Description
' s.- o. SULLAM ELECTRIC HAND LAMP AND THE LIKE March 1943.
I Filed 1941 I If Patented Mar. 30, 1943 ELECTRIC HAND LAMP AND THE LIKE Samuel Daniel Sullam, London, England Application August 4, 1941, Serial No. 405,348 In Great Britain July 3, 1941 1 Claim.
This invention relates to electric hand lamps such as miners lamps, inspection lamps, reservoir and bakers lamps and so forth, its object being to provide a simplified construction permitting of almost instantaneous examination of the internal connections thereof.
The invention is of the type described in the co-pending application Serial No. 405,347, dated August 4, 1941, filed herewith, wherein a lamp holder is divided longitudinally into two sections which are held together by a screw threaded ring which engages with a screw thread formed on the outer surface of the holder which allows the two parts to be separated quickly to permit of checking the connections housed within the holder.
According to the present invention this principle is applied to miners lamps, inspection lamps, reservoir and bakers lamps, and like devices, the body of the lamp with the handle being divided lengthwise into two parts, preferably equal parts held together by a screw threaded ring which co-acts with a screw thread on the outer surface of the body, said body extending upwardly to form a handle, the outer extremity of which is also screw threaded either on the outside or the inside, or both, to receive a screw threaded nipple, ring-attachment or a screw-threaded cap for waterproof types on which is screwed a dome with rubber cord grip, or any other appropriate fitting may be fitted to thesaid outer extremity. Near the end of the body remote from this last mentioned end, is a peripheral rim, flange or the like against which can be secured, by means of the first mentioned screw threaded ring, a wire frame as commonly used for inspection lamps, or a fire-proof glass as used for miners lamps or again a shade or reflector.
The inside of the body houses the usual ceramic or like connector for the leads or such connector can be moulded into the material of the body which will then be made from insulating material.
The advantage of the device which can have either bayonet type or screw type holders for the electric bulb, is that by the easy and simple removal of the screw threaded ring, the inner parts or connections for the leads are immediately visible for repair and adjustment.
The invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which The single figure is a vertical section of an inspection lamp constructed in accordance with this invention.
This drawing shows a lamp holder A divided longitudinally in :two parts with interlocking longitudinal edges B, a screw-threaded portion 0 to receive a screw-threaded ring D serving to lock the two parts A together and also to carry a wire frame or guard E which is pressed against the flared end or flange F of the casing A. The upper end of the holder which in the co-pending application formed the neck is extended to form a handle G with grooves H to receive and grip the leads when the parts A are assembled. The free extremity of the handle G can be screwthreaded to receive a locking ring J which carries or forms a suspension ring.
The inside of the casing A may be constructed identically with the invention described in my copending application or may have bridge pieces K laterally disposed which house the usual plunger pins and connections between the leads and the lamp cap.
I claim: 7
An inspection hand lamp for electric lamps comprising a casing moulded in two longitudinal sections, a flange with flared end on each section, a screw thread on each section below the flange and a screw-threaded ring abutting against said flange to engage the screw threads on the casing and secure the two parts thereof firmly together, a terminal on the internal surface of each casing part to receive the electric leads, an upper extension of each casing part to form a handle, a screw-threaded outer end for said handle, a fastening ring engaging said screw-thread and forming suspension means for the lamp, a lateral bridge piece for each part of the casing to house the terminals, grooves through the handle for gripping the leads when the device is assembled and a lamp guard clamped between the screwthreaded ring and the flared ends of the flange on each section.
SAMUEL DANIEL SULLAM.
