WILLIAM T. LAZAB, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
mrEnLnAvEn rune-rowan rncxner;
Specification of Letters latent. I
Patented Feb. 12,1918.
Application filed August 27, 1914. Serial No. 858,944.:
To all whom it may concern Beit known that 1, WILLIAM T. LAzAna citizen of the United States, residing in t e city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Interleaved Paper- Towel Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to interleaved paper towel packages and the like wherein the paper towels are interleaved and folded in such a manner that a single thickness of the lowermost towel projects from a container provided for dispensing the same; and the objects of my invention are first, to provide an improved interleaved and double folded paper towel package having a single thickness projecting from the container provided for the purpose; second, to provide improved means for facilitatin the unfolding of the towel after being wit drawn from the container; third, to provide an improved package of the character described wherein the withdrawal of one towel from a container will cause a single edge or end of the next towel to be projected from the said container; and fourth, to provide an improved folded and interleaved paper towel package whose horizontal depth shall be comparatively small so as to require but a small space for the container from which the towels are dispensed.
I accomplish these several features by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming art of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts through out the said'specification and drawings and in which- Figure '1 is a broken vertical sectional view of a container disclosing a package of interleaved paper towels therein and a single thickness of the lowermost towel proecting therefrom. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of several towels partly opened out for purposes of better illustration, disclosing the manner in which each towel is folded to cause one end thereof to project beyond theother.
Fig. 3 is an enlargedperspective view of my improved interleaved paper package disclosing the manner in which the towels are interleaved and folded so that one edge .of each towel projects beyond the other edge of the same towel.
The present state of the art iscloses various interleaved andfolded paper packages folded and formed in such a manner that the withdrawal of one towel from a suitable container will ,withdraw a fold of the next towel and leave the end thereof projecting from the said container. These packages are "interleaved and folded in various ways for various purposes but the initial fold is ona. median line so that the two edges of the sheet will coincide. The disadvantage of this method is that after the folded sheet has been withdrawn the difficulty is presented of unfolding the towel or sheet. his unfolding is a serious disadvantage as the hands of the operator are usually wet, which will further impede the process of unfolding the towel for use.
I propose to provide a sheet folded off of a median line so that the lower edge thereof will extend beyond the top'edge and a single sheet or thicknes will pro ect from the container and thereby bepresented to the user, in a manner that will facilitate the unfolding process after the towel has been withdrawn from the-said container.
Referring to the drawings, a single sheet is first folded off of the median line, as at 2, so that the sheet will be folded into a top short leaf 3 and a bottom long leaf 4, thereby providing. a single thickness projecting beyond the shorter leaf 3, as disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.
The double sheet is again folded, as'at 6, which point is approximately midway between the initial fold 2 and the edgeof the longer leaf 4. The resultlwillbe a double foldedsheet wherein one edge will bereceded within the folded sheet, leaving the longer leaf 4 on the outside or bottom of the folded sheet, as disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
A number of'such folded sheets are then interleaved with that portion of the sheet adjacent the single fold 2 of the lower folded sheet resting above the free ends of the next folded-sheet so that the said single fold 2 will lie inside of and adjacent to the double fold 6, and with the edge of the long leaf 4 on the bottom of the fold, as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The double folded sheets are interleaved so that the edge of the longer leaf 4 will always be at the bottom of the said folded sheets, which will provide an interleaved package, as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When the package is placed in a suitable container 8, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be observedthat a single leaf 4 of the lower folded sheet will project from the said container. The towel may be easily removed by. grasping this single sheet 4 and pulling it from the container, which will cause the portion of the double folded sheet adjacent to the single fold 2 to engage and project, through the slot of the container 8, the free endor edge of the longer leaf 4 on the bottom of the, next double folded sheet-within the said container.
After a sheethas been withdrawn from the container in the above described manner the operator or user will be holding a single thickness of the towel. It will then be a comparatively simple matter to unfold the remaining folded portion of the sheet and the towel will be ready for use.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved interleaved double folded paper towel package wherein a single leaf or thickness will always be presented or projected from the container, and the process of unfolding the towel will thereby be greatly facilitated.
I am aware that the present state of the art discloses interleaved paper towel packages wherein the withdrawal of one sheet will cause the end of the next folded sheet to project from a container, therefore, I do not claim, as my invention, such a combination broadly, but what I do claim as new and novel and desireto secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. An interleaved pa er towel package comprising double folde sheets having one free edge extended beyond the other free edge thereof.
2. An interleaved paper towel package comprising sheets folded off of a median line, said folded sheet being also folded on a line parallel with the first fold, that por tion of the sheet adjacent to the first mentioned fold being interleaved with the next folded sheet.
3. An interleaved paper towel package comprising sheets folded off of a median line so that the lower edge will extend beyond the upper edge of the said folded sheet, said folded sheet being also folded on a line midway between the first mentioned fold and the extended edge, with the said extended edge on the-bottom, that portion of the sheet adjacent the first mentioned fold being interleaved with the next sheet above it.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my signature in the witnesses.
