THOMAS S. STEXVART, OF SALTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
END-GATE FOR DUMPlNG-WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,969, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed October 11, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'lnonns S. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saltsburg, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Dumping-Vagons; and I do declare thefollowingto' be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of acart, showing my improved end-gate; and Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of the end-gate detached from the cart. Fig. at is a view of the end-gate from the rear.
This invention, which is an improvement on the patent granted to me on the 11th day of March, 1884, and numbered 295,072, relates to improvementsin dumping-wagons; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the end-gate may be turned onto the backward extensions of the bodyrails in line with the floor of the wagon-body.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the side bars, fixed to and standing backward from the rear ends of the shaft a a.
B B are standards rising from the ends of the side bars, and having the end-gate hinged to their ends at O G.
D D are brace-rods running near the upper ends of the standards forward and downward to the side bars.
E are actuating-rods connected to the side straps of the end-gate by the eyebolts or eyes 6 c, and having their front ends pivoted upon the sides of the wagon-body c.
When the wagon-body is thrown down, the standards maintain their positions, and the motion of the body, by means of the rods E,
The end: gate is constructed in the following manner:
F F are metal straps 011 which the eyes 6 e are cast. The lower end of each strap F is bent backward and slightly downward, and forms the middle part of the hinge-jointf, as Shown.
G is a metallic head-piece formed on the upper end of the strap F and projecting backward therefrom. g is a latch moving in a re cess on the head-piece, and controlled bythe spring 9. is a detent to prevent the spring driving the latch too far out of the head-piece. The hingebearings care formed on the headpieces.
rH is an iron strap, the lower end of which forms the outer part of the hinge-j oint f, and the upper part of which extends over the covering-board. The hinge f is completed in the usual manner by inserting a pin, f.
I is a board fixed by its ends to the straps G, lying between said straps and the straps F, and covering the discharge end of the wagon. z is a detent-notch made in the metal-covered corner of the upper edge of the board I. The points of the latches g g engage in said notches and keep the board I in place. Vhen the latches are raised out of the notches, the said board may be turned down on the bodyrails, and the'discharge end of the wagon will be uncovered.
The advantage of this construction is that the loading of the wagon will be much facilitated, and in loading with heavy packages or bodies the same will not have to be lifted over the sides of the wagon or the end-gate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dumping-wagon, the combination, with the body, shafts, side bars, A, secured to the rear ends of the shafts, standards B, fixed to the rear ends of the side bars, and actuatingrods E, of the end-gate C, hinged to the upper ends of the standards at c c, and composed of the straps F and II, hinges f, head-pieces G. board I, and suitable devices to connect and disconnect said head-pieces and board at will, substantially as specified.
2. In an end-gate for a dumping-wagon, the combination of the straps F, head-pieces G,
and latch 57, provided with detents g and conposed of vertical end straps carrying headtrolled by the spring with the hinges f, blocks on their'upper ends and. hinged at the straps'H, board I, and notches i z, adapted to lower ends to vertical straps, to which the end 15 receive and hold the point of the latches, subor covering board is fixed, and suitable de- 5 stantially as specified. vices to automatically engage the head-pieces 3.
