tratrix of said Thomas F. Halloran, deceased t Application December 1, 1943, Serial No. 512,500
- 7 Claims. ('Cl. 131-185) 'I'his invention relates to a safety' non-glow cigarette or cigar shield, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will prevent light from a burning cigarette or cigar from being observed and the scattering or falling of sparks or ashes therefrom, consequently a person employing the device may smoke within blackout areas and also where there is fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a safety non-glow cigarette or cigar shield including a mouth piece constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is an end view of the device showing the draft openings.y
Fig-ure 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a modified form of my invention.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the lzne 5-5 ofFigure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical ysectional view illustrating another modified form of my invention.
Figure 7 is an end View illustrating one of the plates employed in the form oi' my invention shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is an end view showing another plate employed in the construction of the modified form of my invention shown in Figure 6.
Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the connection "between the match holding jaws and also showing the pivotal connection of the jaws to the slide.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a substantially tubular shaped lireproof casing, one end of which is internally thickened, as shown at 6, and provided with an opening for removably receivinga mouth piece or bit 'I provided with 'a spiral thread 8 to engage with a correspondingly shaped thread formed in the wall of the opening whereby the mouth piece or bit can be easily and quickly attached and detached from the casing for the purpose of permitting a cigarette to be adapted to the mouth piece or bit and then arranged within the casing,
as shownin Figure 1. It is to be understood that the mouthpiece or bit can be constructed or shaped to receive a cigar for arrangement in the casing 5 so that the device is adaptable to either a danger of creating nre from sparks or hot ashes.
cigarette or cigar. The other end of the casing 5 has a concavo convex end wall 9 in which is formed a plurality of vent passages Ill grouped in annular formation and each of Va hook shaped formation arranging the inner end of the passage laterally of the outer end of the passage. 'I'he passages l0 thus formed will permit a free iiow of air into the casing to'support the combustion or burning of the cigarette or cigar therein, and still will conceal from view the light from the burning cigarette or cigar.
The lower wall of tne casing 5 adjacent the end wall 9 is provided with a discharge opening Il through which the ashes may spill when said opening is uncovered. The opening is preferably of elongated formation and opposite walls thereof are provided with beads l2 to be slidably engaged by curved flanges i3 formed on a cover Il equipped with a finger piece I5. Normally, the cover Il closes the opening Il to prevent the escape of sparks or ashes through the opening I I. Also the passages I0 being of the shape specified will prevent the ashes or sparks from escaping V.from the casing I. lHowever, when it is desired to empty the casing of ashes, the cover is slid rearwardly uncovering the opening Il so that the ashes may gravitate readily from the casing. The flanges I3 have edges curved outwardly from each other to facilitate snapping of said flanges oli' and on the beads -Iz when desiring to remove and replace the cover on the case.
A supporting bar I6 is arranged in the casing 5 transversely of the latter and in close proximity to the end of a cigarette or cigar arranged in the casing prior to the latter being ignited, and has mounted thereon a scratch plate I1 for the purpose of igniting a match I 8 carried by jaws I9 pivotally mounted on the cover and yieldably connected by a spring 20, The jaws support the match in a position of contacting the scratch plate Il when the cover is moved into a position of closing the opening II so that the burning match may ignite the cigar or cigarette. The jaws being yieldably connected permits the match stem to be easily applied and removed from the cover, this being easily accomplished when the cover is in an open position the opening being large enough to permit the match to be easily placed in or removed from the jaws.
Thus it will be seen that avery eillcient shield has been provided for a cigarette or cigar while being smoked and that it will efllciently hide from view the burning of the cigarette or cigar and that the ashes or sparks will be prevented from moved from the device and at that time a match arranged so that on the closing of the cover of the casing the match will be ignited for the purpose of lighting the cigar or cigarette thereafter arranged within the casing.
Referring to my modified form of the invention as shown in Figures 4 and 5, it will be seen that the casing 2| is substantially ot the same oonstruction as the construction of the casing 5 and that the mouth piece 'l is ,removed so that in the use of the device the smoker may place the cigar or cigarette directly in the mouth for smoking 26 extending through the slot 23 and terminating in nger pieces 31. Movement of the finger pieces in the direction of each other as indicated bythe arrows in Figure 5 will bring about expansion of the annular portion 25 of the clamp 24 so that the cigar or cigarette may be passed freely therethrough. As soon as the ilngervpieces are released the annular portion contracts on the cigar or cigarette and with the end portions extending through the slot 23 of the casing, the cigar or cigarette will be rmly clamped and supported in the casing along with the additional support received from the spring fingers 22.
Referring to my modied form of the invention as shown in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive, the casing 28 is provided with a concavo convex end wall 29 provided with a vent opening 30 arranged axially of the casing 28 to vent said casing. Arranged within the casing 28 and spaced from each other are concave convex baille plates 3l and 32. The baiile plate 3l has an opening 33 aligning with the opening 30 while the baiile plate 32 is provided with a series of cutouts 34 arranged laterally of the openings 33 and 30. The baille plates may frictionally engage the walls of the casing 28 and thereby be retained within the casing adjacent the opening 30 and are spaced a limited distance from each other so that air may readily enter the casing to support the burning of the cigar or cigarette therein, and still prevent the light from the burning cigar or cigarette from being seen exteriorly of the casing.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1.
