The present invention relates to automatically threading loom huttles and, as illustrated herein, relates more particularly to threading devicesfor such shuttles.
Shuttles of the above type are provided with a shuttle body in which an automatically replaceable filling carrier or bobbin is mounted. The shuttle is also provided with a side delivery eye and a threading block for guiding the running filling into the side delivery eye during the first two picks after transfer of the filling carrier or bobbin into the shuttle. The threading block is provided with a longitudinally extending thread passage which communicates with a lateral passage formed between the outer end of the threading block and the body of the shuttle and through which the running filling is guided to the side delivery eye. The threading block is also provided with a horn which projects outwardly and rearwardly over the longitudinal thread passage and a depending horn in the lateral thread passage and under which the filling thread is guided during the second pick after transfer as it passes to the side delivery eye. In prior shuttles, the shuttle will sometimes become unthreaded by the filling moving out of the side delivery eye. The filling will then move from under the depending horn and out the lateral thread passage with the result that the filling may loop around the outwardly extending horn or may move out from under aid horn and completely unthread the shuttle. In either case, the filling thread will break during the next pick causing either a partial or complete mispick and stopping the loom with consequent lo s of production.
Prior shuttles have been provided with devices for preventing the filling thread from moving upwardly and unthreading the shuttle but these devices have not been entirely satisfactory under all conditions of use since in some cases they have interfered with the threading of the shuttle and in other cases where they have not materially interfered with the threading of the shuttle they have been relatively fragile and have broken during operation of the loom and, as a result, have not been efiective to prevent unthreading of the shuttle.
One object of the present invention is to provide an automatically threading loom shuttle, having a threading block, as above mentioned, with improved means which will effectively prevent unthreading of the shuttle without interfering with the threading of the shuttle. To this end, the shuttle is provided with a plurality of light resilient members mounted in the body of particular reference to the acompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which- Fig, l is a plan view of the outer end portion of a shuttle embodying the present invention;

The shuttle shown in Fig. 1 comprises a shuttle body Ill having a longitudinally extending cavity [2 which receives a filling carrier or bobbin I4 having filling F thereon. The shuttle body is provided with means (not shown) by which the bobbin is held in the cavity and which permits automatic replacement of the bobbin when the filling thereon becomes substantially exhausted.
The shuttle is provided with threading means which includes a suitable threading block I6 for guiding the filling thread to a side delivery eye I8 formed in the front wall of the shuttle. The threading block i6 is secured in position in a recess 29 formed in the body of the huttle and communicating with the cavity 12. The threading block it comprises a floor 22, front and back walls 2 1, 26, a horn 28 which extends outwardly and rearwardly from the front wall 24, and a depending horn 30 which projects downwardly into a lateral thread passage 32 formed between the threading block I6 and the outer end wall of the block receiving recess 20.
The shuttle is provided with a longitudinal thread passage formed by the floor 22 and the front and rear walls 24, 26 of the threading block it. The passage communicates with the cavity I2 and extends longitudinally through the threading block. The passage is provided with a thread guide or scroll 34 of usual construction. The horn 28 projects rearwardly and outwardly from the front wall 24 above the longitudinal thread passage. The outer end of the horn 28 turns downwardly and terminates in a groove 36 formed.
in the shuttle body ID. The dependinghorn 30 extends downwardly from the horn 28 and is positioned rearwardly and outwardly of the side delivery eye I3. The lower surface of the horn 30 is provided with a guiding surface 38 under which the filling thread passes to the ide delivery eye.
As shown most clearly in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5, the present shuttle is provided with a filling trap member 40 mounted in the shuttle body I and extends across the threading block recess 22, under the horn 28, and engages the horn 30 and extends generally diagonally across the lateral thread passage 32. The trap member 40 is formed of bristles such, for example, as pig bristles or other relatively stiff flexible fibres such as nylon. The bunch of bristles 49 is secured in a hole formed in the shuttle body I0 and which bunch extends forwardly, outwardly and downwardly and crosses the threading block recess just outwardly of and below the top edge of the rear wall 25 of the threading block l 5. The bristles are so arranged that they bear against the outer surface of the horn 3d and the ends thereof terminate just short of or against the outer wall of the threading block recess 22. The bristles 43 are so positioned that they are free to bend or flex downwardly to permit the filling thread to pass under the horn 23 and under the horn 36 to the side delivery eye. Flexing or bending of the bristles ill upwardly is limited by engagement thereof with the under surface of the horn 28. Thus, the filling cannot be thrown upwardly and out of the lateral thread passage 32 leading to the side delivery eye.
In the operation of the loom, a filling carrier I4 is transferred into the cavity l2 when the shuttle is boxed at the right hand side of the loom. At this time the filling thread F extends outwardly and upwardly from the bobbin l4 over the threading block it to a holder (not shown).
