SEAL-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,356, dated December 14, 1880.

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM HALsEY, of N o. 312 Montgomery street, in the city of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the application of this look to a mail-bag, for which this look is especially designed, and shows the top of a mailbag closed and fastened with this look. Fig. 2 shows the construction of the said lock; Fig. 3, the metallic catch or shank, which is fastened to a strap and passes around the mail-bag and through the staples and into the lock. Fig. 4 shows top view of the look when closed or locked, with key-hole and designa tion-tag inserted in the top of the lock. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the lock, showing slot for the designatioi'i-tag.

The object of my invention is to furnish a device for a self-closing lock or self-locking lock which at the same time closes and locks in the designation-tag, and which can be permanently and securely fastened to the strap going around the mail-bag, or to the bag itself, and also be similarly fastened to car-doors on railroad freight-trains, or other places where it is desirable to attach the lock to the door, or place, or thing required to be locked up.

In the drawings, A is the metallic catch or shank. B B are two arms or clutches, Which are kept in position by the springs O O and the piece H, the latter being cast with the case of the lock.

When it is necessary to unlock the look I do so by use of the levers or pieces D D, operated by the cam-pieces F F. I make these cams separate, instead of in one piece, to prevent the lock from being easily picked, as the use of both levers or pivoted pieces D D is necessary to unlock the lock, these pieces or levers D D being worked on the pivot E, and any sufficient number of cams, at option, can be used with guards, &c., to effectually prevent any picking of the lock. a

I make the edge of the look at I I beveled,

to make a tighter and closer fitting joint than can be made by a square edge, and also to keep out dust, dirt, &c.

In the upper part or top side of the look I make a slot, G, in which I propose to put the designation-tag, (marked in Fig. 4 Oakland, Gal.,) and when in place the tag cannot be re moved or lost out until the lock is unlocked at the designation or by persons having a key to the lock.

This combination of lock and designationtag can be fastened to the strap going around the ordinary mail-bag or to the bag-cover by rivets or other means, and can also be fastened to and used on car-doors, valises, or any other place where it would be useful or desired; but it is especially designed for mailbags, where it is desirable to have a self-locking lock that can be quickly closed and fastened, and where each lock is attached to the bag to which it properly belongs, and cannot getlost therefrom, and contains also the designation or place to which said mail-bag is to be forwarded; and the lock is susceptible of being made or issued in series with different keys and different combinations from time to time, thereby afiording still greater protection against being picked or opened by false keys or in any other manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is-- g The described lock, consisting of the combination of the cams or lever-operating pieces F F, the two-armed pivoted levers D D, for actuating the clutches or arms B B, the arms B 'B, fixed piece H, reacting-springs O, and slot G, adapted to receive and to retain the designating-tag when the lock is closed, all substantially as shown and described.
