passage and a horn which projects from the front wall of the threading block outwardly and rearwardly above the thread passage. The running filling becomes threaded into the thread passage below the horn during the first pick after transfer, and is intended to be guided by the horn forwardly and downwardly into the side delivery eye during the secondv pick after transfer. In view of the possibility, of the filling becoming unthreaded from beneath the horn instead of threading into the side delivery eye, it is desirable that the shuttle be provided with thread trapping means to hold the filling against unthreading, and to thereby insure the threading of the filling into the side delivery eye.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a shuttle of the type mentioned, which shuttle shall have a novel and improved form of thread trapping means for holding the filling against unthreading as aforesaid.
The aforementioned and other objects of the invention are accomplished by the construction illustrated on the accompanying drawing, of
which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the thread delivery and of a shuttle comprising the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section taken approximately on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, but to a larger scale; and
Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section taken approximately on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
The shuttle shown on the drawing is comprised of a shuttle body I having a longitudinally extending cavity 2 for reception of a filling carrier, such as bobbin 3, and certain threading devices to be hereinafter described. The shuttle, being for use in an automatic loom of the bobbinchanging type, is provided with suitable usual means (not shown) for releasably holding the filling carrier in the cavity whereby the filling carrier may be automatically replaced by a new one whenever the filling supply becomes substantial- 1y exhausted.
The threading devices include a side delivery eye formed in the shuttle body at 4, and a threading block fixed in a recess 5 in the shuttle body. The threading block has a longitudinally ex- Hopedale, Mass, a cor- 1936, Serial No. 77,394
tending thread passage-in alignment with the cavity 2, the thread passage being defined by the floor B-and front and rear walls I and 8,- respectively, of the threading block. The threading block has a horn 9 which projects from the front wall 1 outwardly and rearwardly above the thread passage. The rearward end of the horn is free and is preferably turned downwardly, as at I0, into a groove ll whichis formed in the shuttle body. The groove ll extends from the recess 5 longitudinally outwardly, the groove be ing approximately in alignment with the recess and thread passage and communicating directl therewith.
It may be here noted that expressions denoting direction, as herein employed, are applicable to the shuttle when the latter is considered to be positioned in a loom and boxed at the side of the loom toward which the tip l2 points. Thus, forwardly is in a direction from the top-of the sheet of drawing toward the bottom thereof on Fig. 1, and outwardly is in a direction from the cavity 2 toward the tip l2 of the shuttle.
The transfer of a filling carrier into the cavity 2 occurs at a time when the shuttle is boxed as described. The .filling end then extends from the filling carrier in the shuttle outwardly and upwardly, over the threading block,to the usual fixed'holder (not shown). Thereafter, the-shuttle is moved bodily rearwardly and then picked in a direction toward the left, Fig. 1. As the shuttle is picked, the filling unwinds from the filling carrier and in unwinding swirls or.-balloons about in ,a, manner, to become threaded down into the thread passage and beneath the horn 9. The filling threads down into the thread passage and groove I l, beneath the horn 9, very early in the first pick after transfer, and continues to run in such position throughout the remainder of the pick. When the shuttle is picked in the opposite direction, the filling is intended to be guided by the horn through a suitable opening I3 into the side delivery eye 4. The present invention provides a wire thread trapping member for guarding the end of the horn 9 and thus preventing the filling from unthreading from beneath the horn.
The thread trapping member shown on the drawing is comprised of a single piece of wire having legs 14 and I5, and a connecting bar l6. The leg I4 is formed at the inner end of the wire and is fixed at I! in the rear wall of the T608585 as by being driven into the wood of the shuttle body. From the point H, the leg [4 is inclined forwardly and downwardly to a point forwardly of the end ID of the horn, for a purpose to be described.
The connecting bar l6 of the thread trapping member extends from the front end of the leg [4 longitudinally outwardly beneath the horn 9. It will be noted that the bar is positioned in the thread passage and groove approximately centrally thereof, it being above the bottom of the groove and also above and forwardly of the bottom of the down-turned end H]. The connecting bar as shown on the drawing inclines slightly downwardly from its inner to its outer end. The outer leg I6 of the thread trapping member is fixed in the groove H as by being driven into the rear wall of the groove above the bottom thereof.
The purpose of the inclination of the leg 14 of the trapping member is to facilitate threading of the filling down into the groove II. For this same purpose, the rear face of the down-turned end Ill of the horn may be inclined downwardly and forwardly as shown on Fig. 3. Thus, when the shuttle is started on the first pick after transfer, the filling will swirl rearwardly and downwardly about the rearward free end of the horn and. will strike against the inclined leg I4. The filling will then be drawn or pulled forwardly and will be deflected downwardly and forwardly to pass beneath the down-turned end it! of the horn. As the shuttle continues its fiight the filling will assume a running position in the thread passage and groove beneath the thread trapping member. It will be obvious that the thread trapping member will positively prevent the filling in the thread passage and groove beneath the member from unthreading about the free end of the horn. Thus, the entry of the filling into the side delivery eye during the second pick after transfer is insured.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a bobbin-receivlng cavity therein, a threading block fixed in a recess in said shuttle body, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage and a horn which projects outwardly and rearwardly above said thread passage, the rearward end of said horn being free and being turned downwardly into a longitudinally extending groove provided therefor in said shuttle body, and a guard wire having its inner end fixed in the rear wall of said recess and its outer end fixed in said groove at a point outwardly from said horn, said guard wire between its ends extending longitudinally of said thread passage and groove beneath said horn, the said longitudinally extending part of said guard wire being positioned forwardly of and above the down-turned end of said horn.
2. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a bobbin-receiving cavity therein, a threading block fixed in a recess in said shuttle body, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage and a horn which projects outwardly and rearwardly above said thread passage, the rearward end of said horn being free and being turned downwardly into a longitudinally extending groove provided therefor in said shuttle body, and a wire thread trapping member having outer and inner legs and a bar connecting the same, said inner leg being fixed in the rear wall of said recess and being inclined downwardly and forwardly, saidouter leg being fixed in said groove at a point outwardly from said horn, said connecting bar extending from said inner leg longitudinally outwardly in said thread passage and groove beneath said horn, said bar being positioned forwardly of and above the down-turned end of said horn.
3. An automatically threading loom shuttle comprising a shuttle body having a bobbin-receiving cavity therein, a threading block fixed in a recess in said shuttle body, said threading block having a longitudinal thread passage and a horn which projects outwardly and rearwardly above said thread passage, the rearward end of said horn being free and being turned downwardly into a longitudinally extending groove provided therefor in said shuttle body, and a wire thread trapping member having outer and inner legs and a bar connecting the same, said inner leg being fixed in the rear wall of said recess and being inclined downwardly and forwardly, said outer leg being fixed in the rear wall of said groove above the bottom of the latter, said connecting bar extending from said inner leg outwardly beneath said horn to said outer leg, said connecting bar being positioned in said thread passage and groove forwardly of and above the down-turned end of said horn, whereby the running filling is guided into said thread passage and groove beneath said thread trapping member and is thereafter prevented from unthreading rearwardly about the free end of said horn.
