The operator may now press downwardly upon the manipulating portion 53 to release the clamping pressure upon the jaw 52 and proceeds to pull outwardly on the handle 4'! until the tubular body 46 is free of the inner end of the cage-like body 40. The wound tress of hair is now held by the curler member C and remains thereon until such time as may be necessary to produce the desired curl.

The lots 43 separate the tubular body 46 into four tongs, the outer free ends are pointed to facilitate the insertion of the rods of the cagelike body 43 into the slots to effect an interlocking of the members 0 and D so as to turn together during winding manipulation imparted to the key member D.

Having shown and described what I consider to be the most practical embodiments of my invention, I .wish it to be understood that such changes in construction and design as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. A hair curling device comprising in combination, a tubular hair curler member, a spring clip carried by said curler member and extending substantially the length thereof "and ccacting therewith for gripping a trees of hair after it is wound thereon, a winding key member slidably insertable into and out of said tubular curler member, and releasable mean for connecting the key member to the curler member when the key member is inserted thereinto to facilitate the turning of the curler member upon manual turning of the windin key member to wind a tress of hair on the curler member and to facilitate the withdrawal and separation of the key member from the curler member when the tress of hair is fully wound thereon. t i I I 2. A hair curling device as set forth in claim 1 in which the releasable means includes a spring pressed depressible catch member carried by said winding key member, the catch member having a tooth, said curler member having a keeper opening to lockingly receive the tooth of said catch member.

6. A hair curling device comprising in combination, a tubular curler member open at one end,

a head swivelly mounted in the other end of said curler memberv a clamping element extending the length of said curler member exteriorly thereof and normally engaging the same and having a resilient loop portion at one end fixedly connected to said head, a key member having a body portion fitting within the curler member through the open end thereof, a manipulating portionjconnected to said-body portion and extending beyond the open end of said curler member, releasable interlocking means between the body portion and the curler member for turnably connecting the same together, a clamp member pivoted to said manipulating portion and having an elongated jaw extending substantially parallel to said curler member and between which the free end of a tress of hair to be wound is adapted to be held, and spring means acting to forcibly urge the jaw toward the curlermember.

'7 A hair curling device comprising in COIllbinatlon a cylindrical curler member, a manipulating element, means releasably connecting the manipulating element to the curler member, clamp means carried by the manipulating element for clamping the free end'of a tress of hair to be wound against the curler member, and resilient clamp means swivelly connected to said curler member for gripping the convolutions of a wound tress of hair when wound upon said curler member, whereby the releasable means may be actuated after winding of a tress of hair upon the curler member to facilitate the separation of the manipulating element from the curler member while the wound tress of hair is undisturbed and remains upon the curler member.

8. A hair curling device comprising in combi- I nation, a tubular cage-like curler member havmg spaced radially arranged longitudinal bars,
