I -2 claims; (c1. 2i-79) This `invention relates .to garment fasteners and more particularly to a buckle for use in association with an overall shoulder strap for detachably locking said strap tightly thereto.
One :object of 'the invention is to provide an improved overall buckle of the above nature which may be releasably and adjustably locked to the shoulder strap by means of a swinging angle-shaped toggle cross bar.
Another object is to provide an improved overall tight-locking buckle of the above nature having a pair of opposed transverse outwardly curved tongues at its lower end to facilitate the attachment to and removal of the buckle from the overall button.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, easy to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance and very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a front plan View of a buckle embodying the features and principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a rear plan view similar to Figure 1 in which the angle bar is shown in locked position.
Figure 3 is a front plan view, similar to Figure 1, showing the buckle and portions of the overall shoulder strap and the overall garment, which is attached to said buckle by a button.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the section being taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows. l
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I0 indicates a buckle frame which is provided with a straight top edge II and a pair of side edges I2 and I3 which have straight upper portions and convex bottom portions I4 and I5. The buckle II) is also vprovided with a substantially flat bottom edge I6 having a central depending convex section I1.
In order to permit the insertion of a shoulder strap 36 through the lower part of the buckle frame, provision is made of a transverse opening I8 into which extends, from the bottom portion ofside sections |4Jand I5, a pair of tongues I9 and 20 having their inner extremities ,2I, and 22'spaced apart and curled out of the plane of said frame as clearly shown in the drawing. Y
By means otthis constructionpthe attaching neck 39 of a button 38 secured to an overall garment 31 may readily be passed downwardly between the tongues I9 and 20 with a snap action to permit said neck 39 to engage in a semi-circular central recess 23 located in the upper edge of the convex central section I1 and with the button lying in front of said tongues I9 and 20.
Surrounding the buckle frame at a point just inside the periphery thereof is a raised stillening rib 24 pressed in the metal, providing a continuous groove 25 on the rear of said buckle body frame I0.
In order to permit the buckle to be detachably locked on the shoulder strap 36 of the overall in any desired adjusted position along the length thereof, provision is made of a pair of parallel rearwardly bent ears 26 and 21 located at the top of the body frame I0.
The ears 26 and 21 are provided with apertures 26a and 21a for receiving the reduced end pins 26h, 21h respectively of an angle shaped toggle crossbar 28 which is adapted to be freely pivoted in said apertures 26a and 21a (see Figure 5).
The toggle cross bar 28 is provided with a relatively wide flat intermediate section 29 which is adapted to extend parallel to the buckle body frame I0 when in locked position shown in Figures 2 and 4, and perpendicular to said buckle frame I0 when in unlocked position respectively.
The intermediate section 29 of the crossbar 28 is provided with a central concave recess 30 adapted to lie substantially parallel with a curved section I8a of the opening I8 in the body of the buckle when in locked position. The section 29 is held in such raised position by a pair of inclined curved tongues 3I and 32 at the side extremities thereof which engage the shoulder strap when the crossbar is locked.
The toggle crossbar 28 is provided at its rear end with a short locking section 33 located substantially at right angles to the intermediate section 29 and said locking section 33 is provided with two alined spaced rows of teeth 34 and 35, which are adapted to engage the fabric of the shoulder strap 36 with a snap toggle action at a point directly in alinement with the groove 25 on the rear surface of the frame I0.
By means of this construction it will be seen that the crossbar may be readily released by inserting one nger of the user in the recess 30 behind the intermediate section 29, and swinging said crossbar outwardly.
The button 38 previously mentioned is preferably secured to the fabric of the overall garment 31 near the top thereof by means of a pair of spaced clamping disks 40 secured to the neck 39 and embracing said fabric.
While there has ybeen disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specic disclosure, but may be modied and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is densired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a buckle, a substantially rectangular frame having a transverse opening therein, and a straight upper edge, a narrow groove extending below the surface of said frame adjacent said upper edge, a pair of apertured ears upstanding from the plane of said frame at the opposite sides thereof adjacent said upper edge, a toggle crossbar having a pair of pins on the extremities thereof pivotally mounted in the apertures of said ears to permit said crossbar to swing with respect to said buckle frame, said crossbar having an upstanding short locking'section at its upper end which lies at right angles to the plane of said buckle frame and in alinement with said groove when said crossbar is in locked position 'whereby it will forceably press a shoulder strap in kinked condition into said groove with a strong toggle action, the width of said narrow groove being substantially the same as the thickness of said s hort locking section. 5
2. The buckle as defined in claim 1 in which said crossbar has a pair of inclined tongues for engaging said shoulder strap when in locked condition and providing a raised recess therebetween to permit the crossbar to be swung open by the insertion of the users linger thereunder.
