IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,627, dated December 16, 1873; application filed September 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CORNELIUS M. CLARK, of Seward, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and valuaA ble Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view, part sectional, of my plow. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the same.
rIhis invention relates to certain novel improvements on the prairie-plow which is de- -scribed in the schedule annexed to my Letters Patent numbered 125,936, which I will now proceed .to describe.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the plowbeam, to which handles B B are secured. C represents that portion of the plow to which the share C is secured, which consists of two side standards, s1 sl, connected together at their lower ends by means of a horizontal portion, s2. The lower portions of the standards s s are inclined, as shown in Fig. 4, for the purpose of preventing the sides of the furrow from binding or crowding on the plow. The upper ends of the standards s1 s1 are rigidlyr secured to the sides of the beam A by means of clamps d cl and transverse bolts e e, one of which crosses the beam on top and the other underneath it. C represents the cutter or share, which, like the portion C, has two inclined sides, corresponding to the sides s s, and a horizontal bottom portion, corresponding to the bottom of the portion C. This cutter is secured to the front of C by means of inside and outside straps c, connected at their ends by bolts and nuts, and supported in their places by hooks c', also by means of a rivet, c, which is applied in a hole formed partly in the for turning over the sod, and properly laying.
it in rear of the plow. The front end of the beam A is supported upon the ground by means of a long slide or runner, E, which is connected, by a pivot, b, to the lower bent portions of two standards, D D, for the purpose of allowing it to vibrate and accommodate it- AY.self to undulating surfaces over which it is drawn. The front ends of the standards are confined to the sides of the beam A by means of clamps a, by loosening which the runner E can be adjusted vertically, according to thev depth it is desired to run the plow.
Instead of the straight-edged cutter or share C', a share having a V-shaped or pointed edge may be used, especially if the ground be wet and very adhesive.
It will be seen that the share C can be readily detached from its standard portion when it is necessary to sharpen it, or to substitute a share having a different kind of cutting-edge in its place.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The standard portion C, having attached thereto the share C', with inclined sides, and the mold-board turner Gr, extending slightly over the rear edge of share C, combined substantially as shown, and for the purpose speciied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS M. CLARK.
Witnesses z M. N. CLARK, ALFRED GARNER.
