NITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
EDWARD J. MALONE, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PETER MIOHELS, OF SAME PLACE.
CRATE-COVER FOR WAGON-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,050, dated December 28, 1880.
Application filed June 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MALONE, of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and" be conveniently carried in wagons without the necessity of tying them. This I have accomplished by a removable crate-cover adapted to be secured to a wagon-box, and rising above the same, so as to inclose a space large enough to accommodate a number of animals in a standing position. The crate-cover is of semicylindrical shape, has both ends closed and a door in its rear end. Its front end is provided with a seat for the driver. adapted to be readily removed from the wagonboX, so that the wagon can be used for other purposes.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of the crate-cover for wagon-boxes. all as fully hereinafter explained, and pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a perspective view of a wagon-box having my crate-cover placed thereon; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on line zz in Fig. 2.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in all three figures.
A is a wagon-box, of the ordinary or any suitable construction, and having the usual removable end-gate a.
B is the crate-cover, having side pieces, I), resting upon the sides of the wagon box. These side pieces, b, are held in position upon the sides of the wagon-box by plates 0, having downwardly-turned ends, and the pieces I) are also removably locked to the sides of the wagon-box by any suitable devices. The pieces I) are connected near their ends by semicircular boards 0 d, and intermediate of said end-boards by semicircular bows e. The top of the crate-cover is formed of strips f, running lengthwise of the same and secured to the end-boards c d and bows e, and ofwires g, con- The crate-cover is necting the end-boards and bows and situated between the strips. The rear end-board d is provided with a door, h, having a suitable fastening. Upon the front end of the cratecover is secured the drivers seat 6, while a foot-rest, k, may be secured to the front endboard d. A semi-cylindrical crate-cover is thus formed, which rises above the wagon-box and adapts the same for the use before stated.
I The ends of the semi-cylindrical crate-cover can be closed by strips, it'desired, instead of by solid boards. I
If the Wagon is used for carrying poultry, the door It only need be opened to load the wagon; but for loading with hogs, sheep, or calves the end-gate a would have to be taken out, and, if the height of the animals require it, the door h opened. After the wagon is loaded the end-gate is replaced and the door h closed and fastened. The animals do not have to be tied.
By making use of cattle-chutes and platforms the wagon can be readily loaded and unloaded.
The crate-cover can be removed from the wagon-box when it is desired to use the wagon for other purposes.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A removablecrate-cover for wagon-boxes, made of semi-cylindrical form and closedat the ends, said cover having side pieces resting on the sides of the wagon-box and bows risingfrom such side pieces,t0 which the longitudinal strips are secured, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination, with the wagon-box A, having removable end-gates, of the semi-cylindrical crate-cover B, removably secured to the wagon-box and having closed ends, and a door, h, in its rear end, substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination, with the wagon-box A,
of the removable crate-cover B, having a driv-- ers seat, i, on its front end, substantially as described and shown.
EDWARD J. MALONE.
