' 3 Claims. (cuss-'19s) In certain types of looms, the outgoing fining thread is cut loose to the shuttle eye so that the ejected bobbin or filling carrier can unthread'the eye. One form of thread cutter which is particularly well adapted for this purpose includes a flat plate carried by the front wall of the shuttle and located close to the side delivery eye so that the filling thread extends across the plate and is in the path of movement of a thread cutter when the thread cutter moves toward the shuttle during the filling carrier transferring operation.
Under some conditions, the filling may be slack and as a result the filling will sag and may fall below the thread cutter and consequently will not be severed. As a result, the shuttle will not be unthreaded and the outgoing filling end will be carried into the shed on the next pick forming an extra end which forms a defect in the cloth.
One object of the present invention is to provide a shuttle having an improved thread cutter by the use of which the above mentioned difficulty will be overcome. To this'end, the thread cutter is provided with means which will support the filling thread and prevent its sagging below the thread cutter thus insuring that each outgoing filling thread will be severed during the transferring operation.
With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates preferred embodiment of the invention in which:
Fig. 1 is a View in front elevation of a shuttle in which the present invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a view in section taken along the line II-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutting member;
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken along the line IV-IV of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a view in section taken along the line V-V of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a view in section taken along the line VI--VI of Fig. 1.
The shuttle l0 shown in the drawing is generally of usual construction and includes a shuttle body l2 having the usual filling carrier recess I4 and a cavity [6 in which the threading block I8 is supported. The shuttle body I2 may, as illustrated, be provided with vulcanized fiber covered front, back-and" bottom walls 20, 22, 24, respectively The threading block [8 is maintained in position by a bolt'26. The threading block is of usual construction and, as illustrated, comprises front and rear walls 28, 30 forming between them a usual longitudinal thread passage. Tension pads'3'4 are mountedinsaid passage adjacent to the inner end thereoffi-The thread passage 32 communicates with a side deliveryeye 36 which is provided with vertical thread engaging posts 38 and 40.
The bolt 26 is threaded into a rearwardly extending boss 42 of a flange nut 44. The flange nut 44 fits into an opening formed in the fiber front wall 20 and into a recess formed in the shuttle body l2. Thus the flange nut 44 is adequately supported over its entire extent and cannot move when clamped in position by the bolt 26.
In the present construction, the flange nut 44 is provided with a lateral extension 46 having a flat forward exposed face located in a plane offset rearwardly from the forward surface of the flange nut 44. The flange nut 44 is provided with a generally horizontally disposed groove 48 in which the filling thread runs when the shuttle is picked from the left hand shuttle box. The groove 48, as shown most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, is so shaped that a downwardly and rearwardly inclined shelf 50 is formed which supports the filling and permits the filling to be maintained at a level sufficiently high so that some portion of the filling will be above the lower edge of the extension 46. Under most conditions, the filling thread will be under sufiicient tension so that it will extend substantially horizontally across the extension 46. Under some conditions, due, for example, either to overrunning of the filling or to slight rebound of the shuttle the filling may sag across the plate or extension 46 but will still be located in position to be out. As shown in Fig. 5, the groove 48 is quite deep near the side delivery eye and then gradually diminishes in depth until it reaches the left hand edge 52 of the nut 44. The groove 48, however, is deep over a sufiicient length to provide adequate support for the filling and the inherent stiffness of the filling will cause it to extend out over the extension 48 a distance suificient to be engaged by the other cutting element.
The forward face of the extension 46 is located rearwardly of the forward face of the flange nut 44 and thus the running filling does not contact said extension. Thus even if said surface is scarred, it will not contact the filling thread and cause the fibersthereof to be cut or torn. The
present construction, therefore, not only supports the filling thread in position to be cut but also prevents undesired contact of the filling thread with the cutting surface of the extension 46 thus preventing undesired cutting or tearing of the fibers of the filling.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a shuttle for automatic looms having a threading block, a side delivery eye and a bolt for securing the threading block in position, a plate having a threaded opening for receiving said bolt and located close to said sidevdelivery eye, said plate having a substantially horizontal groove therein in which the filling runs during operation of the loom, and an extension on said plate having a forward plane surface against which the filling is out, said forward surface of said extension being offset rearwardly from the forward face of said'plate to prevent engagement of the running filling with said forward surface of said extension.
2. In a shuttle for automatic looms having a threading block, a side deliver-y eye and a, bolt for securing said threading block in position, a plate located closed to the side delivery eye having a threaded opening in which said bolt is threaded, said plate having a substantially horizontal groove therein, having one Wall thereof inclined downwardly and rearwardly to constitute a shelf on which the running filling is supported, and an extension on said plate having a forward plane surface against which the filling is cut, said forward surface of, said extension 1 being offset rearwardly from the forward face of i said plate to prevent engagement of the running filling with said forward surface of said extension.
3. In a shuttle for automatic looms having a threading block, a side delivery eye and a bolt for securing said threading block in position, a plate located close to the side delivery eye having a threaded opening in which said bolt is threaded, said plate having a substantially horizontal groove therein, having one wall thereof in- 20 clined downwardly and rearwardly to constitute a shelf on which the running filling is supported, and a lateral extension on said plate having a flat surface offset rearwardly from the forward surface of said plate and against which the-filling is 25 cut to prevent undesired engagement of the running filling with said plate;
