This invention relates to smoking pipes and has for the primary object. the provision of means for closing the tobacco chamber or bowl so that sparks from the burning tobacco may not escape andset fire to inflammable material in the vicinity thereof and said means also providing a novel appearance to the device as well as a support for the igniter whereby the tobacco within the bowl may be easily lighted and thus eliminate the use of matches and thereby reduce fire hazards.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of constructions, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates an outer casing or housing of substantially conical shape having located in its reduced end a bit attaching head or member 2 provided with a screw threaded bore 3 in which may be threaded the usual bit or mouth piece 4. A bowl supporting member 5 abuts the bit attaching member 2 and is provided with communicative and offset bores 6 and 7. A connecting tube 8 is threaded in the bore 6 and the bore 3 thereby detachably connecting the portions 5 and 2 with the smoke passage.

located in the casing l with one end in abutting engagement with the member 5 and the bore 10 thereof communicates with the bore of a reduced screw threaded extension 11 threaded in the bore 7. A rib 12 isformed on the bowl or chamber and fits in a slot 13 of the casing 1. The enlarged end of the bowl or chamber 9 is spaced from the enlarged end of the casing and said casing between the enlarged end thereof and the enlarged end of the bowl or chamber is provided with a plurality of air openings 14. A perforated cover 15 is hinged to the enlarged end of the bowl or chamber to prevent the escape of burning tobacco therefrom into the casing and the enlarged end of the latter is closed by a hinged cover 16 further obviating the possibility of burning tobacco escaping from the device when in use.

The casing 1 is constructed of sections 1'7 and 18, the section 1'7 having the section 18 hinged thereto whereby the section 18 may form a cover which is preferably constructed of companion sections, as shown in Figures 1 and 3. One section of the cover carries a web 19 to support an igniter 20 within the casing. The igniter extends parallel with the bowl or chamber 9 with the wick end thereof located adjacent the mouth of the bore 10 of the bowl or chamber. The igniting wheel 21 of the igniter is located adjacent the wick and extends through a slot 22 in the casing whereby the igniter may be operated from the exterior of the casing without opening the latter. The filling and adjusting means of the igniter are located under the other section of the cover, as shown in Figure 3.

In use, tobacco may be readily placed in the bowl or chamber 9 by opening the covers 16 and 15 and after the filling of the bowl or chamber with tobacco, the latter may be ignited through the manipulation of the igniter 20 or the rotation of the igniting wheel 21 thereof. To allow the flame of the igniter to contact with the tobacco of the bowl or chamber, one wall thereof is perforated, as shown at 23. After the igniting of the tobacco the cover 16 may be closed, it being understood that the cover 15 having already been closed after the placing of the tobacco in the bowl or chamber and with the pipe smoked in this manner sparks are prevented from escaping from the device, whereby the device may be used with safety in the vicinity of inflammable material.
