The present invention relates to loom shuttles and, as illustrated herein relates more particularly to means for preventing unthreading of such shuttles when the shuttles are in use.
Various expedients have heretofore been used in the automatically threading loom shuttles for preventing unthreadingof the shuttle. Some of these devices have prevented unthreading of the shuttle but have at the same time increased the difficulty of threading the shuttle. Furthermore, these thread trapping devices in some instances have been unsatisfactory since they have presented surfaces which have broken or frayed the fibres of the filling as the shuttle was being threaded. This is objectionable when rayon or other synthetic filling is being used since even though the fraying was insufficient to break the filling, it was sufiicient to produce frayed or projecting fibres over a substantial extent of filling which would detract materially from the appearance of the cloth.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means for preventing unthreading of loom shuttles and still permit ready threading thereof without danger of fraying or braking the filling. To this end, the shuttle is provided with a trap member located in or close to the longitudinal thread passage and having a thread engaging surface arranged to prevent fraying or breaking of the filling thread during threading of the shuttle. As illustrated, the thread trap is provided with a rear end portion which is located in a notch in the back wall of the shuttle and an intermediate portion inclined downwardly and forwardly to cause the filling thread to be urged toward and under the point of the threading block and a forward end portion terminating under the point of the threading block.
With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the right hand end of a shuttle embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the threading block;
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the threading block;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the threading block and trap member; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the relation between the trap member and the shuttle body.
The shuttle in which the present invention is embodied comprises a. shuttle body I0 having a cavity I2 formed therein for receiving a filling carrier 14. The right hand end of the shuttle is provided with a recess 16 for receiving a threading block Ill.
The threading block I8 is of usual construction and is provided with a longitudinal thread passage 20 which communicates with a side delivery eye 22. A vertical wall 24 and a wall 26 define the front and rear walls, respectively, of the longitudinal thread passage 20. The inner end of the longitudinal thread passage is provided with a pair of tension members 28 between which the filling F is received. The front wall 26 is provided with an outwardly and rearwardly extending horn 38 which terminates in a groove or recess '32 formed in the shuttle body Ill. The
threading block [8 is also provided with a downwardly extending horn 34 beneath which the filling thread F passes to the side delivery eye 22.
The threading block [8 is provided with a trap member 36 formed from a fiat sheet of metal, preferably brass. The fiat metal sheet is cut to provide a supporting portion 38 which is received in a recess 40 formed in the back wall 24 of the threading block. The fiat metal sheet is provided with an upwardly extending portion 42 and a laterally extending portion 44. The portion 42 is bent upwardly and rearwardly and its point fits snugly into a notch 45 formed in the back wall of the recess iii of the shuttle. The portion 42 is so bent that it presents a downwardly and forwardly inclined surface to the filling F and thus normally urges the thread away from the back wall of the thread block and forwardly and downwardly under the horn 30. gaging edges of the portion 42 are so arranged that the filling thread F cannot be trapped between said edges and the body of the shuttle. The portion 44 extends substantially horizontally in a forward direction and then extends horizontally and toward the left, as viewed in Fig. 3. The upper edge of the portion 44 adjacent to the end portion thereof extends above the lower rear edge 46 of the horn 30 and thus forms an effective trap which prevents the filling thread from lifting upwardly out of the longitudinal thread passage 20.
With the above trap member, threading of the shuttle is not interfered with but is facilitated due to the inclination of the thread engaging surfaces of the trap member 36. The filling thread F during the first pick after bobbin transfer is threaded under the horn 30 of the threading block and during the next or return pick the filling thread enters under the depending The thread en of the horn 30 but; complete unthreading of the shuttle is prevented by'the trap member 36. Similarly if the filling thread F loops as the shuttle is brought to rest at the end of a pick,
such looping will not completely unthread the shuttle since the trap member 36 will prevent the thread from rising out :ofthethread passage.

1. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a threading block and a side delivery eye, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage, a horn forming a lateral extension of the front wall of said passage, and a member supported by the rear wall of said passage andhaving a thread engaging portion projecting forwardly and downwardly from said rear wall and a second portion having a free end extending laterally and outwardly from said first portion under said horn to trap the filling thread as the shuttle is threaded.
2'. An-automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a threading block and a side delivery eye, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage, a horn extending laterally from the front wall of said passage, and atrap member supported'by the rear wall of said passage, said trap being formed of metal and bent to provide a downwardly and forwardly extending intermediate portion projecting across said passage and a forward end portion extending laterally and outwardly under said horn and above the rear lower edge of said horn to form a filling trap.
3. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a threading block and a side delivery eye, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage, a horn extending laterally from the front wall of said passage, said horn having a depending tip at its lower rear. edge, and a member comprising a filling engaging portion fixed to the rear wall of the threading block and bent forwardly and downwardly across said passage, and a second portion connected to said first portion and extendinghorizontally and outwardly under said horn and having a free outer end part extending Having thus described my invention what 1 l block and extending forwardly and downwardly across the longitudinal thread passage and a secend portion connected to the first portion and extending at substantially right angles thereto along said passage and under said horn and having an end part extended above the lower rear edge of said born to form a filling trap.
5. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a threading block and a side delivery eye, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage, a horn extending laterally of the front wall-of said passage, and a member comprising a filling engaging portion projecting forwardly and downwardly across the thread passage, a rearwardly directed portion filling in a notch in said shuttle body, and a second portion forming an extension of the first mentioned portion and extending outwardly along said passage and under said horn to trap the filling.
6. A threading block for use in automatically threading loom shuttles, having in combination, front and rear walls forming between them a longitudinal thread passage, a horn formed as an outward extension of said front wall, and a member fixed to said rear .wall and having a curved thread guiding surface projecting downwardly and forwardly across said thread passage and an end portion extending outwardly along said passage and under said horn to form a thread trap. A threading block for use in automatically threading loom shuttles having in combination front and rear walls forming between them a longitudinal thread passage, a horn formed as an outward extension of the front wall of said passage, and a member formed of sheet metal fixed to said rear wall and having a rearward portion extending into a notch formed in a said horn to form a thread ANTONIO VILLANI.
