Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. Rrionnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and Fitate of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Automatically-Threading Shuttles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to automatically threading shuttles wherein the shuttle becomes threaded during the flight of the shut tle across the lay.
In shuttles of this general type, preliminary threading is usually effected on the first flight of the shuttle following replenislnnent, and on the following pick, the shuttle usually becomes fully threaded,
af er which devices carried by the shuttle itself have sought to prevent unthreading.
In that type of automatically threading shuttles shown and described in the patent to Edward S. Stimpson, No. 1,483,492, Feb. 12, 192 1, the automatically threading shuttle is provided with means whereby upon the formation of a loop or overthrow in the thread as the shuttle is arrested in the shuttle box, the thread may be cast from the threading devices and on the following pick be again threaded. Should an automatically threading shuttle however, fail to be threaded or partially threaded on the first pick following replenishment or an over throw of thread, there is danger that the thread may be broken on the following pick, by reason of the fact that it would lead backward from the end of the bobbin in the shuttle.
In the Stimpson patent to which reference has been made, the thread casting device has been provided with a thread guiding portion, which, should the shuttle not be fully threaded on the second pick following replenishment, or, an overthrow, the thread,
nevertheless, may pass into the control ofthe thread casting device, and breakage of the thread be. thereby prevented on the. return of the shuttle to the replenishing side of the loom.
- Should the thread, however, fail to pass into the control of the thread casting and guiding device on the first pick following replenishment or an overthrow, the thread would lead from the end of the bobbin in the shuttle backward to the cloth selvage on the following pick and be broken.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an automatically threading shuttle wherein the thread may be cast or thrown from the threading devices on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow, with means for taking control of the thread should it fail topass into the control of the thread casting and guiding device on the first pick following replenishment or an overthrow, so that on the following pick the thread may lead from the end of the bobbin over said means and breakage be thereby avoided.
In accordance with the present invention, the shuttle is provided with a thread casting and guiding device for casting or throwing the thread from the threading device on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow, and associated therewith is a thread controller for taking control of the thread should it failto pass into the control of the thread casting and guiding device, and maintain the thread in guiding relation with the bobbin, so that subsequent breakage of the thread will be avoided.
The invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the followlng description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof.

The shuttle 1 is provided with a bobbin chamber 2 in which is detachably held the filling carrier or bobbin 3 having the thread a wound thereon, as usual in filling replenishing shuttles.
At its frontward end the shuttle 1 is provided with a side delivery eye 1 from which the thread is delivered during normal weaving operations, and mounted in a chamber formed in the shuttle wood is the threading block 5 having a longitudinally extending thread passage 6, the side walls of which are shown as formed by the side portions 7 and 8 of the threading block. At the frontward end of the longitudinally extending thread passage is a bridge 9 over which the thread passes on its way to the side delivery eye, and frontward of the bridge and side delivery eye, the threading block is provided with a thread director 10, the end portion 11 of which extends transversely of the longitudinal thread passage and preferably underlies the wood 12 of the shuttle at this point, the construction being such that should the filling thread abe engaged below the thread director 11, it will be substantially impossible for the thread to escape from the director, even on the occurrence of an overthrow.
Mounted in the longitudinally extending thread passage is the thread casting and guiding device 13 which is herein shown as formed by a plate 14-, the base portion o1 which may be secured to the threading block, and the rear edge portion of which at 15 extends upwardly and then transversely, as at 16, in a downward and frontward direction as shown, the eiiect being that should the thread loop or overthrow as it is arrested in the shuttle box, it may be thrown upwardly by the thread casting and guiding device through the open top of the thread passage, substantially in this respect as in the Stimpson patent hereinbefore mentioned.
Under normal weaving operations following replenishment of filling or an overthrow, the thread a leading from the filling carrier or bobbin in the shuttle will engage in the longitudinally extending thread passage and by its swirling action will pass under control of the thread casting and guiding device 13, substantially as more fully described in the Stimpson patent. Should the thread a, however, fail to be engaged by the thread casting and guiding device on the pick of the shuttle following replenishment or after the shuttle has been partially or wholly unthreaded due to an overthrow, the thread is liable to lead backwardly from the end of the bobbin in the shuttle to the cloth selvage on the next pick of the shuttle and be broken.
To meet this last condition, which is sometimes observable in the use of some characters of yarn, as, for instance, when the yarn is of coarse count or kinky the present invention provides a controller, which, while not preventing unthreading on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow, will, nevertheless assist in threading, axe control ot the thread on the first pick following an even throw or replenishment in case the thread fails to be engaged by the thread casting device, and lead the thread trontwardly from the filling carrier or bobbin as the shuttle is picked towards the replenishing side oi the loom, and thereby prevent breakage.
In the present instance of the invention, the threading block 5 is to cast iron, the surfaces of which are covered with a rust-proof coating which does not obstruct the thread movement, substantially as more fully described in the Stimpson patent, No. 1,538,224, May 19, 1925, and extending transversely of the thread passage is the controller 17 formed or cast integral with the threading block. The controller 17, as shown in the present instance, is adjacent the bobbin chamber, that is, the thread casting and guiding device 13 is between the thread director 10 and the controller 17.
The controller 1'? has an upwardly extending portion at 18 which merges into a frontwardly and transversely extending portion 19 and extends across the thread passage, with the end 20 of the thread controller beyond the thread casting and guiding device 13.
