 'further provided with a sub-top'll whichV is positioned in spaced relation to the top 11 for forming a compartment 18 within which 'the tops of the table sections, to be described at a later point, may be housed.
The upper portion 6 of the kitchen cabinet includes a bottom wall 19 which is suitably secured to the top 11 of the lower section 5, a back wall 20, top wall 21, and a skeleton front wall 22, the skeleton front wall form ing a plurality of different sized openings 23 which are employed for permitting articles to be placed upon the shelves 24. "This upper cabinet section 6 is also provided with a iiexible door or cover 25 having its longitudinal edges slidably received within the guides 26. It will be understood that this iexible door or cover 25 ma be employed for closing the openings 23 ormed in the front wall 22 for concealing the articles placed upon the shelves 24. The top section is further provided with a hinged door 26a having a panel mirror 26 carried thereby, in
the manner best illustrated in Fig. 1.
`ISIS The sectional table adapted to be housed within the compartment 18 includes any inner section having a top 27 which is provided at its inner corners with depending pins 28 which are intended to rest upon the forwardly, downwardly sloping tracks 29, the said pins 28 and tracks 29 being emloyed for raising and lowering the rear ongitudinal edge of the top 27. Secured to the side edges of this table top 27 in proximity to the beveled front longitudinal edge 30 are the legs 31 which are provided, in their outer faces, with inclined, transversely extending grooves 32 which are adapted to receive pins 33 projecting inwardly from the inner faces of the front legs 9 of the bottom cabinet section 5. These pins and grooves are employed for raising and lowering the legs 31 when they are being moved into or withdrawn from the lower cabinet section 5 for the purpose of retaining the front longitudinal edge of the cabinet approximately on the lsame plane as the rear longitudinal edge which carries the depending pins 28. v
The outer table section includes the top 34 which is provided with front legs 35 having a cross brace 36 adjacent their lower j ends and a cross board 37 adjacent the table top 34, the cross board 37 being provided with` a longitudinally extending slot 38 which receives a cutting board 39 that is carried by the spaced, depending, L-shaped guides 40 which are carried by the front table top 34, the said cutting board 39 be'- ing adapted to be withdrawn either when lthe outer section is housed within the cabirear longitudinal edge of this front table to 34 is beveled, as at 41, for corresponding with the beveled edge 30 ot the rear table section 27 when the said sections are both extended and arranged in a manner'illustrat'- ed in Figs. 3, 5, 7 'and 10. 'Ihis rear edge 41 is also provided, adjacent the side edges, with depending hook-shaped elements 42 which are adapted for receiving pins 43 carried by the front longitudinal edge of the .inner section 27 when the said sections are being withdrawn from the cabinet, the said hook-shaped elements 42 being moved into engagement with the pins 43 after the front table section has been withdrawn from the cabinet for causing further movement of the front section to withdraw -the rear section from the cabinet. After the Jfront-section has been withdrawn and also the rear section, the beveled edges 30 and 41' may be moved into engagement with each other and the spring pressed plungers 44, best illustrated in Fig. 11, may be positioned within recesses formed in the side edges of the outer table top 34 adjacent the beveled edge 41 for causing the legs 31 to support this inner bevelededge 41 of the outer table top 34. ln Figs. 5, 6 and 10, the legs 31 are further illustrated as being provided with inA wardly projecting tracks 45 which are employed for supporting the depending hookshaped elements 42 carried by the rear edge if the table top 34 when the pins 44 are not received within the recesses formed in the said table top 34 for the `purpose of supporting .the rear edge of this latter table llt is now believed that the construction and operation of this kitchen cabinet with its extension table will be understood from the above detail description. 1t might be well to note, however, that when the extension table is entirely housed within the lower portion 5 of the kitchen cabinet, the front section may be first withdrawn from the cabinet, as illustrated in Fig. 6. This table top 34 will. be supported at its front edge by the legs 35 and at the rear edge by the hook-shaped elements 42 resting upon the tracks 45. Further movement of the outer section will cause the hook-shaped elements 42 to engage the pins 43 for withdrawing the inner section from the cabinet. This outward movement of the inner section will cause the pins 33, carried by the front legs 9 o the cabinet. to lower the legs 31 of the inner section for causing the same to rest upon the oor. The rear longitudinal edge of the inner table top 27 will, also be lowered to the level of the outer table top 34 by means of the pins 28 riding upon the tracks 29. After the table tops 27 and 34 have been withdrawn from the cabinet,`the beveled edges 30 and 41 of'the two table net or when it is extended therefrom. The tops may be moved into engagement and the spring pressed plungers .44- positioned :for f being received wlthinithe recesses formed in the outer table top' 34. It will then be seen that the adjacent edges of the tops will be vsemble door 17. The..
secured to the legs 31. d
In Fig. 12 there is shown one corner of the end strip 17 of this door is hollow for receiving the rods 17 which have connected to their adjacent ends the knobs -a- .bv means of which, the spring pressed shoes b-f `may be moved away from the guides l16 for permitting sliding ofthe door. Y
Itis'to befunderstoodthat the form of this invention herewith shown and described a sub-top spaced therefrom to form a chamber, and side walls having front and rear I. legs; a rearwardly inclined track carried b i, the upper inner portion of each side wal v :su
within the chamber, an extension table section including a ton and two front legs, a Y pin depending from each rear corner of the top and traveling on said inclinedtracks to raise and lower the inner edge of the table when it is pushed into and pulled out of the chamber, and 4said front legs on the extension table and cabinet section having means for interconnecting the same to raise and lower the front edge of the table whenv it is pushed into and pulled out of the cham- 2. In a piece of furniture of the type described, a cabinet section including a top,
a sub-top spaced therefrom to form a chamber, and side walls having front and rear legs; a rearwardly inclined track carried by the upper inner portion of leach side wall within vthefchambem an 'extension table section including a ton and two front legs, a
pin dependin from each rear corner ofthe top and trave 'ng on said inclined tracks to raise and lower the inner edge of the table when it is pushed into and pulled out of the' chamber, said front legs on the extension table and cabinet section having means for interconnecting the same to raise and lower the front edge of the table when it is pushed into and pulled 'out of the chamber,
a second table section having a top and' front legs, means for connecting thev adljacent edges, of the tops of the table sections when both are extended, and means for guiding the topv of the second table section into the chamber beneath the top of the first table section when both sections are pushed into the chamber.
t In testimony whereof I alix my 'signa-- ure.
-JOHN VIDETTA.
