SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,860, dated January 5, 1904. I

To wZZ whom it may concern! Be it known that I, JOHN M. GEOFF, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at North Lawrence, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the end-gate closed and the extension and sideboards properly arranged with reference to each other. Fig. 2 is a view of one corner of the wagon-box, showing one of the side-boards in proper position and also showing the endgate extension in position to be lowered and attached. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the wagon-box and the corner-cleat, showing manner of attaching the hinge-strap. Fig. 4 is'a side elevation showing the end-gate 10W- ered and illustrating said end-gate in dotted lines inclined upward at its outward end.

' Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the end-gate tilted and the bottom end thereof thrown outward and away from theoend wagon-box, also showing the end-gate in dotted lines placed upon the top of side-boards of the Wagon-box to form a seat or for any other purpose.

The present invention has relation to endgates especially designed for wagons of all kinds and styles; and it consists in the novel arrangement and construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 7 p v p Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs. t or In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the end-gate proper, which is formed of a length to properly close the rear end of the wagon-box 2.

To the ends of the end-gate 1 are attached the segmental side plates 3 by means of the angled flanges 4L and 5, which angled flanges are preferably formed integralwith the segmental plates 3; but, as shown, said angled flanges extend up beyond the extreme limit of the segmental plates 3, as illustrated in Application filed June 1, 1903. the drawings, for the double purpose of giving strength and protecting the ends of the end-gate 1 and also providing a means for attaching the end-gate extension 6.

The segmental side plates 3 are each provided with the outward-extending flanges 7, which outward extending flanges may be formed integral with the segmental plates 3 or they may be made separate and attached thereto. In the drawings they are illustrated formed separate and connected by rivets 8; but the construction as to the flanges 7 is immaterial. The bottom of the segmental plates 3 are provided with the outward-extending flanges 9,,which are preferably formed integral therewith. The flanges 9 are extended forward beyond the outward extending flanges 7, for the purpose hereinafter described. v

To the sides of the wagon-box 2 are attached the spring connecting-plates 10, to which spring connecting-plates are attached the rearward-extending springs 11, the free ends of which are provided with the angled portions or parts 12, which are for the purpose of engaging the upper ends of the flanges 7, as illustrated in Fig. 1, when it is desired to hold the end-gate 1 in the position illustrated in Fig.1. The bottom or lower ends of the angled portions or parts 12 areprovided with the outwardrcurved flanges 13, which out ward-curved flanges are for the purpose hereinafter described.

To the end-gate 1 is journaled the rod 14, which rod is provided with the operatinghandle 15 and the spring lifting-bars 16, said spring lifting-bars being formed integral-with the rod 14 and are bent so as "to properly engage the bottom or under sides of the curved flanges 13. When the handle'portion 15 is pulled downward, it in turn elevates the spring lifting-bars 16 and elevates the springs 11, so as to disengage said springs from the upper ends of the outward-extending flanges 7, at which time the end-gate is free to turn upon its hinges 17. When the end-gate has been turned, so as to bring the same in substantially a horizontal plane with the .bottom of the wagonboxproper, the flanges 18 will strike against the angled por- ICO tions or parts 12 of the springs 11 and hold said end-gate in the position illustrated in Fig. 4. I

For the purpose of providing a means for swinging the bottom or lower end of the endgate 1, together with the segmental plates 3 and the difierent parts belonging thereto,outward and away from the end of the wagonbox proper the straps or bars 19 are provided, which straps or bars are pivotally attached to the upper portions of the side-boards of the wagon-box 2, and for the purpose of providing a suitable support for the straps or bars 19, together with the different parts carried by the straps or bars, the metal plates 20 are provided, which metal plates are securely attached to the side-boards 2.

It will be understood that by providing the straps or bars 19, I am enabled to provide two distinct pivotal points for the endgate proper and the different parts attached thereto.

In use it is frequently desirable to set the bottom-of the end-gate out and away from the rear end of the wagon-box, this being especially the case when it is desired to unload grain into an elevator-pit, owing to the fact that when the end-gate is extended in a horizont-al position, as illustrated in Fig. 4, it is in the way of properly dumping the grain or any other material; but byproviding means for throwing the bottom or lower end of the end-gate 1 out and away this difficulty is overcome.

Another advantage in providing two pivotal points is that in case it is desired to load animals into the wagon-box proper the endgate can be drawn or placed upon the top of box or upon the top of the extension sideboards 21, as the case may be, by which atrangement the end-gate is entirely out offlthe way, and the end of the wagon-box can be brought into close proximity with any object from which animals are to be loaded.

