To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that we, 'JUsTo on SUSINI ETGHEVERRY and Punno PnRnoMo FIGUEROA, citizens of the United States, and residents of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette and Cigar Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cigarette or cigar holders and its object is to provide a simple and cheap device for holding a cigarette or cigar while being smoked and is provided with a shield to prevent the dropping of ashes or the destruction of articles upon which the li hted cigarette or cigar may be laid, as will be more fully described in .the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

In order to prevent the spilling of ashes and the danger of setting fire to paper and other objects it is generally found desirable in some way to envelop the cigarette or cigar while it is being held in the ordinary mouth piece and to overcome these objections, we provide a mouth piece 10 of practically ordinary construction but having in its front end a socket in which is inserted a thimble 11 of asbestos, vulcanized fiber or other suitable fireproof material and having on its outer face screw threads 12. The socket is further enlarged as at 13 to accommodate the reduced end 14 of a plain or perforated casing 15'of the shape and appearance of a cigar,or any other similar shape and appearance and to the front end of this case is screwed or otherwise fitted a cap 16 with erforations 17 to admit the air to the interior of the casing in order to permit of the smoking of the cigarette 18.

The mouth piece 10 is otherwise of the usual construction and may be used in the ordinary manner to hold a cigarette or a Fig. 5 is cigar if it is desired to dispense with the casing 15 or if it is desired to use a cigar instead of a. cigarette a casing such as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 may be pro-vided, and whichfconsists of a cylinder 19 of wire cloth one end of which is inserted in the socket 13 and whose other end carries a cap 20 which may be made of sheet metal and perforated, if desired. In this instance, an inner cylinder 21 of wire cloth is also provided and carries at its inner end a ring 22 to strengthen it, and also to screw it to the thimble 11.- The two plain or perforated cylinders-l9 and 21 may be connected by pins 21 to strengthen and prevent the separation and loss of these two parts.

It is evident that when such a holder and attachment is in use that the. ashes from the cigarette or the cigar are prevented from falling upon the smoker or surrounding objects and that inuse that the device with its cigarette or cigar is laid upon papers or furniture, there is no danger of the cigarette or cigar burning any of these articles.

In Figs. 3 and 6 is illustrated another modified form of this device in which the outer casing 19 of wire cloth is still used and is provided with the cap 20 and attached to the holder 10 as above described. The thimble 19 in this instance, has screwed to it,

a ring 23 from which project pins 24 arranged so as to form a cage about the cigarette to protect it and surrounding objects from burning, as above referred to, but it must be understood that this cage is not for the purpose of supporting or carrying the cigarette, but instead, it is for the purpose of holding the ashes and preventing damage from'the burning cigarette.

The modified form shown in cross section in Fig. 7 shows a construction which may be adapted in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and in which instance, the wire clot-1125 may be of one continuous piece and rolled about itself to form two cylinders which provides the double thickness necessary to prevent the loss of ashes, but at the same time, abundance of oxygen is furnished to the burning cigarette or cigar to provide for its consumption by fire. In case that it may be found desirable to dispense with this attachment, the mouth piece 10 may be used in the ordinary manner or instead of both of the perforated cylinders 19 and-21, one of these cylinders may be It is obvious that other modifications may be resorted to without departing from the essential features above described.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a cigarette or cigar holder, the combination with a holder havin a socket and a passage for the smoke, o a fire-proof thimble to carry the cigar and fitted in the socket and a perforated case attached to the thimble. A

In a ci arette or cigar holder, the combination wit a holder having a socket in its outer end and a passage for the smoke, of a screw threaded thimb e to carry the cigar and adapted to fit in the socket, and a perforated casing adapted to surround the cigar and having a threaded inner end to secure it to the holder.

3. In a cigarette or cigar holder, the combination with a holder having a socket and a passage for the smoke, of a fire proof thimble to carry the cigar, a perforated cylinder secured to the thimble and a second perforated cylinder fitted in the socket of the holder.

4. In a ci arette or cigar holder, the comand a passage for the smoke, of a fire-proof thimble fitted in the socket to hold the ci ar, a perforated c linder screwed to the thim le, a second per orated cylinder fitted within the socket at one end, and a perforated cap secured to the outer end of the second cylinder.
