Bo it known that I, JoNAs Non'rnnor, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Hopedale in the county of Worcester and o State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Self- Threading Shuttles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.-
lhis invention relates to anv improvement in self-threading shuttles for weft replenishing looms and more particularly to an 1o improvement in thread blocks for such shuttles.
The object ofa the invention is to produce a thread block of simple construction such that the self-threading of the shuttle may 2@ be accomplished in a positive manner, and that ballooning of the filling or thread may be prevented4 during the threading operation and further that after the shuttle has been threaded, the dethreading thereo will at be prevented 'llo the accomplishment o these objects, andeuch other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists 1n the 'unproved thread block for self-threadin 3o shuttles hereinafter described and claims lin the drawings which illustrate the referred embodiment of the'invention, i

The thread block 14.- is provided with the usual longitudinal thread passage 17 runnin the entire length of the block, and also wit the usual shield 18 overlapping the beak 19. The shield is provided with a downwardly inclined Hangs 20 which forms a guard, and serves the usual purpose of guiding the thread down to the beak from whence it is conducted in the usual manner to the delivery eye 13. A felt pad 29 acts as a drag upon the thread to maintain an even tension thereon.
The construction and functions of the parts thus far described are well known and form alone no part of this invention.
rllhe thread block 14. is provided at its inner end, that is at the end nearer the bob'- bin, with a hook-like guard 21 dispod in a vertical plane and extending transversely of the thread passage 17 and downwardly from the front wall of the block toward the rear wall thereof. The free end of the hooklikeguard 21 terminates slightly beyond the inner end-of the rear wall of the block, and in such proximity thereto that a narrow 22 is formed between the tip of the guard 21 and thel adjacent portion or the rear wall of the block.

pon the first pick of the shuttle after replenishment, the filling, unwinding from the bobbin, passes in a longitudinal direction over the top of the shuttle block 14, where it strikes the upper surface ot the vertically disposed guard 21, and is guided thereby downwardly and rearwardly toward and through the narrow inlet passage 22 into the vestibule 27. The filling or thread, at the same time, passes down over the beak 19, and upon the return pick of the shuttle passes intothe delivery eye 13 ot the shuttle in the usual manner. It will be observed therefore that the horizontal guard 23 forms and presents an appropriate bearing surface upon and over which the thread draws during the threading operation. The hook-like guard 21 serves in addition to its guiding function, to prevent the illing from escaping from the vestibule before the shuttle is completely threaded.
Upon the neXt pick of the shuttleaway from the hopper or replenishing mechanism, the illing or thread may pass through the narrow inlet 26 into the inner thread passage 28 (unless it has already entered this passage on the first pick) through which it normally runs to the delivery eye 13 as the shuttle is picked back and forth.
The invention has been illustrated as embodied in a shuttle adapted `for use in a lefthand loom and with a right-hand wind of bobbin. It is apparent that the direction of extension of the guards 21v and 23 will be reversed accordingly as the wind of bobbin,
or hand of loom is reversed.
As the ordinary shuttle is .picked from side to side across the lay with considerable velocity and force, and is stopped very suddenly in the shuttle box at the end of each pick, there is a tendency for the filling or thread as it unwinds from the bobbin to form at these times loops or bights therein, which are thrown torward over or towards the delivery end of the shuttle, and thereby often resulting in the dethreading oie-the shuttle. The horizontal guard member 23 serves to confine the filling or thread in its normal running position, that is, within the inner thread passage 28, and in this manner the formation oi' loops and bights in the illing thread made less objectionable and the delays and troubles incident to the ordinary dethreading of the shuttle are avoided, because the formation of loops or bights in that portion of the thread between the guard 23 and the delivery eye of the shuttle is prevented and it a loop is formed in that part of the thread between the bobbin 12 and the horizontal guard 23 it is necessary that it should be of length materially greater than that of the ordinary loop in order for the same to be thrown 'forward beyond the guard 18 and beak 19, so that in this manner the liability of any loops catching over the guard 18 or bea 19 and dethreading the shuttle is lessened.
The curved inner edge 32 of the' horizontal guard 23 serves to control the thread when looped and to lead the same away from the inlet 26 to maintain it in the central part of the thread passage, so that the liability of loops passing through the inlet 26 and around the horizontal guard 23 is ydecreased. If, however, a loop should pass around the guard 23, the tapered or wedge shape thereofwill cause the loop to run oil. thus effectively preventing dethreading at al1 times.
It will be observed, therefore, that the functions of the guard members 21 and 23 are as follows: The vertically disposed hooklike guard 21 serves as a guiding member to initially guide the thread into the vestibule and also to prevent the escape Iot the thread from the vestibule 27 during the threadingr operation and before the shuttle is completely threaded, while the horizontal fiat guard 23 serves to prevent dethreading after the shuttle has been completely threaded.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and illustrated but it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact form disclosed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A thread blocklfor self-threading shuttleshaving a longitudinal thread passage, means for guiding the thread to the delivery e e of the shuttle, a vertically disposed hoo like guard extended completely across the inner mouth of the thread passage and beyond the inner end of one wall thereof to form with said wall a narrow inlet to the thread assage.
2. A threa block for self-threading shuttles having a longitudinal thread passage, mea-ns for guiding the thread to the delivery eye of the shuttle, a guard subdividing a portion of the lthread passage and extending transversely thereof from one wall into a recess formed in the other wall of the thread passage and forming with the sides of the recess an inlet opening for the paage of the thread thereunder, and a second guard arranged above the first guard to prevent escape of the thread from the thread passage until it passes below the first named guar 3. A thread block for self-threading shuttles having a longitudinal thread passage, means for guiding the thread to the delivery eye of the shuttle, a guard extending transversely of the thread passage below the upper surface thereof and arranged to permit the thread to pass thereunder, and forming a bearing surface over which the thread draws from. the bobbin to the delivery eye While the shuttle is being threaded, and a hook-like guard arranged above said rst guard and extended from one Wall of the thread passage to a point beyond the second Wall thereof to prevent the escape of the thread from the thread passage While the thread is drawing over the said first guard.
