The present invention relate generally to automatically threading shuttles for looms and, as illustrated herein, relates more particularly to side delivery eyes for such shuttles.
Automatically threading loom shuttles are usually provided with a passage through which the filling thread is guided to the side delivery eye. Under some conditions, the filling thread will move upwardly out of the side delivery eye, thus, unthreading the shuttle at least partially with the result that the filling will break and, thus, cause a defect in the cloth. It has heretofore been proposed to provide a filling trap at the side delivery eye. Some of these traps operated satisfactorily but in some cases interfered with the threading of the shuttle or were fragile and were subject to excessive breakage.
One object of the present invention is to provide a side delivery eye which will effectively trap the filling thread without interfering with the threading of the shuttle and which will be sufficiently rugged to withstand long continued use. To this end, and in accordance with one feature of the invention, the shuttle is provided with a side delivery eye having a passage substantially in alinement with the thread guiding passage in the shuttle'bocly and havin depending means below which the filling thread normally runs during operation of the loom and which operates to prevent the filling from being thrown upwardly out of the side delivery eye.
Another object of the invention is to improve generally upon the construction and operation of loom shuttles.
With the above and other objects and features in View, the invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanyin drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the right hand end portion of a shuttle embodying the present invention;
Fig, 2 is a perspective view of the shuttle shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in section taken along the line III-III of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view, partly in section, showing the side delivery eye in position in the shuttle; and
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the side delivery eye.
The present shuttle is of the type disclosed and claimed in an application filed in the name of Carl D. Brown of even date herewith. The shuttle comprises a shuttle body Ill having a recess I2 in which a filling carrier M is releasably supported. The shuttle body is provided with a filling thread receivin and guiding passage I6. ihe passage I6 is curved and extends between the recess I2 and the side delivery eye [-8. At its lower end portion, the passage I6 is enlarged and forms a passage in which the filling thread F runs when the shuttle is completely threaded. The thread passage I6 is provided with a flexible tension member 20 which presses against the convex wall of the groove or passage I6 and guides the filling thread F into the side delivery eye during the first pick after transfer, thus, completely threading the shuttle. The flexible tension member or wire 20 is anchored at one end in the shuttle body l0 and at its other end it is connected to a tightening screw 22 by use of which tension on the wire 20 may be increased or decreased as desired.
The flexible tension member 20, screw 22 and the shape of the passage I6 are not of our invention, they being shown and described merely as an example of one form of threading arrangement that may be used with our novel side delivery eye as hereinafter described.
As shown most clearly in Fig. 4, the side delivery eye I8 is supported in an opening 24 formed in the front wall of the shuttle body l0 and in line with the forward end of the thread passage I6. The eye I8 is preferably formed from a single piece of metal in the form of a cylinder closed at one end, portions of which are cut away to provide thread passages and means for trapping the filling thread after the shuttle is completely threaded. The eye I8 is provided with a thread receiving slot or passage 26 which is in alinement with the forward end of the narrow thread passage I6 formed in the shuttle body I0. As viewed in Fig. 4, the lower inner left hand portion is cut away at 28 to form an enlarged opening having its transverse dimension substantially equal to the transverse dimension of the enlarged lower end 30 of the thread passage IS. A portion 32 of the cylindrical side wall of the eye I8 at the rear end of the slot or passage 26 is retained in the form of a depending hook. The opening 34 forwardly of the h0ok32 is so located that the filling thread F will normally run therein when the shuttle is completely threaded. The hook 32 thus acts as a trap and prevents the filling from moving upwardly through the thread slot 26 and out of the side delivery eye I8. The eye I8 is maintained in position by a screw 36.
The eye I 8 need not necessarily be formed from a cylindrical cup shaped member but may be formed from a fiat piece of stock stamped or otherwise formed into suitable shape.
' Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-a ent of the United States is:
1. In a loom shuttle, a shuttle body having a recess for receiving a replaceable filling carrier and a thread passage communicating with said recess, and a side delivery eye at the forward end of said passage, said eye being generally cylindrical in shape and having a thread receiving slot in alinement with the forward end of said thread passage, a hook on said eye adjacent to the thread passage end of said slot defining an opening in which the filling thread normally runs when the shuttle is completely threaded and forming a trap to prevent the filling thread from being thrown upwardly through said thread receiving slot.
2. In a loom shuttle, a shuttle body having a recess for receiving a replaceable filling carrier and a thread passage communicating with said recess, and a side delivery eye having an open thread receiving slot in alinement with the forward end of said thread passage, a hook on said eye adjacent to the rear end position of said open thread receiving slot forming a wall of an opening in which the filling thread normally runs -passage having an open unobstructed thread receiving slot in alinement with the forward end of said thread passage, and a depending'hook on said eye located adjacent to the rear end portion of the thread receiving slot and forming a wall of an opening in which the filling normally runs when the shuttle is completely threaded and forming a trap for preventing the filling from being thrown upwardly through said slot and out of said side delivery eye after the shuttle has been completely threaded.
