The :invention relates to a dispensing box for enclosing and supporting a roll of sheet material.
`The box is particularly designed for holding a tubular shaft. Each projecting end of the shaft is supported upon a bearing within the box and the cover of the box carries a tab which slips in.- side of the box between the end wall and the bearing member, whereby the latter is prevented from shifting to the end of the shaft which would tend to release the shaft from the bearing.`
Another object of the invention is to construct a box for a roll of sheet material mounted upon a'shaftv in which locking tabs are providedhwhich carry means so that a pair of tabs interengage f by relative vertical movement of one with respect to the other or movement of both with respect to each other to thereby hold the front wall and rear wall of the box in spaced relation and in which an end member folds over the locking tabs and secures them against disengagement. The end member, in addition, carries` a portion which is bent upwardly within the box and is provided with a shaft-receiving hole or bearing.
Another object of the invention is to construct a box for a roll of sheet material which Ais mounted upon a cylindrical or tubular shaft, each end of which extends from the roll. An end member is provided which goes over the end of the box and downwardly inside and towards the bottom of the boxand then extends upwardly again. The upwardly extending portion carries a bearing, such as a hole, for supporting a projecting end of the shaft. The cover has a bearing tab at each end thereof which performs a double function, namely, first, passes within the box between the upwardly bent bearing portion and the end of the box so that the upwardly extending portion with its bearing cannot ride loif of the end `oi the shaft and release the roll, and,
secondly, bears upon the projecting end of the shaft to aid in holding the roll down in the box against the upward pull exerted by anyone removing a desired length of sheet material from the box. f

Thebottom l0 has anend member 20 attached to eachend edge thereof. This lend member includes 'an outside end wall 2| and a downwardly extendingportion 212 which folds over the locking tabs particularly shown Qand prevents their vertical disengagement; "This purpose is'accomplished,
however, only when 'locking means requiring vertical interengagementis used. 'In other words, the-endA wall 2l and the downwardly extending portion constitute 4means which prevents `disening portion 22 and the upwardly extending porp tion 23 are separated by a spacer 24, although this is not essential. Preferably too, the spacer lies along the bottom of the box. Each upwardly extending portion is provided with a shaft bearing or hole 25 which receives the end of the cylindrical or tubular shaft 35 which carries the roll 34 of sheet material, as will be described hereinafter.
A cover 28 is attached to the rear wall I2 and carries a closing leaf 29. Each end of the cover 28 carries a cover tab 3B which preferably is provided with a bearing means 3| in which case this part is a bearing tab. The bearing means is shown as a circular edge having a radius Corresponding approximately with that of the shaft. Any suitable form of bearing means is contemplated.
The roll 34 of sheet material, such as tin foil, is mounted upon the cylindrical shaft 35 which projects beyond each end of the roll of sheet material. The shaft approximates in length the inside length of the box and provides just about sufficient space at the end of the shaft so' that after one end is inserted in one hole 25, the other end of the shaft may be inserted in its respective shaft bearing or hole.
The box is formed by bending the front wall I I vertically with respect to the bottom I0 along a bending axis 4l).V The rear wall I2 is also folded vertically by bending the same along a bending axis 4I. In raising 'the front and rear walls, the pair of locking tabs I3 and I5 at each end are bent along `their respective bending axes 45 and 46 and interengage through their respective slots I4 and I5 which anchor the tabs against lateral separation and secure the front and rear walls in spaced relation. Each end member is then bent along a bending axis 4I so that each outside end wall 2I extends vertically outside of the box and the downwardly extending portion 23 is bent over the locking tabs or the end of the box along a bending axis 43. It will be observed that the folded over outside end wall 2| and downwardly extending portion 22 form a lock which prevents vertical separation of its respective pair of locking tabs I3 and I5. The spacer 24 is bent along an axis 41 so that it extends along or adjacent the bottom I0 and the upwardly extending portion 23 is bent along an axis 48 so that it extends upwardly.`
The roll 34 of sheet material is then placed in the box with one end of the shaft 35 extending through one shaft bearing or hole and the other end of the shaftvis inserted in the other shaftbearing or hole by pressing the upwardly extending portion 23 close to the wall of the box. Itwill be observed that cthe spacer 24 has a dimension approximating in length the length of the protruding end of the shaft. The cover is then bent over the top of the box along a bending axis 44 and each bearing tab is bent along an axis 49 and inserted between its respective downwardly extending portion 22 and upwardly extending portion 23. This prevents each upwardly extending portion 23 from being displaced outwardly, or toward the end of the shaft, whereby the shaft cannot be removed from the bearing or hole 25 either inadvertently or when withdrawing foil from the roll. The bearing means 3| on the bearing tab 30 engages the end of the shaft and holds the shaft in position, or if the shaft bearing 25 is a hole, as particularly illustrated, it then assists the hole in holding the shaft in position in the box. The bearing tab 30 therefore serves two functions as enumerated. The closing leaf 29 is bent along an axis 50 and fits within the front wall I I, and the end of the roll of sheet material may be projected out of the box in the slot between the closing leaf and the front wall.