'The shuttle is then moved bodily rearwardly and is then picked to the left in the usual manner. As the shuttle is picked the filling F is unwound from the filling carrier and is guided under the scroll 3d and is guided rearwardly by the rearwardly inclined surface of the horn 2E and under said horn. Thus, at the end of the first pick after transfer, the filling extends along the longitudinal thread passage under the scroll 34 and under the horn 28 and overlies the bristles dd.
During the next pick, the filling thread F will be guided into the lateral thread passage 32 and the tension on the filling thread will bend the bristles 33 downwardly to an extent sufiicient to permit the filling to pass between the bristles and the outer surface of the depending horn 3!). The thread will then pass beneath the horn 30 to the side delivery eye iii completely threading the shuttle.
The swirling or ballooning of the filling thread will not be effective to unthread the shuttle since the bristles til bearing against the horn 3i] and extending across the lateral thread passage 32 will prevent any appreciable raising of the thread out of the side delivery eye. Even though substantial pressure, sufficient to' bend the bristles upwardly, was exerted by the filling thread, the shuttle would still fail to unthread since the bristles would engage the under side of the horn 28 and would prevent the filling thread from rising out ofthe passage 32.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
'1. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block mounted in a recess in the shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavity, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess and communicating with said longitudinal thread passage, a side delivery eye, and a filling trap for preventing the filling thread from rising upwardly out of said side delivery eye comprising a bundle of resilient fibres arranged to bend to permit the filling to enter the side delivery eye and arranged to prevent the filling thread from rising upwardly out of said side delivery eye.
2. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a. cavity therein for receiving a fillling carrier, a threading block having a longitudinally extending thread passage communicating with said cavity, said threading block being secured in a recess in said shuttle body and forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, a side delivery eye communicating with said lateral thread passage, and a filling trap in said passage comprising a bundle of fibres in said lateral passage and being free to bend to permit the filling thread to pass into the side delivery and preventing upward movement of the filling thread out of said lateral passage.
3. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavity, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, and a thread trap comprising a bunch of relatively stiff resilient fibres extending across said longitudinal passage and said lateral passage, said fibres being arranged to yield downwardly to permit said filling to enter said side delivery eye during threading of the shuttle and preventing said filling thread from rising upwardly out of said side delivery eye.
4. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavity, a side delivery eye, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess,
. and a filling trap comprising a bundle of relatively stiff resilient fibres extending forwardly, .outwardly and downwardly across the longitudinal thread passage and said lateral thread passage.
5. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavity, a side delivery eye, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, and a filling trap comprising a bundle of relatively stiff resilient fibres secured at one end tothe rear wall of the'threading block recess and 1 extending outwardly, forwardlyand downwardly across said longitudinal and said lateral thread passages.
6. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a
threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavity, a side delivery eye, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, a depending horn extending into said lateral thread passage, and a filling trap comprising a bundle of relatively stiff resilient fibres secured to the rear wall of the threading block recess and extending outwardly, forwardly and downwardly across said longitudinal and lateral passages and engaging said depending horn, said fibres being arranged to yield downwardly to permit the filling to pass between said fibres and said horn and into the side delivery eye during threading cf the shuttle.
'7. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating With said cavity, a side delivery eye, said threading blook forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, a horn extending downwardly from said threading block into said lateral thread passage, and a filling trap comprising a bundle of relatively stiff resilient fibres secured in an opening formed in the back wall of the threading block recess and extending outwardly, forwardly and downwardly across said longitudinal and lateral thread passages and bearing against said horn, said fibres being arranged to yield downwardly to permit the filling to pass between said fibres and said horn into the side delivery eye during threading of the shuttle and preventing the filling from rising upwardly out of said side delivery eye.
8. An automatically threading loom shuttle having in combination, a shuttle body having a cavity therein for receiving a filling carrier, a threading block secured in a recess in said shuttle body and having a longitudinal thread passage communicating with said cavit, a side delivery eye, said threading block forming a lateral thread passage with the outer end wall of said recess, a horn extending outwardly and rear wardly from said threading block over said longitudinal thread passage, a horn extending downwardly from said threading block into said lateral thread passage, and a filling trap comprising a bundle of relatively stifi resilient bristles secured in an opening formed in the back wall of the threading block recess and extending outwardly, forwardly and downwardly across said longitudinal thread passage, under said first men tioned horn, and across said lateral thread passage and bearing against said second mentioned horn, said bristles being arranged to yield downwardly to permit the filling to pass between the bristles and the second mentioned horn into the side delivery eye during threading of the shuttle and preventing the bristles from binding upwardly by engagement of the latter with the under surface of the first mentioned horn to prevent the filling from moving upwardly out of the side delivery eye and said lateral thread passage.
