Description

(NO M66613 PLOW.
Patented Nov. 20, 1883.

INVENTOR.

Unrren STATES PATENT Grinch,
HENRY-O. ROOP, OF CARltOLLTON, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 288,666, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed June 513,183.
(No modtl.)
f0 (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, HENRY O. RooP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plows; and it has for its object to provide a detachable point and detachable and adjustable wings, whereby the plow may be made capable of performing the work of a land-turner or a scraper, or both these functions at the same time; and with these ends iii view my invention consists, essentially, of a plow-point and two independent wings, adapted to be secured together and to the plow-standard by means of a single bolt; and it has for its further object to provide a combined landturner and plow-fender, the same consisting of a device formed into a wing at one end and into a vertical fender at the other, adapted to be secured to the point I and standard by a single bolt, the peculiarities of which will more fully hereinafter appear. H i
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved plow, showing the point and the independent wings attached thereto; Fig. 2, a detached plan view of the plow-point and the wings, showing the construction by which they are adapted to be adjusted; and Fig. 3, a detached perspective View of the combined wing and fender and the plow-point The letter, A indicates a plow-beam provided with the usual handles anda standard, B, constructed, preferably, of a single piece of wrought-iron, having its ends secured to the beam, whereby a slot, 0, is formed. The beam and standard are braced by a bar, 1), secured, respectively, to the beam and to the standard. These parts, however, do not form, any material part of my invention, and may be of any approved construction.
The letter E refers to the plow-point, the
same being constructed, preferably, of cast metal, having its point chilled or made of steel, and provided near its upper end with a rectangular opening, F; and the letter G refers to a metal bar secured to the plow-standard, near its upper end, by means of a bolt and strap, H, the lower end of which has an opening corresponding to that in the plow-point; and the under side of its lower end is provided with a shoulder, P, against which end of the point abuts, whereby the point is prevented from sliding upwardly upon the standard.
The letter I indicates two wings, construct ed each of metal, and preferably of the form indicated in the drawings, the said wings constituting the mold-board of the plow, their forward edges being straight, or approximately so, and their rear edges curved to any proper degree. Eachof these wings, near its lower end, is provided with a rectangular aperture, K cut in each of J, having. V- shaped notches its sides, agreeing in size with that in the plow-point. A bolt, L, having a square shank, is passed through these several apertures and between the side pieces of the standard, and provided with a nut, whereby the several parts are firmly bound together and held to the standard. \Vhen it is desired to adjust either or both of the wings, the nut is unscrewed, the bolt slipped out or partially out of the apertures,
the upper and the wings set in the desired position, the
V-shaped notches in the apertures of which embrace the corners of the bolt-shank. WVhen it is desired to form the land turner on one side and the scraper on the other, only one of the wings is adjusted.
The letter M refers to the combined wing and fender, which, though it may be constructed of separate pieces, as are the two wings just described, may be constructed of a single piece, as in the present instance. *TtlQ'Wing is substantially like those just described, and the fender is formed by bending upor casting the opposite portion of the stop at aright angle to the plane of the plow-point, whereby the fender is made to protect small plants. The intermediate portion, N, is provided with a transverse slot, 0, by means of which the wing and fender are secured to the point and gular opening F, and the square-shanked bolt plow-standard by the bolt L, whereby, also, it L all arranged and operating substantially as may be rigidly adjusted. set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 5 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by my own I have hereto affixed my signature in Letters Patent, is i presence of two witnesses.
The combination of the standard B, having T T slot 0, the plate G, having shoulder I, the HEBRY 0L AN ROOF bolt and strap H, the wings I I, having reet- I Vitnesses:

notches K the plow-point E, having rectan- E. A. RAGAN.
