State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bobbin- Sniash Preventers for Looms, of which the following is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is designed for application to looms of the class in which weft-replenishment is effected automatically through replacement of the spent filling-carrier or bobbin occupying the working shuttle on the lay by a fresh filling-carrier orbobbin.

The object of my invention is to provide in improved manner for preventing bobbin-smashes, so-called, such as have happened frequently in practice heretofore in such automatic weft-replenishing loo-ms when for some reason the tip of a bobbin occupying the shuttle projects below the underside of the shuttle-body. When the bobbin-tip drops and projects in this manner, instead of being completely housed within the shuttle, engagement thereof with the warp-threads over which the shuttle slides in its movement from one side of the loom to the other results in breakage of such warp-threads, often with comparative- 1y disastrous results.
My invention consists .in a bobbin-smash preventer for looms comprising a lay-beam having a longitudinal bobbin-tip-receiving trough or depression in the shuttle-race, and a vertical shoulder adjacent the shuttleboX mouth adapted through engagement with the end of said tip, when depressed, to arrest the shuttle when leaving the box.

The lay-beam of a loom is shown at l, 1, with its central portion broken away for COllVtEDlEDCG in illustrating; 2. 2, are the front-plates of the shuttle-boxes at the two ends of the lay; 3, are the lips projecting forwardly from the shuttle-box backs and constituting the tops of the shuttle-boxes; 4. t. are the picker-sticks at the opposite ends of the lay; and 5, 5, are the pickers carried by the said picker-sticks. A shut-tle 6 is shown at the mouth of the shuttle-box at one end of the lay, with a filling-carrier or bobbin 7 in connection with said shuttle having thereon a full load of wet or filling. This filling-carrier or bobbin 7 is illustrated, with its tip in the depressed position which leads to the damage to the warp-threads which is known as abobbin-smash, that is to say, thetip of the filling-carrier is shown dependingbelow the level of the under side of the shuttle 6 in such position that if the shuttle should pass through a shed in the warp-threads with the bobbin-tip in such position the said tip would engage and break thewarp-threads over which the shuttle slides in its movement from the left-hand side of the loom in Figs. 1 and 2 to the righthandside. The filling carrier or bobbin 7 may assume this position from any one of several causes, such as failure of the trans ferrer mechanism to position the filling-carrier correctly in the shuttle at the time of weft-replenishment, or weakness of the spring- jaws 8, 8, of the shuttle and consequent inability of the said jaws to hold the filling-carrier 7 in its correct position en tirely housed within the shuttle 6 In accordance with my invention, I utilize one side-wall of a slot 9 formed in the shuttle-race on the lay as a stop which through engagement with a downwardly projecting bobbin-tip will prevent entrance of the shuttle into a shed in the warps in the direction of movement of the shuttle which carries the bobbin tip foremost. For this purpose, the weft-fork slot, shown at 9, usually provided in the lay-beam, extending across the shuttle race from front to rear may advantageously be utilized, as indicated in the drawings; or a special slot or shoulder may be provided in the shuttle-race for the contemplated purpose. In order to enable the wall or shoulder of the said slot to be thus utilized, {form in the portion of the shuttlerace which is located within the shuttle-boa adj'ac'ent such slot a longitudinal trough or depression 10 adapted to admit a bobbin-tip which tends to project below the lower side of the shuttle-body 6 in case the bobbin, as described above, should not be held properly within the shuttle. This trough or depression 10 permits the. bobbin-tip to hang down far enough, before arriving at the slot across the shuttle-race, to strike against the inner side-wall of the said slot, so as thereby to lock the shuttle from further movement toward the opposite side of the loom and hence into the shed formed in the warps. In case of the employment of a lay in which the shuttle-race is constituted by the upper surface of a wooden lay-beam, the side-wall against which the bobbin-tip is designed to strike will be constituted by a protecting plate of metal 91 or other suitable material, preferably L-shaped to fit the angle at the side of the slot, and having a horizontal upper portion that is let into a recess formed in the top surface of the lay-beam 1 alongside the slot 9. Preferably, also, the trough or depression 10 will be formed in a metal plate fixed upon the shuttlerace outwardly of the said slot 9 and formed integral with a strip which surrounds the end portion of the lay-beam; though in its simplest form my invention will comprise merely the crosswise slot 9 and the longitudinal trough or depression 10 both out directly in the wood of the lay-beam.
What I claim is,-
1. In a loom, a bobbin-smash preventer comprising a lay-beam having a longitudinal bobbin-tip-receiving trough or depres sion in the shuttle-race, and a vertical shoulder adjacent the shuttle-box mouth adapted through engagement with a depressed bob bin-tip to arrest the shuttle when leaving the shuttle-box.
2. In a loom, a bobbin-smash preventer comprising a lay-bearn having a longitudinal bobbin-tip-receiving trough or depression in the shuttle-race, and a vertical shoulder constituted by one side-wall of a slot or recess crossing the lay-beam adjacent the shuttle-box month, said shoulder adapted through engagement with a depressed bobbin-tip to arrest the shuttle when leaving the shuttle-box.
3. In a loom, a bobbin-s1nasl1 pi'eventer comprising a lay-beam having a transverse weft-fork slot, and also having a longitudinal bobbin-tipmeceiving trough or depression in the shuttle-race adapted to accommodate the depressed tip of a bobbin occupying the working shuttle and to permit the said tip to encounter the inner side-wall of the weft-fork slot so as thereby to arrest the movement of the shuttle inward from the shuttle-box.
