S. A. PETTIBONE CHIMNEY CARTON Filed July 50. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet. 2
Patented Nov. 3, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STANLEY A. PETTIBONE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MANTLE LAMP COMPANY OF AMERICA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE CHIMNEY CARTON Application filed July 30,
The invention relates to cartons for holding lamp chimneys, an object thereof belng to insure centralizing of chimneys contained therein so that the upper and smaller end of a chimney will be held out of contact with a wall of the enclosing carton, and thus be safe-guarded from destructive external shocks. Another object of said invention is to reduce the amount of material used in making such a carton.
Chimney-holding cartons, as heretofore constructed, have been provided with an 1ntegral flap at the top of the carton Wl11Ch 1S longer than another flap of said carton, sa1d longer flap having a central opening through which the top of a chimney extends. Thls central opening centralizes the top of the chimney in the carton. Experience has shown, however, that this centralizing flap 1s unstable and does not always properly centralize the chimney, and, also, that the cost of making cartons is excessive on account of the extra material required for the production of such a flap.
The new centralizing device, herein described, includes means for centralizing a chimney, which means, if a part of the carton, is of such form that it will not only extend into and not surround the smaller end of an enclosed chimney, but may be made from a blank of minimum dimensions.
The invention will be best understood if reference be had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a carton made in accordance with the new invention, and of an enclosed chimney;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view 49 taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view showing one end of a blank which, when the blank is folded, will produce the centralizing device for the smaller end of a chimney;
Figure 4 is an end View of a carton having 1928. Serial No. 296,119.
the four flaps thereof in position to permit insertion of a chimney;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are views showing the order in which the flaps are folded to bring the centralizing elements into operative positions, and to close the carton.
The blank from which the carton is to be produced (Figure 3), has a main portion 1 and a flap 2, and this blank is to be folded on the indicated dotted lines to produce the rectangular body of the carton, the fla 2 being united to the edge, 3, as indicate in Figure 2. a
The end of the blank which includes the features of the new invention is provided with two chimney-centering flaps 4, 5, and, if desired, with two carton- closing flaps 6, 7, of any known form, one having a slit 8 and the other a tongue 9 adapted to enter and interlock with said slit, the other end of the blank having usual flaps 10, 11, 12, 13 all of which are adapted to overlap and two of which are adapted to overlap and interlock, as shown in Figure 1.
The chimney-centering flaps 4, 5, are of especial construction, the flap 4 being provided with an internal slot 4A which extends across the line, indicated at m, on which said flap is to be bent to form the part 413 of the chimney-centering means; and the flap 5 being provided with an internal tongue 5A having a slit 5B, which tongue is to be bent on the line, indicated at y to admit of engagement of said tongue 5A with said slit 4A when said flaps 4, 5, are made to overlap as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6.
The blank, thus described, is to be folded as indicated by dotted lines to form the body of the carton, whereupon the flaps 10, 11, 12, 13, are bent inward to close the bottom of said carton. The chimney is then inserted, the larger end leading, so that the smaller end is left proximate the open end of the carton, whereupon the flaps 4, 5 are caused to overlap with the parts 4B, 5A, crossed and interlocked ti l within said smaller end as shown in Fi res 1, 2 and 6. The flaps 6, 7 are then folde and interlocked to close the carton.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A chimney carton including two oppositely-disposed flaps having slotted centering elements crossing each other at right angles and matched to form an internal centering means for one end of a chimne In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
STANLEY A. PETTIBONE.