As indicated more clearly in Figs. 3 and 1, the threading block wall at the side of the thread passage opposite the side delivery eye is inclined upwardly, as at 21, Fig. 3, and the end 20 of the controller 17 extends'across the thread passage to a point outward of the inner wall of the inclined portion 21., the result being that as the shuttle is picked following replenishment or an overthrow which has caused unthreading of the shuttle, either partially or wholly, the swirling action oi the thread will cause it to pass over the rounded laterally and frontwardly extending portions of the controller under the end 20 thereof, from which position it cannot escape, owing to the overlap of the end 20 of the controller, as indicated in Fig. Ordinarily, also, the thread will pass into control of the thread casting and guiding device and will be assisted in this by the controller, but it the character oi? the thread be such that this fails to take place, the thread will nevertheless pass about the thread controller 17 below the end thereof, and on the next pick the shuttle towards the filling replenishing side 01 the loom, the thread will lead about the controller 17, as indicated in Fig. 2, so that it will not be broken on that pick.
The formation of the controller 17 is such that while it does not prevent threa-d casting on the formation of a loop or overthrow, it will engage the thread and act as a leader thereof, even though the thread itself fails to pass into control of the thread casting and guiding device on the first pick following replenishment or an overthrow. The forwardly and downwardly extending end portion of the controller towards the point 20 is such that its forward surface provides a. guide 22 about which the filling thread may pass and be held as a guide under the conditions hereinbefore described.
It has hereinbetore been noted that the threading block as herein shown and described, and in accordance with the present invention, is preferably formed of cast iron, and owing to the character and contour of the controller 17, the latter may be cast integral with the cast iron block, it being understood that in such case the thread engaging portions of the block will be covered by a rust-proof, substantially trictionless material that will not obstruct the free movement of the thread.
The block may be secured in the block chamber of the shuttle by any suitable means, and as herein shown, the threading block is provided with an aperture or open ing 23 through which may be extended the cross-bolt 24:.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread casting and guiding device in the thread passage constructed and arranged to cast the thread upwardly through the open top of the passage on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow as the shuttle is arrested in the shuttle box and an additional thread controller nearer the bobbin chamber than said thread casting and guiding device and extended laterally beyond the thread casting and guiding device to take control of and lead the thread in case it fails to be engaged by the thread casting and guiding device on a pick of the shuttle following an overthrow and consequent partial or complete unthreading.
2. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread casting and guiding device constructed and arranged to cast the thread upwardly through the open top of the passage on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow, and an additional thread controller having its end extended laterally ot the longitudinal thread passage to retain and lead the thread on the second pick following an overthrow and consequent partial or complete unthreading in case the thread fails to pass into control of the thread casting and guiding device on the previous pick of the shuttle.
3. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread casting and guiding device constructed and arranged to cast the thread upwardly through the open top of the passage on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow. and an additional thread controller extending upwardly, laterally and frontwardly with its end laterally beyond the casting and guiding device to retain and lead the thread in case the thread casting and guiding device fails to do so when the shuttle is picked while partially or wholly unthreaded.
4-. In an automatically threading shuttle for looms having a side delivery eye,
the combination of a threading block having alongitudinally extending thread passage, a thread casting and guiding device in the thread passage, and an additional thread cont-roller adjacent the bobbin chainher and having its end extending across the thread passage at the rear 01" the thread casting and guiding device and provided with a thread guiding portion over which the thread may lead when the shuttle is picked in case the thread casting and guiding device has failed to take control of the thread on the previous pick.
5. A threading block for automatically threading loom shuttles having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread director at the front of thethread passage, a thread controller or finger at the rear of the thread passage formed integral with the block and extending transversely of the thread passage, and a thread casting device in the thread passage between the thread director and thread controller.
6. In an automatically threading shuttle for looms having a side delivery eye and a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread director frontward of the side delivery eye, a thread casting device in the longitudinally extending thread passage constructed "and arranged to cast the thread on the occurence of a loop or overthrow and again take control of the thread as the shuttle is picked, and an additional thread controller in the longitudinal thread passage extending transversely thereof and constructed and arranged to take control of the thread should the thread casting device fail to do so on a pick of the shuttle following an overthrown or replenishment.
7. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a side delivery eye, a threading block having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread director trontward of the side delivery eye extending transversely of the thread passage, a thread controller extending transversely of the thread passage rearward of the side delivery eye, and a thread casting and guiding device in the longitudinally extendiaig thread pass sage between the thread director and thread controller.
8. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a side delivery eye, a threading block having a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread director trontward of the side delivery eye extending transversely of the thread passage, a thread controller or finger extending transversely of the thread passage rearward of the side delivery eye, and a thread casting and guiding device in the longitudinally extending thread passage between the thread director and thread controller.
9. An automatically threading loom shuttle having a side delivery eye and a longitudinally extending thread passage, a thread guiding scroll in the longitudinally extending thread passage, and a thread controller or finger extending laterally of the passage adjacent the bobbin chamber and having its edge next to the bobbin chamber extending upwardly, laterally, and forwardly of the longitudinal thread passage to cast the thread on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow as the shuttle is arrested in the shuttle box.
10. An automatically threading 100111 shuttle having a side delivery eye and a longitudinally extending thread passage, :1 thread guiding scroll in the longitudinally extending thread passage, and a thread controller or finger extending laterally of the passage adjacent the bobbin chamber and having its edge next to the bobbin chamber extending upwardly, laterally, and forwardly of the longitudinal thread passage to cast the thread on the occurrence of a loop or overthrow as the shuttle is arrested in the shuttle box, the forward edge portion of the controller being formed to act as a guide for the thread as the shuttle is picked towards the replenishing side of the looxn when the shuttle is partially unthreaded.