Another advantage in placing the end-gate upon the top of the side-boards 21 or the sideboards of the wagon-box is that it forms a convenient seat.

For the purpose of providingsuitable hinges the plates 20 are provided with the sockets 22,and into which sockets the spherical heads 23 are seated and the clamping-bolts 24 passed through the metal forming the socket 22 and the spherical portions 23 as well as the sideboards of the wagon-box 2 and the cornercleats 25, by which arrangement a strong support is provided and the direct pull does not come upon the bolts 24. A similar arrangement is provided for the lower hinge except that the connecting or hinge bolts 26 are simply passed through the spherical portions of the straps or bars 19 and the segmental plates 3.

For the purpose of providing means for attaching the extensions 6 said end-gate is provided with the

27 and 28, which flanges are extended below the bottom of the extensions 6, the flanges 28 provided with the grooves 29, which grooves receive the edges of the flanges 4, and the flange 27 receded in the groove 30, formed in the flange 5, said grooves 29 and 30 being formed by bending a portion of the metal forming part of the flanges 28 and 5.

For the purpose of assisting in holding the springs 11 in proper relative position and at the same time limiting their upward movement the plates 31 are provided, which plates are located substantially as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5. g

In use it frequently happens that it is desirable to hold the end-gate so that its outer end will be elevated, and for the purpose of so holding the end-gate blocks 32 are provided, which blocks are interposed between the stopflanges 18 and the downward-bent parts 12 of the spring 11, this feature being illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 4. For the purpose of preventing the blocks 32 from becoming lost and at the same time holding them in convenient position for use they are secured to the wagon-box sides by suitable chains or their equivalents 33.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to place the endgate 1 in many different positions. (Not herein shown.) For instance,it may be turned down below-the bottom of the wagon-box proper and at right angles, this being convenient at times when it is desired to load heavy articles into the wagon-box by means of skids, the skids being placed upon the body of the box and not upon the end:gate 1.

For the purpose of assisting in holding the side-boards 2 in proper relative position the springs 11 are securely attached to said sideboards and the plates 31 lapped over the said springs 11, by which arrangement the endboards 2 are prevented from easy lateral movement at their extreme outer ends, as it will be understood that little lateral vibration will be permitted and practically none independent of the springs.

By providing the plates 31 and arranging. the same as illustrated they will form stops upon the upward movement of the springs 11, thereby limiting the upward movement to suchvan extent that the arms 16 will be disengaged from the curved arms 13 when the handle 15 is moved downward.

For the purpose of assisting in holding the end-gate in a horizontal position at its front or forward edge or the edge next to the bottom of the wagon-box the cleat 34 is provided, which cleat is extended rearward a short distance beyond the rear end of the bottom 35, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an end-gate the combination of a gate provided with side plates, straps pivoted to said plates at their bottom or lower ends and pivoted to the wagon-box at their upper ends,

and means for holding the end-gate in vertical or locked position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of an end-gate provided with segmental plates secured to the ends of the gate, and said gate hinged at its bottom or lower end to straps and the straps pivoted to the sides of the wagon-box, a rod journaled to the end-gate, and said rod provided with lifting-bars at its end, springs secured in fixed position and their free ends provided with downward-extending portions and the downward-extending portions provided with rearward-curved portions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of a wagon-box, an endgate provided with segmental plates, and said segmental plates provided with outward-extending flanges, springs adapted to engage the rear ends of the outward extending flanges of the segmental plates, means for lifting the springs, and stop-flanges located upon the forward ends of the segmental plates, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. 'The combination of an end-gate having secured thereto side plates, flanges extended above the side plates and one of each of the flanges provided with a groove, an end section provided with flanges and one of each of the flanges provided with a groove, and the flanges extended below the end section and adapted to be connected to the flanges loeated upon the end-gate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. The combination of an end-gate provided withside flanges, socket-plates secured to the side-boards of the wagon-box, and sockets formed in the flanges of the end-gate and straps pivotally attached to the side plates of the end-gate and to the socket-plates secured to the side-boards of the Wagon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

6. The combination of an end-gate inde: pendently hinged at its bottom or lower end and provided with segmental side plates located upon the outside of the side-boards of the wagon, springs secured to the side-boards of the box, plates secured to the side-boards of the box and adapted to overlap the springs, stop-flanges located at the forward end of the outward-exten ding flanges of the side plates, and means for elevating the springs and releasing the segmental flanges and end-gate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
