PATENT. ()FFICE.
\VILLIAM W. TURNER, OF POWELLVILLE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,633, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed June 29, 1880. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Beit known that I, WILLIAM WEAVER TUR- NER, a citizen of the United States of America, resident near Powellville, in the county of Goweta and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in plows, and it has for its objects to so construct the plow-beam that a plow-standard carrying any description of plowshare may be readily removed and a similar standard carrying another kind of plowshare may be substituted therefor, to adapt the plow to a variety of purposes; also, to lighten the draft of the plow, and, further, to adapt the plow to turn under vegetation, and at the same time to subsoil the ground thoroughly without mixing the subsoil with the top soil, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure .1. represents a side elevation of a plow constructed according to my invention, showing the plow'beam carrying a 1.)low-standard provided with a share suitable, for general purposes. Fig.2 represents a sectional view of the beam, taken longitudinally and vertically. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion of the standard and the plowshare support. Fig. at represents a perspective view of the plowshare detached. Fi 5' represents a side elevation of a modified plow-standard, showing a modificatioi'l of the plowshare. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of themetallic casting, hereinafter described. Fig. 7 represents a view of a portion of the standard as formed for the reception of the metallic casting, and Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of the modified form of plowshare detached.
The letter A indicates the plow-beam, which is of the ordinary construction, and is provided with the usual clevis and handles B. The said beam is slotted vertically at G, and is provided on its upper and lower faces with metallic plates bolted thereon and having the slots D and E. The lower plate around the slot is provided with a boss, F, on its under side, through which passes a bolt, G, to which the upper part of the plow-standard H is pivoted, the upper end of the said standard extending through the slot in the beam, in which it is adapted to move on its pivots in order that it may be adjusted to vary the working angle of the plow share. Such adjustment is effected by means of the wedges K L, one of which is toothed at one edge and adapted to be adjusted upon the edge at the slot of the upper metallic plate, so that the stock may be firmly fastened at any desired angle by means of the plain wedge, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
The lower end of the plow-standard is curved forward, and is provided with an upward projection, M, adapted to set in an aperture, N, in the plowshare when the said share is properly mounted.
The letter F indicates a bent metal support embracing the standard H at R and S, being riveted to said standards at those points.
The plowshare is sharpened at each. end, and turns as on a pivot on the projection M, and is provided with apertures Y for the bolt Z, by means of which it can be clamped with either end forward upon the support I.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5,. 6, 7,
and 8 of the drawings a metallic oastin g, A, is represented attached to the standard at B by means of rivets or bolts. The said casting is provided with a socket, O, for the end of the standard, and with a lug, D, to which the plowshare is bolted'or riveted.
Having thus fully described my invention,-
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a plow, the plow-standard H, bent forward and upward at its foot, and provided with the projection M, in combination with the bent support P, embracing the standard H, as shown, and riveted thereto at-R and S, and the plowshare W, perforated at Nand Y, and the bolt and nut Z, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. TURNER.
Witnesses: I
LUGIUS H. FEATHERSTONE, URIAH B. WILKINSON.
