"This invention relates to cigar andcigarette holders, and has for one of its'objects the production of a simple and efficient means for entirely enclosing a smoking article such as a cigar and cigarette, within a casing, thereby protecting the smoking article as well as other objects which may be adjacent thereto. A further object of this invention is the production of a cigar and cigarette holder which comprises an apertured casing to permit a draft to pass through the holder, and includes means for-closing the apertures in the casing to eXtinguish the smoking article by cutting off the draft, so that the holder may be carried in a pocket without the possibility of burning the clothing, and at the same time preserve the smoking artitile for subsequent relighting, and thereby prevent waste.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the cigar and cigarette holder constructed in accordance with my invention;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the holder showing the inner and outer casings in a partly open position without the conventional mouthpiece;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of the inner and outer casings.

By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that It} designates the conventional mouth-piece which is provided with a socket H into which the inner end I2 of the inner tubular casing I3 is adapted to fit. The inner casing I3 is provided with an aperture I4 through which aperture I4 the inner end of a cigarette or cigar I5 is adapted to extend, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The cigarette or cigar also is adapted to extend into the cigarette or cigar receiving socket in the mouth-piece It), as shown in Figure 2. The casing I3 is in the nature of a tube having longitudinally extending radially spaced vent slots I6. An enlarged cigarette receiving slot I1 is formed in the inner casing I3, upon one side thereof, as shown in Figure 4. A bayonet slot I8 also is formed in the inner casing I3 and comprises a longitudinally extending portion terminating in a transverse portion I9 at the inner end of the casing I3.

An outer tubular casing 29 is slidably mounted upon the inner casing I3 and is provided. with an outer closed end '21. The outer casing 213 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending radially spaced vent slots 22' which are adapted to register with the slots" l6 and IT formed in the inner casing 13. A retaining pin 23 is carried bythe outer casing 2-3 and extends into the bayonet slot'Ifl of the inner casing I3.

The outercasing '20 is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the casing I3, which casing I3 telescopes into the outercasing 20, as shown in Figure 4. The outer casing 20 is adapted-to be moved to an extended position relative to the inner casing I3 for a distance sufiicient to permit a cigarette or cigar to be dropped through the slot I1 into the inner casing I3; One end of the cigarette I5 is then extended through the aperture I4, as shown in Figure 4. The outer casing 26 is then closed over the inner casing I3 by moving the casing 2 0 longitudinally of the casing I'3. The casing 20 is then rotated upon the casing I3. The pin 23 slides from the longitudinal portion of the slot I8 into the transverse portion I9 of the bayonet slot I8 to lock the outer casing 29 against longitudinal movement upon the inner casing I3 until the casing 2i] is again rotated in the opposite direction to bring the pins 23 into registration with the longitudinal portion of the slot I8. The transverse portion I9 of the slot I8 is sufiiciently long to permit the outer casing 28 to be rotated upon th inner casingll to and from a position to move the slots 22 into and out of registration with the slots I 6 and I! of the inner casing I3 to open and When the slots are closed the holder will be rendered absolutely fire-proof.

When the outer casing 20 is moved to an extended position to fully open the slot I1, and the holder is held so as to position that portion of the inner casing I3 intermediate the vent slots I6 below the used cigarette, this intermediate portion will provide an ash-receiving means upon which ashes from the cigarette may drop until the ashes are dumped into an ash tray or the like.

When the casings I3 and 26 are used with the mouth-piece H), the outer casing 20 extends flush with the outer face of the mouth-piece ID, as shown in Figure 2. However, the device may be used in a manner to dispense with the mouthpiece Ill if desired, in which event one end of the cigarette I5 protrudes through the aperture I4,

By means of a device above described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a very simple and efiicient means has been provided whereby the cigarette may be extinguished owing to the deprivation of air and at the same time prevent ashes from falling through the apertures of the casing whereby the holder may be carried in the pocket of the user without possibility of damage to the clothing. 7

While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations there-. over may be made, and I, therefore, desire to reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction, orootherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts withoutv departing from the spirit of the inven tion or the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim as new is:

A holder for a smoking article comprising an I inner casing having a smoking article receiving aperture at one end thereof, said inner casing having an enlarged cigarette receiving slot upon one side thereof for facilitating the placing of a cigarette longitudinally of and within the inner casing and then into the aperture at one end of the inner casing, said inner casing also having longitudinally extending radially spaced vent slots, said inner casing having a bayonet slot formed therein and comprising a longitudinally extending portion terminating in a transverse portion at the inner end of the inner casing and terminating short of the opposite end of the casing, an outer tubular casing slidably mounted uponthe inner casing and provided with a closed outer end, said outer casing having longitudinally extending radially spaced vent slots adapted to be brought into registration with the vent slots of the inner casing, a pin fixed to and carried by the outer casing and slidably engaging said bayonet slot which is formed in said inner casing and holding the outer casing against accidental removal from said inner casing, the outer casing being rotatable for a limited distance upon the inner casing to open and close the vent slots, the inner casing having relatively wide portions intermediate the vent slots, the pin being movable in the transverse portion of the bayonet slot as the outer casing is rotated upon the inner casing; and the pin being movable longitudinally of the longitudinal portion or the bayonet slot as the outer casing is moved longitudinally of the inner casing, the longitudinal movement of the outer casing outwardly of the inner casing uncovering the enlarged cigarette receiving slot for substantially its entire length to provide for the removal of a cigarette from the inner casing by the fingers of a user, while the portion of the inner casing intermediate the vent slots thereof constitutes an ash receiving means should ashes drop from the cigarette while the used cigarette isbeing removed from the holder.
