UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ABBAM OWEN, OF TEXANA, TEXAS.V
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 237,314, dated February 1, 1881. Application filed September 13, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM OWEN, a citizen ot' the United States, resident at Teka-na, in the county of Jackson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, sueltas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to buckles; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a view, in perspective, ot' a buckle embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinalsectional view, showing the straps connected with the buckle; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation ofthe buckle.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the concave upper portion of the bucklef'rame, and B designates `the shorter convex lower portion of the frame.`
G designates a fiat and comparatively wide centrally-located cross-bar. This cross-bar O is provided on its upper face, near the righthand edge, at the middle of the bar, with a vertical stud, E, having an oblong head, F. On its under face, at the left-hand edge, is a similar stud and head, G G', pointing the reverse ofl the stud and-head E F.
It will be observed that my buckle is constructed mainly of two frames united together at their centers, the upper frame being long and the lower one relatively short. This method of' construction furnishes large spaces or loops at each end of the buckle, to provide f'or easy insertion of the ends of straps when the operators hands are cold, or in the dark, the upper and lower cross-bars of the ends ot' the frames serving as guides for that purpose.
The strap H that carries the buckle is slit or perforated near its end, and is passed between the portions A and B of the buckleframe down under the portion B, and is slipped over the lower stud, G G. The strap I is passed under the upper portion of the frame, between the portions A and B, at the opposite end of the frame, and its perforation slipped over the headed stud E F, after which its projecting end is passed underthe end ot' the frame over the strap H, said end ofthe frame serving as a loop to hold it in pla-ce.
In this construction ot buckle no stitching is necessary to secure it to the straps, and no tongue is required for the saine, as the headed studs answer for both stitching and tongue when used in connection with the frame A B. The portion B is made shorter than the portion A, in order to facilitate theintroduction ot' the straps to the studs and to give greater elasticity to the straps at the point where-the buckle is used.
The entire buckle can be cheaply and easily cast, as no tongue is required, and furnish a great saving in this, that no stitching is required.
Heretofore in double buckles both portions have had their loops of the same length. By this construction it is exceedingly difficult to insert a strap after another is in place, es`- pecially so in the dark, or when the hands are numbed with cold. By making one portion longer than the other the entrance of' the second strap is facilitated, the other strap and the extended loop forming guides.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The buckle, as described, having frames A and B, united together, as shown, the frameA being long and frame B relatively short, the fiat cross-bar C, lprovided on opposite sides with the buttons G and E, having the heads G and F', substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix Vmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABBAM OWEN. Witnesses:
R. L. SIMMONS, W. A. BECKHAM.
