(Cl. 20647) This invention relates to cartons or containers and more particularly to a portable container especially adapted for the display and storage of wrappings and ribbons for the packaging of gift articles.
More particularly, the principal object of the invention is to provide a novel type of container, preferably constructed of paperboard material, which includes a pair of hingedly connected hollow sections for the reception of rolls of paper gift wrappings as well as reels of ribbons, the arrangement being such that when the sections are open, the contents present an attractive colored display. The hinged arrangement of the sections or compartments is moreover such that they may be closed, in the manner of the conventional suitcase, and a suitable handle construction may be provided for convenience in carrying the container. The construction is especially adapted for the display and storage of Christmas or other holiday wrappings and ribbons and the invention is such that desired quantities of paper and ribbon may be withdrawn from the supply rolls or reels without the necessity of removing the rolls or reels from the container.
Another object is to provide in a container of the above character, a novel blank of paperboard material which is cut and scored in such a manner that the blank may be readily folded into position to provide hingedly connected compartments or sections for the display and storage of rolls of wrapping paper as well as fold sheets of wrapping and reels of ribbons.
A further object is to provide a container of the foregoing type wherein opposite sidewalls are so constructed as to provide paperboard supports for the ends of the paper rolls to enable rotation of the latter as the desired lengths are cut off.
A still further object resides in the provision of holes or openings in opposite sides of a compartment for receiving dowels or rods on Which the ribbon reels are rotatably mounted.
Another object is to provide a novel container which is constructed of paperboard material and is then capable of ready manufacture at a relatively low cost.
The above and other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter from a description of the invention when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. It will be understood however that the drawings are utilized for purposes of illustration only and are not designed as a definition of the limits of the invention, reference being had for this purpose to the appended claim.
Referring now to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a paperboard blank construction in accordance with the principles of the present invention;

Referring more particularly to FIG. 1, the blank of the present invention comprises a pair of base panels 10 and 12 which are hingedly connected to each other by score lines 14, 16 and 18, the arrangement being such that the base panels 10 and 12 when folded, in a manner to be more fully described hereinafter form a pair of compartments 20 and 21, see FIG. 2, for the reception and storage of paper wrappings and reels of ribbons.
Base panel 10 is provided at one side with a side panel 22 and is provided at the opposite side with a side panel 24, such side panel being hingedly connected to the base panel 10 by means of respective score lines 26 and 27. Side panel 22 is formed of a pair of panels 28 and 30 which are hingedly connected by a double score line 32, the arrangement being such that when panel 30 is folded over panel 28 and the two panels folded at right angles to the base panel 10, locking tabs 32 and 34 may be respectively received within slots 36 and 38 to form a sidewall 40 for the compartment 20.
Side panel 24 includes a pair of panels 42 and 44 which arehi'nge'dly connected by a score line 46, the continuity of the latter being interrupted by suitable cut lines in order to form locking tabs 43 and 50 which are respectively adapted to be received in slots 52 and 54 formed in the base panel 10. Side panel 24 also includes a panel 56 which is connected to panel 44 by a double score line 58.
Panels 42 and 44 are constructed in a novel manner so as to provide a support for one end of the paper rolls which are received within the compartment 20, see FIG. 2, and the construction is such that the paper rolls are efficiently supported for rotation if the rolls are rotated when a desired length of paper is dispensed from the roll and thereafter cut off. As shown, FIG. 1 novel supports include a plurality of similar tabs 60 each being formed in the panel 42 by cut lines 62 and a score line 64. Complementary tabs 66 are formed in the panel 64 by cut lines 68 and score lines 70, the construction also including a slot 72 cut out of the panel 44. When the panel 24 is folded and assembled in order to provide a sidewall 73 for the compartment 20 of FIG. 2, the tabs 69 are first folded inwardly at right angles to the panel 42, following which the tabs 66 are folded downwardly at right angles with respect to the panel 44. Panel 42 is then folded to engage panel 44 and during this operation the tabs 62 will be received within the slots 72 and the spaces formed to panel 44 when tabs 66 are folded downwardly as above described. Slots 74 provided in each of the tabs 60 will then embrace the tabs 66 in order to form a cross-like support construction 76 for the paper rolls as more clearly illu trated in FIG. 2. With the panels 42 and 44 in engagement and the supports 76 formed as just described, it is only necessary to thereafter fold the assembled panels 42 and 44 about the double score line 58 in such manner that the locking tabs 48 and 56 respectively engage the slots 52 and 54 of the base panel 10 in order to form the sidewall 73.
It will be noted from FIG. 1 that base panel 10 is provided with an upper panel 76 which is connected with the panel 78 by a double score line 80 and that a handle section 82 is formed in the panels 76 and 78 as by means of a cut line 84. Handle section 82 is hingedly connected at score line 86 with the panel 76 and a tab 88 is formed in the handle section 82 by means of out line 90 and double score line 92. At the end, the panel 76 is hingedly connected at 94 to an end panel 96 and panel 76 is formed at its opposite side with an end panel 98 which is hingedly connected to the panel 6 by a score line 100.
