Description
C IGARETTE HOLDER Original Filed Dec. 22, 1941 I u ventor By a m W W Patented Dec. 12, 1944 UNITED STATES... PATENT OFFICE.
Original application December 22, 1941, Serial No.
424,047. Divided and this application Novem- .ber 28, 1942, Serial No. 467,189
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders of the type forming the subject matter of my copending application, Serial No. 424,047, filed December 22, 1941, and of which the instant application is a division.
As explanatory, the cigarette holder disclosed in my copending application, supra, completely encloses the cigarette for safety and other purposes and parts must be detached preparatory to lighting a cigarette therein.
The principal object of the present invention is to obviate such detachment of parts in lighting a cigarette, expediting the lighting operation, and shielding the lighting flame during lighting so that it will not be blown out as by a draft or by the Wind. I
Other and subordinate objects will appear when the following description and claim are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the cigarette holder embodying my improvements,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the outer shell rotated to register the lighting openings, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary View in side elevation of the inner shell.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the type of cigarette holder with which my improvements are concerned comprises a mouth bit I having an enlarged outer cylindrical end 2 stepped down to provide a reduced intermediate shouldered portion 3 and a further reduced shouldered outer portion 4. The portions 3 and 4 are bored axially for the insertion of one end of a cigarette 5 therein with a friction fit. A draft counterbore 1 extends from the first-mentioned bore 6 to the mount end of the bit I.
An inner cylindrical shell 8 suitably perforated, as at 9, and having a closed outer end I0, is fitted at its inner end over the reduced portion 4 with a friction fit. A similar larger outer shell H is fitted at its inner end over the reduced portion 3. As will be understood, the innerand outer shells 8, H are of the requisite length to accommodate the portion of a cigarette 5 extending out of the bore 6. A cylindrical nut [2 extends outwardly through the closed ends ofthe inner and outer shells 8, ll into a rounded end guard l3 opposed to the closed end, of the outer shel1 H, said nut having a flanged inner end [4 abutting the closed end of the inner shell 8. A screw I2 is extended through the guard l3 into the nut l2 whereby said guard is detachably secured to the closed end of the outer shell II. The outer shell H is crimped substantially midway of its ends to provide a circumferential reinforcing peripheral rib l6 thereon. A pair of spacer rings I'l surround the inner shell 8 adjacent opposite ends thereof to maintain the shells 8 and II in concentrically spaced relation. A washer IS on the nut 12 may be interposed between the outer ends of the inner and outer shells 8 and H for a purpose which will be apparent. A sleeve IQ of soft material is provided on the outer shell ll around the inner end portion thereof for providing a comfortable hand grip..
' As will now be seen, the inner and outer shells 8, l l form guards around the cigarette 5 preventing any sparks from escaping from the holder so that the fire hazard in smoking is eliminated, while at the same time sufficient air may enter the shells to provide for proper combustion. The shells 8, ll may be pulled off the outer end 2 of the bit I to remove a cigarette butt from the bore 8 and insert a new cigarette.
The inner and outer shells 8, H are provided adjacent the front ends thereof with a pair of side lighting openings 20, 2|, respectively, adapted to be registered by rotation of the outer shell ll relative to the inner one on the shouldered portion 3 so that the holder may be opened, as shown in Figure 4, for insertion of a match into the inner shell 8 to light a cigarette 5. Obviously, by rotating the outer shell II from a position in which said openings 20, 2| register, the holder may be closed after the cigarette has been lit, as shown for instance in Figure 3. Preferably, the openings 20, 2| are of rectangular form, as shown for instance in Figure 5.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the 'scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
, A cigarette holder comprising a mouth bit having an outer end bore for the insertion of one end of a cigarette therein, and a pair of outer and inner perforated shells of cylindrical form extending from said end of said bit, the inner shell for enclosing said cigarette, said shells being detachably secured to said bit and having outer closed ends secured together whereby both shells are detachable as a unit, said shells forming guards obviating fire hazard from a lighted cigarette inserted in said bit, the outer shell being rotatable relative to the inner shell and said shells being provided with a pair of side openings therein arranged for registration under such rotation of the outer shell to open the holder for 10 the insertion of a match into the inner shell to light a cigarette, said shells being spaced apart to admit air through the perforations thereof into the inner shell when the side openings are in registration or out of registration, whereby the cigarette may be lit within the inner shell and smoked while the side openings are out of registration.
