To all whom it may concem:

Be it known that I, LELAND J. ARMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Starting Device for Packed Folded Paper, of which the following is a specification. v

The present invention relates to a starting device for packed folded paper and has particular reference to folded tissue toilet paper such as is commonly used in lavatories. Paper of this character is usually handled in stacks of units folded once or twice, each unit being interlocked with the next succeeding unit and the stack being usually mounted in a container provided with a slot in the bottom thereof through whichthe units may be successively withdrawn, the interfolded relation between the units being such that the withdrawal of one unit causes the end of the next succeeding unit to project through the slot. While thus each unit on its withdrawal starts the next succeeding unit. no 25 means is ordinarily provided for starting the first unit of a stack and it is. proposed in the present invention to provide a convenient means for this purpose. I

While I have shown only the preferred form of the inventions I wish to have it understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claim hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The units (1) of paper shown in Figure 4 and throughout the drawing are presented as double layers of tissue paper, each unit being folded twice in the manner illustrated; It, of course, does not-make any difference for the purpose of my invention whether. the units are folded once only or more often.

A stack (2) of these units is shown in Fig- 55 ures 2 and 3 as being packed in a carton (3) struction, which latter is provided with aGQ corresponding slot (7 in the bottom and 7 with lips (8) depending'cfrom the edges of the slot for guiding the'paper units. The container as well as the carton are preferably formed with recesses (9) in the side walls at either end of the slot to facilitate the withdrawal of the paper units;

My starting device com rises a simple piece ofv string or tape (11 which may be formed of any suitable material glued or otherwise attached to a sheet (12) of flexible material'preferably paper, and is introduced into the lowermost fold of the stack in a manner illustrated in the various figures, particularly in Figure 4, preferabl so that the string or tape is disposed a ove the sheet (12). The latter sheet is preferably made of the same size as the fold of the paper so as to conveniently fit into the stack without projecting outside of the same, while so thetapeor string (11) is sufiiciently long to project at one or both ends over the side edges of the stack so that either end of the same may be-conveniently taken hold of by the operator. It will be seen that when the operator pulls downwardly on the string the latter will be pulled through the slot in the carton and the slot in the container, and will thereby force the lowermost end of the bottom unit through the slot so that the same may be conveniently gripped for the purpose of withdrawing the same. It will be noted that the sheet (12) serves to position the string and the latter is preferably placed to be immediately above the slot and substantially on the center line of the stack provided, of course, the slot'happens to be on the center line. The sheet (12) serves the further purpose of offering resistance to longitudinal motion of the string so that the latter will not move endwise' when pulled downwardly which would defeat the object of the'present invention. 1

To use my vdevice the same is inserted in the lowermost fold before the stack is placed into the carton in the manner shown in Figure 4 with the two ends of the string (11) projecting outwardly and to start the stack it is only necessary to pull on the string (11) which will force the sheet (12) and with it the free end of the lowermost paper unit through the slot.

There the stack is held in an ordinary Wrapper as showninFigure 5 my device may be used for the same purpose.

. I claim:

A starting device for packed folded paper of the character described, consisting of an 1 unfolded sheet superimposed on the lowermost leaf of the package and having operating projections extending over the side edges of the package in central relation thereto and allowing the end of the leaf to be drawn through a centrally disposed slot below the leaf by manipulation of the said projections.