As will be also seen from FIG. 1, a lower panel 102 is and at one end, the panel 102 is hingedly connectedto an end panel 104 and is also hingedly connected to'an'end panel 106 at its opposite side. It will be understood that when the panels 28 and 30 arefolded to form" the side wall 40, the end panels 96 and 104 are placed between the panels 28 and 30 prior to insertion of the tabs 32 and 34 in the respective slots 36 and 38. It will also be under stood that during assembly of the panels forming the opposite sidewall 33 of the compartment'20, the end panels 98 and 106 are inserted between the assembled panels 42 and 44 and the panel 56 prior to insertion of the tabs 48 r and 50 within the respective slots 52 and 54.
The base panel 12 is formed with .a pair of side panels' 108 and 110, side panel 108 including a pair of foldable panels 112 and 114 which are constructed in afmanner similar to the foldable panels 28 and 30 heretofore described. In other words, panel 114 includes locking tabs 7 116 and 118 which areadapted to be received within repanels 130 and 132 are folded, tabs 136 and 138 are re- I spectively rece'ived within the slots 140 and 142.
The base panel 12 is provided with an upper panel 144 having end tabs 146 and 148, these tabs being provided with respective holes or openings 150 and 152. Base panel 12 is also provided with a lower panel 154 and interconnected panel 156, thelatter being provided with "a handle section 158 which is adapted tomate with the handle section 84 when the containeris erected. When this latter operation is effected, locking tabs 160 and 162 supports for the right side ofthe face panel 10 be formed separately in order to simplify the assembly of the paper rolls on the supports. Referring to FIG. 5, the paper roll supports for the right side of the base panel 10 are formed from a separate insert panel 180 which is formed ,as a pair of panels 182 and 184 interconnected by a double score line 186. Panel 182 is formed with a plurality of tabs 188 which are constructed in the same manner as tabs 60 while panel 184 is formed-with a plurality of tabs 190 which are similar to the tabs 66. In folding and assemblying the insert panel 180 the tabs 190 are folded downwardly while the tabs 188 are folded upwardly out of the plane of the panel 182. Panel 182 is then folded over into the contact with panel 184 whereupon tabs 188 arev received within slots '192 and the, spaces resulting from the movement of tabs 190 downwardly. When the panels" are-thus assembled slots 194' in the tabs 188 embrace the tabs 190 in order to form cross-like supports 196, seeFIGS. 2 and 6;

From the foregoing, it will be readily understood-that the side panels 22 and 24 when assembled in the manner described form the sidewalls 40 and 73 of the compartment 20. Also, when the side panels 108 and 110 are folded in the described manner they form the side walls 124 and 134 of the compartment 21. In further erecting the blank of FIG. 1 to form the container of FIG. 2, it will be understood that the upper panel 78 is folded. over into engagement with panel -76 and that the lower panel 156 is folded over to engage the panel 54 and that the folded panels 76 and 78 form an end wall 176 of the compartment 20 while the folded panels 154 and 156 form' an end wall 178 of the compartment 21. Also, the handle sections 82 and 157 are free of their respective panels and see' FIG. 2. By reason .of thisconstruction, eight or more reels of ribbon may be accommodated in the sec-. tion 21 for attractive display and storage purposes. The insert defined by panels 198 and 200 provides a suitable pocket218 for the reception of miscellaneous wrapping material such as flat folded paper. 7
From the foregoing it will be understood that the present invention provides a novel wrapping and ribbon storage and display kit which is not only eifective to provide a pleasing displayof gift wrapping materials but also provides 'a readily transportable storage container for such materials.
While one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described herein with considerable particularity it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from' the spirit'of the invention. Reference will therefore be'had to the'appended' claim for a definition of the limitations of the invention.
What is claimed is: V a A paperboard container having a pair of sections defining separate compartments, each of which is provided with a pair of opposite side walls and opposite end walls, a pair of-aligned paper roll supports disposed adjacent the respective opposite sidewalls of one compartment, the oppositeside walls, of the other compartment provided with aligned'openingsfor receiving the ends of a rod for supporting a plurality of reels of ribbon, means for hingedly connecting adjacent end walls of saidsecwhich form on said side wall, each of said tabs being formed With complementary slots to form a cross-like support construction, the other of said pair of roll supports disposed adjacent the other of said opposite side Walls and comprising an insert formed of a pair of hingedly connected panels, a first tab hingedly connected to one of said panels along an axis parallel With but spaced from said hinged connections and a second tab hingedly connected to the other of said panels along an axis perpendicular to said hinged connection, said first tab provided in the half-slot disposed perpendicularly to the hinged connection and the second tab provided with a half slot parallel to the hinged connection.
