INVENTOR. OTTO K usmvz-r ATTORNE Y COMBINATION FILTER AND CIGARETTE HOLDER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The field of the invention relates to filters for cigarettes and wherein a holder for a cigarette carries a filter as distinguished from a cigarette having a filter tip at one end thereof.
2. Description of the Prior Art The prior art, as known to the inventor comprises a filter tip cigarette formed of fibrous material such as cotton. A cellulose tip is often used and in some instances, activated carbon. One type of filters used for cigarettes is known as Aqua Filter, a registered trade mark. This is believed. to consist of a tip of enclosed cotton which is dipped in water as it was found that moisture in the filter aids in eliminating or trapping tars and hot gases from the cigarette smoke.
SUMMARY The combination filter and cigarette holder comprises a first barrel of extended length and provided with an offset portion to provide two portions of different diameters. The first barrel has a ferrule within the same at the offset portion and, likewise, is provided with a ferrule at one end of said barrel. The two ferrules are spaced apart to provide an air chamber within the first barrel. A second barrel telescopes within the offset portion of largest diameter of the-first barrel and is provided with two ferrules, one at each end thereof, which ferrules are separated to provide a second air chamber. lnterposed between the adjacent ferrules of the two telescoped barrels is an inner cartridge filter which may be impregnated with a volatile oil of some character for either pleasure or for medicinal purposes. A filter tip is provided, inserted within the ferrule at the outermost end of the second barrel and the outermost ferrule for the first barrel receives an end of the cigarette to be smoked.
An object of the invention is to provide a combination filter and cigarette holder which may be repeatedly used by utilizing or not utilizing new tips which may be termed filters but are usually short lengths of cigarette. The entire device is disposable and may be formed from a plastic or from treated paper to give stiffness to the device although the ferrules used are preferably of a thin metal such as aluminum. The filter tip at the end of the holder eliminates conventional stems which are held between the teeth. The tip is, of course, disposable thus eliminating all cleaning of the device.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention as an entirety;
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the filter tip shown partly broken away and in section;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of two ferrules used in the long length barrel;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the short length barrel provided at each end with a ferrule;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the long length barrel provided with a ferrule at the offset portion and at one end; and,
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the short length barrel, the filter tip and a filter cartridge with a fragment of the long length barrel for joinder with the short length barrel. Referring to the drawing, the combination filter and cigarette holder includes two barrels 1 and 2. The barrel l is of greater length than the barrel 2 is offset as shown at 3 to provide a barrel having a smaller diameter portion at 4 and a greater diameter portion at 5. The barrel 2 has a diameter substantially equal to that of the portion 4 and the barrel 1 and the barrel 2 are in telescopic relationship. As stated, the barrels may be formed from closely compacted paper, a plastic or metal and to maintain the barrels in juxtaposition, the barrel 1 is provided with a prong 6 which-will penetrate the inner end of the barrel 2 to hold the barrels in working relationship. Barrel 2 is provided with ferrules 7 and 8 at each end thereof and the barrel 1 is provided with a ferrule 9 at its outer end and a ferrule 10 which extends inwardly of the barrel portion 4 from the offset portion 3 of said barrel. The ferrules are of ordinary form and both ferrules are in axial alignment. When the two barrels are telescoped together, the inner ferrules 8 and 10 are in juxtaposition and receive therebetween a filter cartridge 11. The ferrule 7 of the barrel 2 is adapted to receive a filter tip 12. Ferrule 9 for the barrel 1 receives the end of a cigarette 13 of some form. The arrangement shown provides air chambers at 14 and 15 between the ferrules 7 and 8 and 9 and 10. The exterior surfaces of both barrels may be knurled to provide for the gripping thereof. When the parts are in axial alignment as shown in FIG. 2, with a cigarette l3 and the filter tip 12 therein, cigarette smoke is adapted to pass through the air chamber 15, through the filter cartridge 11 into chamber 14 and thence through the filter tip 12. A cool smoke results and different parts such as the filter tip may be replaced as it eliminates the conventional stem which is held between the teeth. This tip is disposable and eliminates cleaning such as by the use of a pipe stem cleaner. The device is inexpensive in cost of manufacture and in construction and will save the expense of purchasing filter tip cigarettes as this device can be repeatedly used with portions thereof replaced such as the cartridge and the filter tip.
Ordinary types of cigarettes which are not provided with a filter tip or those which are provided with a filter tip can be readily held in the ferrule 9 of the long barrel. If the cigarette has a filter tip, then the present combination filter and cigarette holder will have three filters in filtering the smoke. All parts of the cigarette holder may be disconnected for replacement of used parts.
The filters, likewise, guard against infectuous substances in the smoke, particularly when the middle filter is treated with a volatile oil of some character having medicinal qualities. The ferrules are provided with interior knobs or dimples to aid in holding the filter tip andthe cigarette within the ferrules. The prong 6 while aiding in holding the ferrules together particularly the barrels, is also used for removing the filter cartridge 11 from between the two barrels when the two barrels are separated.
I claim:
1. A combination filter and cigarette holder comprising a first barrel provided with an offset portion to provide two connected portions of different diameter, said first barrel at the offset portion being provided with an rels, a filter tip secured to the outer ferrule of the second barrel and the outer ferrule of the first barrel adapted to receive a cigarette, said first barrel being provided with a prong at one end thereof for penetrating the adjacent end of the second barrel.