Where a spacer 24 is provided, it should preferably approximate in width the length of the end of the shaft which projects from the roll of sheet material. This spacer aids in preventing endwise displacement of the upwardly extending portion 23 so that it will not tend to ride towards the end of the shaft.
As a matter of fact, if the material of the box is stiff enough, the bearing tab 30 constitutes a definite lock to prevent sidewise displacement of the upwardly extending portion 23 so that it cannot be shifted or ride to the end of the shaft and release the end of the shaft from the hole 25.
This invention provides an improvement in a dispensing box for sheet material. It is understood that various modifications in structure, as well as changes in mode of operation, assembly, and manner of use, may and often do occur to those skilled in the art, especially after beneting from the teachings of an invention. This disclosure illustrates the preferred means of embodying the invention in useful form.
What is claimed is:
1. A box formed 4of folded material, and adapted to rotatably support a roll of foil, paper or the like mounted upon a cylindrical shaft which shaft extends beyond each end of the roll and has a length closely approximating the inside length of the box, comprising a bottom, a front wall and a rear wall attached to the front edge and rear edge respectively of the bottom, means securing the front wall and the rear wall in spaced relation, an end member attached to each end edge of the bottom and folding over the securing means, each end member having a downwardly projected portion extending towards the bottom within the box, a portion attached to and extending upwardly from each downwardly extending portion and having a shaft receiving hole therein, a cover attached to the rear wall, and a tab on each end of the cover pro- Jecting between the downwardly extending portion and upwardly extending portion to prevent the upwardly extending portion with its shaft receiving bearing from riding 01T of the end of the shaft.
2. A box formed of folded material, and adapted to rotatably support a roll of foil, paper or the like mounted upon a cylindrical shaft which shaft extends beyond each end of the roll, comprising a bottom, a front wall and a rear wall attached to the front edge and rear edge respectively of the bottom, means securing the front wall and the rear wall in spaced relation, an end member attached to each end edge of the bottom and folding over the securing means,
each end member having a downwardly projected portion extending towards the bottom within the box and having a portion extending upwardly therefrom, a shaft receiving bearing in each upwardly extending portion, a cover at,-
tached to the rear wall, and a bearing tab on each end of the cover having a bearing surface in the edge thereof adapted to prevent'upward movement of the'shaft and projecting between the downwardly extending portion and upwardly extending portion to prevent the upwardly extending portion with its shaft receiving'bearing from riding off of the end ofthe shaft.
3. A box formed of folded material, andadapted to rotatably support a roll of foil, `paper or the like mounted upon a cylindrical shaft which shaft extends beyond each end of the roll, comprising a bottom, a front wall and rear wall attached to the front edge and rear edge of the bottom, respectively, a locking tab extending from each end edge lof thev front wall and rear wall, locking means upon each tab interengageable with the locking means upon its adjacent tab to lock the tabs against separation as well as to secure the front wall and rear wall in spaced relation, an end member attached to each end edge of the bottom and folding over the locking tabs, eachV end member having a downwardly projected portion extending within the box towards the bottom, a portion attached to and extending upwardly from the downwardly projected portion and having a shaft receiving bearing, a cover attached tothe rearwall, and a bearing tab on each end of the cover having a bearing surface in the edge thereof adapted` to prevent upward movement of the shaft and projecting between the 'downwardly extending portion and upwardly extending portiony to prevent the upwardly extending portion Vand its shaft receiving bearing from riding off of the end of the shaft. v
