- This invention relates to apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarn, the apparatus being of the typ wherein a sliver or roving is drafted between a pair of endless bandsarranged around the middle pair of rollers of the spinning frame, pressure being applied to the drawing rollers by means of a saddle mechanism which is connected to a spring operated lever mechanism mounted upon a fixed part of the apparatus and so arranged that by raising the saddle mechanism, the pressure action of the spring is removed from the drawing rollers and exerted in a direction such as to retain the saddle mechanism in its raised position, the loading being restored to said rollers when the pressure saddle is lowered again.
- the invention consists in an apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarns of the type above referred to, in which the upper and lower endless bands arranged around the middle pair of drawing rollers are provided at their forward ends, at a point between the middle and front pairs of rollers, with a pair of tensors which are slidably mounted within recesses formed in the cap bars, the upper tensor being resiliently mounted so as to be capable of movement towards and away from the lower tensor within the said slots, thereby to apply a yielding pressure to the slivers or rovings.

- the frame at one end forms an arm having an inwardly projecting portion 35 which serves as a support and a pivot for one of a pair of caps 36 which telescopically engage one another to form a cylinder within which is located a compression spring 31 which tends to force the two caps apart and acts in substitution for the usual weight for the purpose of loading the drawing mechanism.

- a spring 44 which flats over the said pin so as to rest at its lower end upon the top of said upper tensor.
- the recesses l2 in which the top and bottom tensors are slidably mounted may be given a slight inclination from their upper to their lower ends in a direction away from the plane passing through the axes of the middle rollers, so that a tensioning of the upper and lower pairs of endless bands takes place as the said tensors are pressed downwardly in their recesses under the pressure of the spring saddle mechanism. Should greater tensioning be required than that aliorded by the inclination of the slots, then the middle blocks 8a of the cap bars may be adjusted along their associated rods 80 by means of set screws 8d until the required tensioning is obtained.
- both sets are arranged vertically one behind the other each prong Mb in the front row being connected to a corresponding prong 48 in the back row so as. to form a series oi inverted U-shaped brackets which are adapted to fit over the lower middle drawing roller.
- Each bracket is provided at its upper end with a horizontal projecting arm 48 which is slotted at 50 and engages a pin 5i projecting from each of the vertical limbs of the bracket portions 22b which form the guides for the bands and are suitably slotted at 52 to permit sliding movement of the arms 48.
- the prongs 24b and 48 are permitted to'move backwards and forwards in unison with any similar movement imparted to the lower middle roller or to the blocks 8a to maintain the required tension of the bands 25 and 26.
- the upper tensor in ca ch modification has been fitted with prongs such as 24, 24a, 24b in order to guide the endless belts 25, 26, but no prongs were fitted to the lower tensor, but a' modification will now be described in which the reverse arrangement, i. e., prongs are fitted to the lower tensor and this is used with an upper tensor such as that shown in Figure 9 of my prior patent specification No. 2,209,573 in which no prongs are used.
- the lower tensor comprises a vertical frame 53 stamped or otherwise formed from a flat top bar 54, so as to constitute a pair of somewhat deep U-shaped sockets 55 depending from the bar 54 and spaced apart at a distance corresponding to sockets 58 of more even and stronger yarn. Also by the resilient mounting of the upper tensor l3 such adjustment of the upper pair of bands is possible without interfering with the normal pressure of the saddle mechanism upon the drawing rollers.
- bracket portions also serve as additional guides for the stretches of the upper and lower bands.
- a forked ex tension 58 comprising a pair of prongs 59 which are somewhat obliquely arranged to the plane containing the sockets, the prongs being adapted to engage with, and fit partly around, the reduced neck portion of the lower roller 3 of the middle pair of drawing rollers 3 and 6, and project radially for a sufficient distance to form side guides for the endless bands 25 and 2B, and keep them in position, as shown in Figure 19A.
- each U-shaped socket 55 is adapted to be closed or bridged by a short closer bar 50 formed with spigot ends iii to engage with slots 62 formed partly in the fiat top bar 54, and partly in the upper part of each side limb of each U-shaped socket 55.
- These slots are of such a depth that when the closer bars are in position such closer plates will lie somewhat below the level of the top bar of the lower tensor.
- Such closer bars 60 each essentially constitute the lower tensor, and as seen in the sectional view in Figure 19A the lower endless band 26 of each pair of endless bands is passed round the forward edge, and for which purpose the edge is rounded to afford easy movement to the band. Its back edge may be similarly rounded so as to make the tensor interchangeable.
- the upper tensor 51 comprises a bar in which a pair of sockets 56 are formed.
- the edge at the bottom of each socket is rounded as shown at 63 in Figure 19A and around the forward side of which the upper endless belt 25 passes, sufllcient space being left between the partlloftheuppertensorandthepartllof the lower tensor to receive the sliver or roving which is to be treated

- the lower tensor including a U-shaped bracket portion having vertical limbs, one of the limbs having a hole and the other limb having a recess open at its upper end, and a roller mounted at one end in said hole and engaged at its other end in said rece the upper surface of said roller being disposed slightly below the top surface of the lower tensor.
- An apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarns comprising front, middle and back pairs of upper and lower drawing rollers, a support for the lower rollers, cap bars engaged by the upper rollers and having slots therein, upper and lower endless bands engaging the upper and lower middle rollers.
- each prong in the front row being con-- nected to a corresponding prong in the back row to form a series of inverted U-shaped brackets fitting over the lower middle roller.
- An apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarns comprising front, middle and back pairs of upper and lower drawing rollers, a support for the lower rollers, cap bars engaged by the upper rollers and having slots therein, upper and lower endless bands engaging the upper and lower middle rollers, a saddle mechanism for applying pressure to said rollers, a lower tensor mounted in said slots and engaged by the lower band, a spring pressed upper tensor engaged by the upper band, two rows of vertically disposed prongs provided on the upper tensor arranged one behind the other, each prong in the front row being connected to a corresponding prong in the back row to form a series of inverted U-shaped brackets fitting over the lower middle roller, the brackets being adjustably mounted upon the upper tensor.
- An apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarns comprising front, middle and back pairs of upper and lower drawing rollers, a support for the lower rollers, cap bars engaged by the upper rollers and having slots therein, upper and lower endless bands engaging the upper and lower middle rollers, a saddle mechanism for applying pressure to said rollers, a lower-tensor mounted in said slots and engaged by the lower band, a spring pressed upper tensor engaged by the upper band, prongs provided on the lower tensor engaging the lower roller of the middle pair and forming side guides for the endless bands, said lower tensor being used in connection with an upepr tenso 'not provided with prongs.
- An apparatus for drafting cotton slivers or rovings for the production of spun yarns comprising front, middle and back pairs of upper and lower drawing rollers, a support for the lower rollers, cap bars engaged by the upper rollers and having slots therein, upper and lower endless coacting with the upper roller of the middle pair for tensioning the upper endless band.
